Chrono Trigger. Better paced, no random battles, far more interesting characters, ridiculously superior music, and it has two fantastic control schemes via buttons or touch screen depending on how you like to play (or how you're sitting). FFIV isn't BAD, but it's got a lot of problems. The graphics are kind of clunky, the story is boilerplate, the characters are absolutely terrible, and there are so many random battles you'll think it's 1990. They do have a neat set of item unlocks linked to exploring areas, though...but you have to deal with the random battles to get them. Which is interesting - the original game isn't that much older than Chrono Trigger, but time has been far less kind to it.

Because the DS version is a remake, FFIV is better right now. However, Chrono Trigger was superior for its time. So unless you really don't mind the aged graphics of Chrono Trigger, pick up FFIV.
