Well maybe it's different depending on region? Im from Switzerland EU. The ones I got in SSF4 are "Let's take it outside" and "A special gift from Capcom". On SWC I have "New SpotPass content #1" (2 times but with different content) and"New SpotPass content #2"
the spot pass is weird it works best with your system in sleep mode but it can be done without going into sleep mode but at main menu if you look at the game slot there should be a blue dot that means something was downloaded

It might also have something to do with when he got the game. Maybe those SpotPass updates were a one day only thing. I also got quite a few but only on SSF4 and DOA: Dimensions
