New recommendations to come.
we'll see when
The Lack of 2-Pac is annoying but whatever...atleast you finall gave Biggie his props(well almost...loser :P)
anyway i was never into album buying...alwasy liked the songs more than the albums...to be quite honst...also the new kanye album sucks...he isn't rapping..he's singing :| ...and he sucks at it
I like what the Finnish rapper Paleface said about the current state of hip hop: ''there are more talented young rappers in Poland than in United States''. That might not be entirely true but that sure is the impression you get if you only listen to mainstream stuff. The current state of American hip-hop really saddens me.RK-Mara
I agree. Sadly a lot of hip hop is about the same thing over and over again. I miss the rap like Public Enemy. It was socially conscious and had a message.
Very nice reccomendations there Aljosa. Very good places for any hip-hop newbie to start. But, to complement this fine thread, I have a few reccomendations of my own.
Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor
Of the two albums Lupe Fiasco has made, this is his best (that's saying something, since The Cool was excellent). Lupe Fiasco is a great lyricist, with an uncanny ability to mix lighthearted hip-hop lyrics and beats with sociopolitical commentary. It's really astounding.

T.I. - Paper Trail
Say what you will about T.I., the man has some serious skills. He is one of my all time favorite mainstream rappers an his latest, Paper Trail is one of his best albums. I was consistently amazed that, despite an all star list of guest appearances (okay, maybe Rhianna and Lil' Wayne aren't all stars...) he is never outshined on any of his songs. Â
Personal favorites
Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) - Black Star
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite hip-hop albums of all time. Published back in 1998, this album shines as one of the best examples of alternative hip-hop. It demonstrates that there is more to hip-hop than the stereotypes and mainstream would have you believe.

Three is such a small number to have for hip-hops greatest albums. I mean, cause, when you limit it to three you have to leave out stuff like It Was Written, Food and Liquor, Below the Heavens...
Ah well, still a really great list, however small it may be :P
A Hip-Hop thread in GUFU? You know bc will be there:
My recommendations: Lesser known artists
Blu
Blu's debut was regarded as one of the best underground hip-hop albums of 2007. It is probably the most "honest" rap album I've ever heard. On the production side of things, Exile delivers making this album sound like something that should have came out during the 90's hip-hop era
So(ul)Amazing
Blu Colla Worka
Just Another Day (not on album)
Flying Lotus
*don't ask me what that is, I don't know either...
Not a rapper but his music is dope anyways. I found out about him about week ago and I can't stop listening to his beats. If J Dilla and a robot mixed together then you would probably get Flying Lotus. Adult Swim watchers will probably have heard some of his music in the bumps aired on TV.
Melt!
Beginners Falafel
RobertaFlack
G-Side
G S I D E R
Swangin'
Strictly Buzinezz
Southern rap (not the Soulja Boy/85% crappy southern rap) done right. G-Sides debut(?) is heavily reminiscent of artists like UGK, 8ball & MJG, Outkast and other acclaimed southern rappers. The production is probably the smoothest I've heard in a while on a rap album.Â
Doomtree
An 9 man crew (well 8 man/1 woman crew) all on one album? Normally with such a large group there would be dead weight but Doomtree is the exception. Each emcee gets a chance to show their skills and they all deliver. The production is tight on this album as well.
Drumsticks
Game Over
Sadie Hawkins
Elzhi - The Preface
Guilty Simpson - Ode to the Ghetto
These two along with Royce and Black Milk made Detroit the best city in '08 for hiphop. Check out the two best albums of '08. :D
It's been such a long time I listened to it. I'd say at least 6+ years. I quit since then because most of the artists keep on talking about money, cars, jewelry, ***** and things like that.
Now as far as this thread is concerned: it fails because of the lack of 2Pac. He alone is the reason why hip hop was popular. Not only that but some of his tracks like Changes, Life Goes On and Until the End of Time are leagues better than album's people release.
Once again, great thread Aljosa. The_Game21x
Here, here. Great thread.
Shout out to Pac, who didn't make the list, but by far is my favorite rapper ever. "Holla if ya hear me" video has gotta be one of the most powerful, socially salient music videos ever.
And remember "although it seems heaven sent, we ain't ready to see a black president." Wonder what Pac would say today?
Go check out the future of hiphop. KiD CuDi is a new breed of artist because he combines elements from alternative rock, hip-hop and occassionally RNB. Listen to his hit single Day N' Nite which has gained a lot of critical acclaim. Also listen to his free mixtape "A KiD Named CuDi"

GameSpot won't let me link for some reason. :?
I can't believe i am going to say this...*sigh* Good call on Kid Cudi Aljosa....that was a really good pick....well that hurt my pride a little. jg4xchamp:lol:
Now I know that I'm really giving out good recommendations.
Mickey Factz is also another relatively new emcee that is getting A LOT of praise. In 2008 he released one song every week for 36 weeks and compiled them into The Leak Vol.1 The Understanding and The Leak Vol.2 The Inspiration. They are both free compilations.
Mickey is one of my favourite up and coming rappers, tied with Asher Roth and KiD Cudi. He puts so much emotion in his songs and switches his flow up drastically that it fits every song. He is extremely diverse and not one-dimensional like most of the rappers out there. Go listen up and be amazed.
The Leak Vol.1: The Understanding
The Leak Vol.2: The Inspiration
Enjoy! :D
Wow....how did I forget to post Mickey Factz? He's one of my favorite new artists.bc1391Glad to see someone else likes him. Most posters in OTB consider him wack or just alright. :(
TI is my favourite right now, since Snoop Dogg has been doing his own thing now :(Very nice reccomendations there Aljosa. Very good places for any hip-hop newbie to start. But, to complement this fine thread, I have a few reccomendations of my own.

My mind was f*cked when I saw this thread because I don't remember making it.
Then I see the date lol three years ago, damn.
This thread needs a bump. Aljosa I want new albums. I haven't bought anything since Hell Hath No Fury. jg4xchamp
You could start with these:
Currensy - Covert Coup.
Freddie Gibbs - Cold Day in Hell
Big K.R.I.T. - Return of 4eva.
Thurz - LA Riot.
Danny Brown - XXX. Abit of acquired taste, but well worth it.
You can pretty much get alot of legitimately free 'mixtapes' these days.

Recently, I have been listening to Schoolboy QsHabits & Contradictions, I think I like it more than that Kendrick Lamar's album last year, which says quite alot as I loved that Kendrick Lamar album.
Has anyone given props to Edan yet? I haven't read the whole thread (lazy.) Definitely check him out if not. Here is a delightful song about stealing things from children:

^Edan is good, but a much better producer than rapper. /Kanye West.

All great recommendations (okay, so I haven't actually heard CDiH or CC, but both should in theory be good).
Agreed about Schoolboy Q. Production is insane, and it seems more consistent. I think the high points on the Lamar album are probably better, though.
