Would you like to be a videogame designer for your job.. or just do it for fun (obviously not making large games if you are not doing it commercially)?

Personally while it might be fun to write some code and go through the process of making a game, what happens when you have to work on a game that you know is gonna suck? Or, you could possibly just get tired of games being around them all the time and knowing how much work and sometimes annoyance goes into making a game.

What are your thoughts?

I'm a software engineer at EMC (emc.com -- VMware, RSA, Centera, Clariion, Sysmetrix, etc), and before taking this job I put some very serious though into going into the video game field. The biggest drawback for me would have been moving to California, where most of the good game development firms are. I live in massachusettes, and really don't think I want to relocate to the other end of the country. I also felt like I had a lot more studying to do. At this time, I feel like I have the skills to work for a gaming firm, but at the same time I am still interested in getting my Master's Degree in computer science. Unfortunatly, most game developing firms don't pay for you continuing education tuition, whereas a company like EMC is paying me 10k a year towards my MS.

Would I like to in the future? Definitly. In fact, I've already written a short game for the GBA i pure ARM7 assembly code. Wrote a small level designer in C++ using the OpenGL API, and am currently working on putting a small team together for a game related project. I think if I were to get a good programming position at a good firm, i would make the move, but not yet.

I don't think I have what it takes. I'm not very good with computers at all.

But I do plan to persue a career in game reviewing and whatnot.

I've put some very serious thought into a job as a game designer, programmer or something in sound design. I've been doing a little study in programming, but i still know almost nothing. I could end up in a game design program at college in a couple of years.

I'm studying programming. I wouldnt mind if it were as a game programmer, or just making typical business applications for a corporation. I wouldnt specifically limit myself to just games.

Also, i have a pretty big feeling most people planning to be a game designer, are probably confusing the task that a producer has. A game designer, rarely, actually designs anything of the game beyond the formulas and some concepts. Its really the producer that brings the stuff together.

For example, Miyamoto is listed as "Producer" under all his games, and not "Game Designer." A game designer really doesnt have a whole lot of say in the games development business. I have no idea why they get so much credit.

I'm going to be getting my BS in Computer Engineering in another semester, and I've decided that I'm probably just going to get into programming/software engineering rather than pursue something designing hardware. I always toss around the idea of trying to get a job at game developer, but sometimes it seems like such a tough industry to crack. Until then, I'm going to keep working on my own games since I enjoy it so much. :D

I too am studying computer science currently. My goals are to be a programmer at first, but eventually design a game. I have drawn up many ideas, and created some of them in flash already (Just for fun to see if it actually works at all) and since I live in the city of Vancouver, there are many oppurtunities to get a job in the field.

Well i have 2 passions, and a half.
The first is easily explained. It's gaming.
The second would be showing people there is more possible than they believe/figuring out reality.
(The half would be martial arts/seeing what people believe or live for.)

Apart from this, i don't care much about life.
In fact You could say these two passions are forms of escapism.

Problem is, i can't find any interesting job or study. Not interesting enough to make it seem worth the effort.
Gaming designer/programmer? Heh, i would surely murder for a job that has something to do with showing people their limited perception sucks through games/creating the nicest experience i can or the biggest escape from or through reality.
But honestly that is kind of delusional since i don't have any knowledge on any terrain. The higher computer studies here minimally require a lot of math skills that would surely take me years to adopt.
Even then, it's extremely hard to get a job in gaming, or so i've heard, and it has become very impersonal and specialised.
Instead of being the person who made someone smile, i would end up as the person who specialises in the motion of leafs in the wind. Yay.

I wouldn't like to work with code - my experience with level designers on AOE games put me off that. But something like writing is more up my street.

No. I submited my poor game design to a contest here on gamespot and a guy crushed my dreams of becoming one.

I would love to design games for a living and I have a few ideas (which sound good to me of course) floating around in my head or written down. But I tried to learn programming and do not have enough interest in it to go all the way. I would rather be like a producer, get the money together come with ideas, you know the boss :P

I read about the designers at Rare and they come up with game play ideas, story line, and coordiante all the departments. They don't know jack about programming or art programs. They're like hands on managers.

Maybe if I become a successful CFO (currently an Accounting major) I can use my trillions of dollars to start a game company.

EDIT: Anyone else's posts taking several minutes to appear?

no, but this site is really buggered up. Sometimes I will write something up and hit post and in 15 minutes it has timed out and it doesn't even keep it and ask me to sign in, it deletes what I had typed and goes to the page telling me to subscribe. Also I am getting odd HTML entity errors whilst pasting, and it is infuriating. Not to mention that a lot of the buttons on the site are off and you have to search for a few seconds to find where to click to use it.

Yes - mapping. I've had some experience with Build and UnrealED and gained experience over time. Still have a lot more to learn, though, as I kinda suck at large outdoor areas.

When I was younger (like kinda a lot younger :)) I thought it would be awesome. And I still think it would be awesome, if you were the complete boss of the project and your ideas and designs were majically put into the game without worrying about coding etc. Otherwise... hmm, maybe not. Although I'm sure there are jobs that don't require too much coding... right? Like level designers and stuff. That could be fun.

edit: ghaa, guess I didn't read the title of the thread closely enough. But yeah, anything having to do with thinking up gameplay ideas, etc, would be very hard but I'd be up to the challenge. Almost every new cool sounding idea would introduce some kind of new problem to solve.
