I think the first RPG I ever played was Earthbound for the SNES. I loved every moment of it. Quirky, off beat, colorful worlds with an over the top storyline set in the modern day world. What's not to love? The Player's Guide it came with was pretty sweet, as well (except for those nasty scratch and sniff cards).
From there I went to Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy IV...and by then I was hooked and have played/own most of the notable RPGs from the NES on.
Basically Shining the Holy Ark (on the Sega Saturn).
The basic interest in RPG-like games came from Mystic Quest/FF Adventure and Secret of Mana, but first the strategic Mystaria catched my interest then Shining the Holy Ark got me interested in the Turn-Based-RPG Section and became the first real RPG in my libary.
After that it was FF7 who got my trust in my now-favourite genre.
P.S. Even if StHA was great,I´m European,we didn´t get any RPGs here before! No FF6,No Chrono Trigger,nothing...we only got FF1,Lufia 2 and Suikoden and Phantasy Star 1-4...I think thats a excuse
It was either Dragon Warrior (which I won in an old Pepsi contest) or Final Fantasy 1 on the NES - at this point I can't remember which came out first.
Though I DID play a few Choose Your Own Adventures on an old PC WAY back in the day... if that counts... then thats the one.
