I'm pretty sure kids are more likely to be afraid of games in general...whether they're rated M or even E. It's something that has to do with the visuals just as much as the violence.

My very first game was a Namco Classics pack for the GBA. Believe me here and now when I say I could never finish Dig Dug. Those dinosaur things I could kill with no problem. But when they turned into those creepy-as-hell floating grins to get you? Ohhhh, my God. That was it for me. I was six years old.

So, what video game enemy unnerved or traumatized you when you were younger? Lol

@sanghelle56:

The ghost people in Silent Hill 4 The Room. The worst part is that they were unkillable.

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, think I was about 12/13 when playing this, I couldn't handle hearing him say "Stars" knowing he would chase you relentlessly.

@sanghelle56: For me, and I'll be 100% honest... I was about 6 or 7 at the time. It was Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets on PS2, surprisingly there was a bit in it where you had to go through a forest and you'd get these tree branch things that would shoot out of the ground and that scared the crap outta me cause it would happen unexpectedly and rapidly... can't remember what level it was though. Pretty scary at the time, now it must be quite funny thinking back at it.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Of course you'd have to have played it to know what I mean.

@sanghelle56: Now, these days Call of duty: World at War for Xbox 360 zombie mode always makes me jump, you know when you rebuild a barrier and you turn the camera around, a zombie was right in front of me. Oh god, still gets me on edge when trying to complete as many levels as I could. I recall getting to level 5, I got to 6 once on single player.

Does that freak you out, if you've played it before?

@strongparkour: I know what you mean when it comes to evil plant life. I've had that experience in LEGO Knights Kingdom; almost every level involving the green knight had you go through forests infested with these tentacle-like tree vines that would randomly pop out of the ground and attack you. Stopped playing it after that.

I've played Zombie Mode in Black Ops, but never found them scary. I don't know, they rattle their heads in a disturbing way, they're faster than you in hordes, and it takes too much ammo to kill them once Level 7 or so kicks in. Yet the awesome dialogue from the player characters ( especially Tank Dempsey ) is a hilarious morale booster if you're the least bit afraid of them.

"Bone sucking maggot whores. They're REALLY gonna pay now!" Lol

the physiological damage is real :(

Haha, it really put the shits up me, and still affects me somewhat now when I replay it.

Nothing. I do get startled by jump scares. But, then, all they do is get me pissed off and itching for some payback.

I'm old enough that the graphics in games when I was young weren't really good enough to have scary enemies. I do remember being very freaked out the first time a trap chopped me in half in Prince of Persia, though. I had a cold sweat and everything.

A lot of games, but I played a lot of Survival Horror games during its peak in the 128-bit console generation.

Not even a horror game, the Wallmasters from Zelda: Ocarina of Time...could never finish the game as a result. I could do both the Water and Fire temples just fine, but dealing with those hands...NOOP!

The fast zombies were way more terrifying to me in Half life 2. Maybe because they were actually more dangerous, plus they scuttle real fast like a spider. And system shock 2 had really creepy sound!

Jason from the NES version of Friday the 13th. As you would explore cabins he would be in random ones and start hacking at you with his machete.

First silent Hill had those baby things with knives

There was an old arcade space shooter, I think its name was sinistar, and it had vectrex graphics similar to the old star wars games.

You sat in a booth and played it and at some point this giant demon head came out to attack you and it had a really demonic scream/voice that blasted through the speakers all around you. Scared the piss out of me as a kid.

I never really got scared and still don't but there were some enemies that as a kid I was creeped out by:

That big lizard/monster thing from the Spawn game on the PS1

The first shambling, wreckage of a creature known as a zombie that I saw in my first playthrough of Resi 2

Psychomantis in MGS...and I mean a genuine freak out moment lol

The first grunt in unreal after you exit the crashed ship and about to enter the first cave. Must've been 8 or 9.

That would have to be "Dead Hand" from the Ocarina of Time. I hated it as a kid. I think half of it was the old freaky looking 3D animation.

.....Sheesh. I was a scaredy cat when I was young so there were many things that frighten me. Off the top of my head:

Mario 64: There was an eel I think in one of the painting worlds. All I needed was to see a glimpse of it to simply avoid trying to get the star he was guarding. Hell, he made me avoid going underwater altogether...

Ocarina of Time: I just avoided the Well/Shadow Temple portion of the game altogether. It took months for me to grow balls to venture in either dungeon simply because of all the invisible monsters hanging around, not to mention the Wallmasters and Dead hand....

Resident Evil 2/3/REmake: Where to begin. Pretty much any encounters with Lickers and Hunters. Nemesis when encountering him after he starts transforming. God damn thing in chains from REmake. Crimson Head Zombies also caught me off guard.

Metroid Prime: This was my first Metroid game so the Metroids in this game scared the hell out of me. Particularly, the ones that get huge from feeding on the Pirates that be in the same area as them....

Probably The Butcher in Diablo 1 and the zombies in Thief 1. I never really played scary games, and stuff before then was rarely good looking enough to be scary

The game over screen from Operation Wolf on the Master System used to scare me shitless when I was 6.

Just a sad looking guy sitting on a prison bed, but I had to look away every time.

I cannot recall ever being scared by a video game, but one game that has stuck with me because it truly freaked me out as a kid was 9: The Last Resort. A very creepy and atmospheric game with disturbing characters and environments. I love that game.

Also The Butcher in Diablo. Now that guy did make me uneasy.

The first thing that came to my mind were the Raptors in Dino Crisis ... which is weird, because I wasn't afraid of the dogs in RE.
