My game of the generation is Dark Souls. There were many excellent, exciting games released this generation but that game takes the cake for me, hands down.

-Batman Arkham City

-Donkey Kong Country Returns

-Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition 2012

These three were in their own league last generation. A Jack of all trades that does everything to a superb level of quality, one of the greatest platformers ever created in the history of gaming, and the competitive game that swallowed most of my time respectfully.

Honourable mentions

-The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword

-Super Mario Galaxy 2

-Metroid Prime 3 Corruption

-Devil May Cry 4

-Darksiders

if its the 2005-2013 era...

i would have to say Civilzation 5 & Tomb Raider 2013 were the single player games i've probably played the most. The most played multiplayer game would probably be TERA.

for consoles nothing stands out much. But I did like Beautiful Katamari, Mass Effect 1 and 2.

Thats almost a decade of gaming and there have been some absolute great titles , GTA , Hitman, LA Noire to name a few recent ones, Halo , Dead Rising, MSG , Final Fantasy and a lot more. i would have to go back through my game liberay to get them all.

It's difficult for me to narrow down a whole gen to just one game. I listed memorable games that stood out to me the most.

Bioshock 1 was my first official FPS game. I used to shit on all FPS games until I played Bioshock. I brought and sunk hours into it after downloading the demo on one of those 'let me see what the fuss is over Bioshock'. To my luck, the Rapture version was just being released so I was able to get both 1 and 2.

MGS4 and Uncharted 2 are the main reasons I got a PS3.

Mass Effect 2. I remember thinking the demo was crap and was going to pass on buying the game altogether. People kept telling me the demo was a poor representation of the game. I finally decided to give it a shot one day and the rest is history.

Arriving so late to the party, jumping in 2 - 3 years ago is one of the main reasons I enjoyed 7th gen so much and still am. Most of the games listed were only $20 - $30 brand new with all DLC included.

My Game of the generation is MGS4.

The other best of the gen for me was LBP, Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2, Fallout 3, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Dark Souls, Fallout NV, Skyrim, Batman Arkham City, Zelda SS, Bioshock

I have to agree with Dvader this gen as well (MGS 4 is my GOTG),(RE4 was my game of last gen) :P

There's still lots of games I haven't had the chance to play as I would have liked but these few games stand out from some of the games I've played. Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Gears of War, Bioshock, CoD 4, Halo 3, Forza 3, Batman series.

For me it is either Super Mario Galaxy or Uncharted 2. Mario Galaxy was just astounding in terms of game design. It reminded me of old school 16 bit games brought to the modern times. However, Uncharted 2 was the first game of the past gen that truly felt like a next gen game to me, and blew me away in the process.

I'd give Halo 4 a runner up spot.

There have been a lot of wonderful games this generation, but my hands down favorite is LBP2. I had burned out on buttbouncers in the 16 bit era, when they were as common as shooters are now, but when I saw the first video of the original LBP at the GDC, my interest in the genre was rekindled. It was a four player simultaneous platformer governed by cartoon physics which gave players the ability to interact with much of the world and each other in novel ways.

Of course, it was a wonderful game on its own, but the LBP series owes its incredibly long legs to the community. People working along or in concert (once saw a credit roll of 30 people) poured dozens if not hundreds of hours into crafting levels. The 3D engine of LBP has always been limited (though a handful of elite designers have figured out how to build games in 3D) but LBP's 2D engine was amazing flexible out of the gate and got a lot more powerful as time went on. Creators can design levels and enemies, tweak physics (which can be set globally and also on a per-object basis), program AI, paint textures, compose music and perform voice work. There are not only platformers, but 2D shooters, puzzle games, rpgs, educational games, click and point adventure games, brawlers, minigames, survival horror games and movies.

I'm not a creator myself (though I tinker for fun) but I admire the quality and creativeness of some members of the community and up until a few months ago my daughters and I would sit down almost every day and play LBP2 together (tomorrow we are all going to play the new DC Comics Level that hit today). I spent two days putting together a real world dollhouse but my daughters were a lot more interested in building their own dollhouses in LBP2.

Last and probably least, LBP boasts a ton of costumes, textures and objects. Where else do Batman, Ada Lovelace (real life female mathematician/programmer who worked with Babbage), the Disney Princesses, Wolverine, Bioshock's Little Sister, Oddworld's The Stranger, Kratos, Judge Dredd, The Muppets, Cloud Strife and Solid Snake rub elbows?
