I miss cheat codes, I remember during the 90s if you got a game it was always fun to check and see what kind of interesting codes you could receive. I really wish they would bring cheat codes back into regular use. For example I remember in Goldeneye there was a code to make all of your bullets land as paintball splats.

I've been wondering the exact same thing, but I assumed that cheat codes stopped simply because games are getting easier to complete, but more serious. It would be weird to see Gear Of War 2 have a cheat that let you shoot coconuts at people.

Yea, not that I care but I think the reason why cheat codes like God Mode aren't around is because it's usually pretty easy to start with. Like Call of Duty, you already have regenerative health so why would you need a God Mode cheat code?

cheats use to be more fun, if anyone played the Spiderman games on PS1, there was a cheat that let you access the "what if mode", which made the game crazy (mysterio with a fish bowl head , dancing spiderman and black cat).

can you imagine some of today's games with big head mode?? :S

Gaming turned from experimental 'would they like this?' games to 'we know what You want!" bang bang big explosion standard formula for saving costs games.

Which has its benefits. Just a shame some companies lost an understanding of what they are doing. Not just making profits, they are there to create dreams come true. Once we show them the light, You will see more fun seeping into games. We are currently at war with activision. When we win that we'll get one step closer again, to one day creating a digital Paradise.

I miss them too. It's unfortunate, but they got replaced by unlockables and DLC.

The games are too easy. And if it is too hard nobody will play it.

Well, that is true, to an extent. DBZ Infinite World is a ridiculously hard game, so not many people play it. But then again, Ninja Gaiden has taken the title of 'Hardest franchise in existence', but many people still decide to buy it and try to beat it, even though there's a source saying that there's an 80% chance that you won't.

i think i have to agree. you rarely come across games anymore where, while playing, you just know the developers had so much fun creating it. which i think is what these cheat codes really are, developers having a laugh. i guess they just aren't allowed the time. this also reflects on easter eggs which nowadays are mostly dime a dozen, uninspired affairs, if a game even has them, whereas in the past you would frequently have truly funny and clever easter eggs that made for a great reward for the effort it often required to find it.

i'd be curious to know what you think the benefits you mention are though? and unlike you, i'm a little less optimistic if this will ever come back..

achievements are what happened.when u use cheat codes, u well...umm cheat.so achievement whores would just use cheats all the time to get their achievements instead of using them for fun.simple as that.then sony followed ms.and eventually nintendo will too.

Maybe i used weird words. Using formulas and creating the illusion that they know what they are doing, is a side effect we see in every industry and science. Things start off simple, mankind learns mainly by trial and error. When things become complex we get teachers, books, specialists. A lot of people who claim to be superior or to actually know more about something than the uneducated. They get some kind of status and they want to reap endless rewards, higher salaries etc, for having put in some effort in knowing all that boring stuff. Elitism.

That's when game development has to become automated to a degree since no one person knows everything. So You get rules, deadlines, etc. You get people who pretend to make their deadlines or use other illusions to maintain their elitist title. Costs rise very much in comparison to the quality. They create an illusion of knowing what they are doing, and eventually even practically automate the process of gaining an understanding of what people want. This process is then based on the one thing that counts to the people with all the elitist responsibility. That is money to keep everything 'alive'.

But this whole increase in complexity (knowledge of previous trials and errors) means the games become more and more capable of achieving their goals. And the goal of creating a videogame, whether You take into account the illusionary value of money or not, is to create an experience that at least one person absolutely wants. It's kind of a search for the ultimate experience, a digital Paradise. I don't think there is any stopping that search, there isn't any choice involved. We all do what we think is best, which is not more than logical, or it's out of our control. The only thing that could stop it logically speaking, is not thinking at all. The illusions are just slowing things down. By definition truth always wakes people up, so there's no need to be pessimistic in the long run.

Somewhere along the way, developer's policies changed from "Hey, you gave us money, play it however you want to play it," to "You have to play it the way we want you to play it." And I think it had something to do with achievements.
