What makes it irresistible? addictive? fun?
Or even a MASTERPIECE?

Solid controls, gameplay, and technical performance (frame-rate) are essential for any game.
Anything else is going to vary depending on genre.
Story, characters, variety, value for money, online features, and so on.
Oh, and not having Call of Duty in the title. Couldn't resist.
Characters are really the most important thing to me. If I like them, feel like they're real people, with real personalities - because the writing and voice acting is top-notch, then I care about whatever it is they're trying to accomplish. That's the difference between feeling like I'm playing a game vs. taking part in an adventure.
1) gameplay has to be smooth, fluid, responsive and easy to learn. 2) characters must be interesting, have their own personalities, must look cool (a lot of RPG's have characters looking like extreme heterosexuals....not cool), 3) story has to be good. It has to keep the player's attention through the whole game or else it becomes one of those games you force yourself to play so the game doesnt feel like a total waste of money 4) must have cool weapons, armors, items ect. 5) and it cannot be a clone of other games. Why buy a game that is just like 56 other games? What makes it irresistible? addictive? fun?
Or even a MASTERPIECE?

Just my personal opinion though.
Excellent gameplay mechanics, responsive controls, and brilliant level design. Everything else is just a bonus
NOT being a generic first person shooter with gruff soldiers in it.Nismology

This!!!
To me, a quality game is well written, has engaging gameplay, and is polished well. Essentially, you should be able to feel that the developers really cared about their game and worked hard to make it the best it could be.silentexistenceThis as well. I could name two developers that comes to mind right away. Blizzard and Valve. Those are the only two developers that I can trust to deliver polished games. And they reek of quality like not other developers. I'm not saying I don't like other devs like CDPR, BioWare, Remedy, Rockstar, or the next guy.. but those two devs are kings of quality. Dare I say it.
i would say a deep immersive storyline, great characters, and music that fits the "feel" of the game...
anything else is just personal preference

What? No they aren't. You left out some of the most important things like gameplay mechanics and controls. These things are much more important than story-line and characters.
Presentation and solid game mechanics.
is what makes a game a quality game.
even if it is just another shooter with gruff soldiers. if it's executed well, the only people who are gonna decry it are the bias'd folks.
Take note - before someone jumps down my throat - that does not mean that your games are not quality games.
When you say "Quality" I think of how well was your execution in making the product. That's it.
So for instance, Battlefield 3, Batman Arkham, Skyward Sword, Catherine, and quite a few others can be termed as quality games.
That's a really tough question that I think really comes down to individual games. The greatest games I can think of off the top of my head are games that have fairly unique ideas or at least seem to be above similar games (things like Freelancer, Company of Heroes, Homeworld 2, STALKER, GTAIV, Team Fortress 2 before Mann Co). But good ideas don't always equal quality, sometimes it takes purposeful design (Red Orchestra 2 has really good weapons features), other games like (and I hate to say it) Modern Warfare are really polished when it comes to controls and movement. Ideally a "quality" game would have all of these things plus a great story, gameplay, voice acting and other bells and whistles but sometimes you can only look at a game and see what it does best or differently to discover its quality.
Depends. For a flight sim, accurate depiction of the aircraft. The ability to customize every aspect of a flight from aircraft type to clouds and weather conditions. The ability to import real world weather and use them in the game. Or, allow me to customize my own weather since I probably have a better feel for weather than the game programmers. Have an accurate rendering of the ground environment and landmarks relative to the technology being used by the game.
Flight Simulator X does these things. That's why it's my favorite game for now.
I think the graphics have to be technically stunning at the time of its release. I think the controls have to be responsive & easy to use. There cannot be even one moment of me thinking "where the heck do I go next". The main single player mode has to be exciting & fun to play. There has to be something included in the package that gives the game tons of replay value (a survival mode, for example). The game should have an incredibly accessible difficulty level so that literally anyone can pick it up and play.
To me, games are all the same, regardless of how much enjoyment I can get out of them. They're all meaningless, just as everything in reality itself is of no meaning at all.
Besides, why take so much time and effort to grade each game with a score of its own or contemplating too much about it when life is too short? One can easily say the same thing about discussing whether the PC or any console is the best gaming platform.
agreed.
i'd say, if you feel like you can plow through the whole game, whether it's based on a presentation standpoint or just because the game is fun enough, it's a quality game. flaws inherent will degrade the game, but only if they obvious or glaring... like game breaking bugs like your dumb ferry man in Far Cry 2 getting stuck in all your new games and not being able to be "saved"! ARGH, then it's just annoying.
For me it would have to be characters, story and scenery not just graphics but the environments as well...... And of course framerate, controls and all that technical stuff.
