All the back and forth about Zelda got me thinking about the subject. What games would you give a 10 if you were to review them?

Here's my list:

  • F-Zero X - Hopefully this makes sense, I like GX more, but it has more flaws. X on the other hand perfectly executes everything it sets out to do. Great sense of speed, tight controls, fantastic track design, and I really like the look of the old school graphics running at 60fps.
  • Super Monkey Ball - Love the concept, love the wide variety of multi-player games, love the colorful world, and flawless controls.
  • The Last Blade - This is the moment I believe 2D fighting games stopped improving. Don't get me wrong, I love the genre, but the formula was perfected in 1998. Since then, games have gotten prettier and more complicated, but not better.
  • Tetris - There is a reason this game comes out on everything.
  • Viewtiful Joe - Like a comic book come to life. I don't think there has been a better beat-em-up before or sinse.
  • Motorstorm: Pacific Rift - I love the weight of the vehicles, the roar of the engines, and the perilous nature of the race tracks. Best off-road racing game I've ever played.
  • Super Metroid - Just a perfect combination of shooting, platforming, and exploration. Stellar, atmospheric sound design and art direction. Minimalist visual storytelling, which I believe is how it should be done in a video game.

Looking forward to your responses everyone!

Hmmm, interesting question... Never really thought about how I would score my favourite games.

If I think of my top 10 fav games, I'd probably give a 10/10 to games like Half-Life 2, Bioshock & Witcher 3. As I move further down the list, the Mass Effect Trilogy and Halo: MCC pop up... but I don't think I'd give any individual game from those series a 10/10 (definitely a 9 or 9.5/10 though). Portal 2 would come close, probably a 9.5.

So yeah, probably Half-Life 2, Bioshock & Witcher 3 are the main ones.

@hrt_rulz01:

I don't differ from you much, I'd give both Half-Life 2 and Bioshock a 9 or 9.5 each. I haven't played Witcher 3.

For me, only truly, truly special games deserve 10/10. It has to be unique, and everything it tries has to be executed to perfection or near perfection. By that criteria, I have played only four games ever that I think deserve 10/10:

System Shock 2: the atmosphere, the writing, the characters, the RPG system. This was a sci-fi horror masterpiece which continues to influence the genre to this day.

Unreal Tournament 2004: the Unreal Tournament formula taken to the next level, but it was the vast volume of content that sealed it for me. Continues to hold up very well to this day.

Portal: perfect blend of simple yet ingenious puzzles and dark humour made this a truly special game.

Portal 2: much like its predecessor. except longer.

I began rating games on this site when it had the 20 point scale so that is what I use. I still use it and keep my ratings elsewhere for everything I play. Anyway, of my 300+ ratings including DLC and small games the only 10's I have are Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and The Last of Us. I haven't really been blown away by much this generation such far, but there's still a good amount of games I haven't played that I have high hopes for.

The original Deus Ex is probably my only 10/10...my only perfect gaming experience. It's the only game from years ago that I still play to this day, multiple times a year.

Runners up would probably be:

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 (yes, both of them)
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Mechwarrior 2
Half-Life, the entire series.
Homeworld

  • Super Mario World
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Dungeon Keeper 2

  • Dota 2 - I was legitimately addicted to it for a few years. I had played hundreds of games at this point but it was like nothing I ever played before.
  • Super Mario World - first game I ever played, hundreds of hours in the same levels over and over again.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - was a hot topic amongst my friends and family. My first playthrough was at snail pace, I was young I basically would get stuck alot - and instead of looking things up I would just go searching around Hyrule for other things to do. I almost finished the game with 100% completion.
  • Metal Gear Solid 3 - Absolutely loved it. I've replayed it 3-4 times, it was an incredible looking game for the ps2's time.

I meant to put UT 2004 in my original post, but looks like I forgot. Great game. Thanks for bringing it up.

Own System Shock 2, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ashamed to admit I have not played the Portals, but they are on my wish list.

@Archangel3371: Even Mass Effect 3? I'm not judging, haven't played the game, but sooooo many people hate the ending. Was it that the ending wasn't bad enough tarnish the experience, or do you think people's reaction was overblown?

Of the games on your list I have played, those are good choices.

@RSM-HQ: Nice list. You have very eclectic taste in games.

Dark Souls, and that's pretty much it.

Every other one (Ocarina of Time and FFX mostly) that I would consider 10/10 are probably for nostalgia. They are my personal 10/10s, but if I'm trying to be as objective as possible I think Dark Souls is the only 10/10 I have played. Ocarina of Time would be up there if not for the water temple which was way worse than blighttown.

no games 10/10. Even ones i consider classics theres something wrong with some part of them, graphically or just something that always bugs me. I haven't a clue how you could call anything perfect
