Over here in the U.K, videogames are once again getting scrutinized for containing violent content and that it, in turn, makes people violent. I'm currently in my 2nd year of a couselling degree and am carrying out research as to whether people think this is correct or not. There is no right or wrong answer but please try and justify your explanation should you wish too put forward your opinion.

Thank you all.

-games reach 100s of millions of people. and yet there is only a few who go out murdering...........shouldnt everyone who plays gta kill hookers? - its ignorant to believe that games are the cause of any mass shootings, ignoring the various frustrations and struggles of modern life - with the vhs, the same nonsense happened. same with music and many many many years ago , even books faced these same ignorant morons. clearly people dont learn from the past, nor any facts of today, such as crime rates going down since video games have come out.

Violence is a part of life. The rush of adrenaline is the thing that keeps us alive and that rush feels good. I know peoples heart rate rise when they play games.

We cannot hide our kids from it.I have a 3year old son.I did not show him how to hit someone. But he does it!! he never saw on video-games,or TV!Its survival.

People say its television.Videogames are fantasy, an escape. The same as watching a movie.Wanting to be the hero, solving a problem.Achieving a goal without ur boss nagging your head. Sometimes the character inside the game is not good or bad. When its a bad character,say...Kratos,its interesting to experience nonetheless.Films have covered this area already.

What about cowboys and indians? It's all roleplay.Knowing the difference between make-believe and the real world. Can a person tell the difference between hitting a person with a big sword in Soulblade and getting a real one at martial arts?Of course.Because the girl is not got a big DD breast with ridiculous outfit.

The news on the television every night? That is something I avoid because its depressing after a hard days work.More fun to talk about games and football:)

Good luck with the study. I suggest you investigate the current issue MANHUNT 2,in which the content of the game has caused alot of concern.Maybe because the character you play kills in realistic ways. A murder simulator.Thats where people get worried because they think nutcases will like it and do it for real.It can teach a person how to hold a knife or slash a throat, or where to cut a man.

It matters... It's just like watching porno, the stuff you see gets stuck in your head, the filth, the sex, or even violence, it all gets stuck in your head..the tendency is you want to do it somehow.but that's a different story. If you are addicted to it, then you would really try to do it. As porn addiction leads to rape, EXTREMELY violent games with a cult following it leads to murderous rascals. :D

GTA that game, I dunno, but one time on the street, I thought of taking a car from a person....

It is Instinct that Human Kind Breeds out, Video games can Cause Violence, in some people, But the vast Majority of players are not affected to the point where they become violent out right, but it does increase the violent drive of people, there are studies of this, but the fact is that when I feel like being Violent, I take it out in a Video game, Besides, when have you ever heard of someone trying to jump on someone to kill them? I know I dind't try that after I played Mario...lol

Vilonce in games, it'll always be there. Even in rated E games, theres just not alot of blood in the T or M rated games. So if they should stop making games with vilonce in them then they'll have to shut down the gaming world, which will never happen.

I play Video games to experiance things I wouldn't experiance in day to day life.

I believe it's very human to have a natural interest in Violent video games because video games are all about experiancing things we will never get to do (that's why I've always stayed away from most sports games and stuff like Train Simulator, I find that stuff boring and mundane).

Take manhunt, a game recently scrutinized for being too over-violent. I really enjoy the manhunt series, because it's a massive test in a safe enviroment of just how violent I can be. This doesn't mean I'm going to go out into the street and suffocate people with plastic bags, but this DOES mean I can enjoy seeing how I react to the various situations and events in which manhunt presents to the player (which usually involve brutal violence).

If people are not confident enough in themselves to play and experiance these types of games, I don't blame them, it's up to the player. But I feel that I am, so thats why I really enjoy violent games, and find censorship so insulting.

Exactly! Thats it, We are violent, its Nature, as animals we are prone to aggression and dominating personalities, if video games were not around, we would have no where to channel that Animal side but on each other, and since that is deemed un-exeptable, we would just be bottleing up that aggression, which is not good...

As I see it, most people who are against violent video games see things backwards. People don't become violent because of video games, violent people surround themselves with violent media in an attempt to justify themselves. If a person has a predilection to violence (torturing pets and such) in an attempt to make themselves feel "normal" they willsurround themselves with more items and people with violent underpinnings. That's how I see it anyway ....

why would a game make me wanna kill people. the idea of that is stupi.d perhaps all the bullying in schools and random muggings are what pisses people off so much that they decide to be as bad as the people who treat them

I have to disagree with the ideas here. Addiction to something such as sexual images and video does not lead to rape. There are several people I know who watch such things (some of them quite a bit), but they express disgust at the thought of an action such as rape.

Don't get me wrong, it is possible for this to happen, especially when one watches adult films which depict said actions, but that is hardly the general result. This is part of the problem that is encountered within the video game spectrum. There are those who want to sensationalize the minority and thereby give a bad name to the whole.

Some people may be more apt to be violent after playing a game, but it is hard to exacerbate emotions and feelings that are not previously there. If a violent game makes someone want to be violent towards another, then chances are that the desire was already there.

Well, seeing a lot of violence might make you more violent or aggressive, but people have more common sense than we give them credit for. As long as you can tell the difference between right and wrong, real and fake, there's nothing wrong with playing violent games.

Only if you believe that sex / porn is filthy. Or violence abnormla. Violence is everywhere. Nature is violent. Humans are violent. our animal friends are violent. And every species on the planet has sex, more often than not in pornographic way. Someone who rapes has deep seeded problems that porn did not create. Extremely violent people are going to be violent regradless of video games. People act like violence is a new thing. Geez. Ridiculous.

Wow....Just wow. Humans are biologically prone to wanting sex, hence why there's porn addiction, and why pr0n furtheres than crave for sex. However, violence in games doesn't make people violent unless they were in the first place. Porno doesn't bring attraction, it attracts those that were attracted to sex in the first place. If you don't like violence, a game won't change that. If you're a sociopath, yes, you'll be inspired, if you're Gandhi, you'll still be Gandhi.
