Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage 2, Wangan Midnight, pretty much anything by Yuzo Koshiro really. MGS, DMC and Castlevania have great music too.HandsomeDead
Yes! Streets of Rage got me into electronica music. Final Fantasy and Streets of Rage have been my all time faves, but surprisingly the new Mega Man ZX games have some really good music. Â
i always loved the midi style music that was in older games. you can appreciate it a lot more knowing that who ever made the music did a really good job with the limited tools he/she had. things are much easier these days so its hard to appreciate it.
basically anything from nobuo uematsu (dont know if i spelled that right) was awesome. specifically final fantasy games and chrono trigger. one of my favorite soundtracks of all time is the one in Shinobi III on the sega genesis. the music in that game is severly overlooked. i love how the music works with every level/environment and it doesnt feel plugged in if you know what i mean.Â
Funny, been playing Dig Dug on XBLA and that tune is worth the price of admission. Every level, same tune, but brings the game up. Kameo had a wonderful soundtrack, even not having played it, Viva Pinata has a bunch of charming sleepy tunes. Diddy Kong Racing's was very notable. Super Mario RPG's, Jet Set Radio's, DDR -I'm sure others will catch some more
My big thing when it comes to game music now is getting myself to a point where I can identify who is the person writing the music by listening to a small segment of audio from a song in the game. Some composers have a much more distinctive sound than others, with good examples of this being the likes of Motoi Sakuraba, Kenji Ito, Yuzo Koshiro (to a degree, his Etrian Odyssey soundtrack sounds very much like his older sega stuff), Masashi Hamauzu, and so forth.
One thing that'll be kind of cool to hear is the range of composers working on arrangements for Smash Bros. Brawl. One thing that a lot of people noted was Nobuo Uematsu doing the theme song, and wondering if he was going to do anything else with the music...to which I assumed he would do very little else, as Uematsu's trade isn't as much in arrangement as it is strictly in composition.Â
Myst III and IV have phenomenal soundtracks by Jack Wall. The other games in the series are pretty good too but are by different composers. Jack Wall made unique ambient soundscapes that fit perfectly with the fantastical settings of the different ages in the games.
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is awesome too. The got a musician, Amon Tobin, who is not usually a film or game scorer but makes his own jazzy/hip-hopy electronic music.
