My list of Games you SHOULD play, that have great Atmosphere and Story.

I play mostly FPS and 3RD person games. I ONLY wrote the games i have already played and i didn't include GTAs or CODs. Add your's in the comment section.

Let's start:

-Mafia (first and second are both great, don't play the third)

-Max Payne (play all 3, but first and second for sure)

-Bioshock (third is my favourite)

-Metro (both! redux version)

-The Chronicles of Riddick-Escape from Butcher Bay (one of my all time favourites. Great atmosphere! You don't have to play Dark Athena, doesn't come close to the first)

-Wolfenstein (Return to castle, New order and Old blood)

-Half Life series (second and episodes is a must play- try with cinematic mod!)

-Call Of Juarez (the first one)

-Call Of Cthulhu (great game)

-Mirrors Edge (the first one)

-Rise of the Tomb Raider

-Portal (first and second)

-Condemned - Criminal Origins (great atmosphere, play as a detective)

-The Darkness (the second is great, haven't play the first, because i don't own a PS)

-Kingpin - Life Of Crime (hahaha it's fun and has a great ghetto atmosphere)

-Thief (great atmosphere. 1,2 and Deadly Shadows. I played those as a kid)

-Die Hard - Nakatomi Plaza (another game from my childhood. I like the way it connects with the movie)

-TRON 2.0 (atmosphere is great, but i haven't finished it yet)

-The Great Escape (old but gold. Try if you haven't played it)

-Oni (great gameplay, the fighting is fantastic. The only thing bad in this game is graphic)

-Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (I have the original CD, best of skating games for me)

-Prison Break The Conspiracy (well put together and connects with the series)

-Risen (I remember the first one when i was young)

-Need For Speed (Most Wanted and Pro Street are my favourite)

-The Thing (maybe i like this one because it's nostalgic to me. But i still play it sometimes and it connects with the movie.

-Red Alert 2 (classic)

-Age of Mythology

@timturkturcin: The Darkness 2 is a fun game and I really liked it but the first one is a masterpiece and I say this despite having to play it on a PS3 and thus use a controller for a first person shooter. The gameplay is worse (as I said, controller for first person shooter) but the atmosphere and the story are better than 2 and it has some amazing levels late game.

@pug987: yeah i belive you. I really want to play the first one. My friends have PS but don't own the game, too bad.

There are many new games with great atmosphere too.

Personally I found Mafia 2 to have better atmosphere than the first game, and also, Mafia 3 has good atmosphere to it, even if it is rather weak in other departments.

Nintendo has always been strong in atmosphere too. Zelda games, Metroid, Mario games and so on.

Stories are another matter. To have a game with both great story and atmosphere is rare. Mafia 2 was one of those. Mass Effect 1 too. Halo 2. Ocarina of Time, of course, and Resident Evil 1. Oh, and FF7.

Arkham series had masses of atmosphere and great stories too.

Limbo springs to mind; simple story and very atmospheric!

Good list. But really, Bioshock infinite is your favorite?

Some dubious entries, but not a bad list.

I know I'm surprised he added Infinite to that list but other than that it's not a bad list lol

Some of the walking sims like Ethan Carter and Everybody's gone to the Rapture are very atmospheric too.

@drrollinstein: yes i meant of all the bioshock games.

I know, thats whats so surprising. 1 is infinitely better and i've heard 2 is a good bit better too.

I'd throw Majora's Mask and a lot of the Silent Hill games on there. But there are some really great games on that list, like Condemned (forgotten but great game) and the Thief games.

Penumbra games are extremely immersive
