I'm curious to know about that.

AAA title development is treated very much like Hollywood does with respect to their own movie production. New studios are started so they can play the shell game of who pays who and no one really makes a profit since you can make ANYTHING look like a loss on paper if you shuffle the funny money around enough. Then, when the house of cards falls down - dissolve and start over.
It would be more interesting to actually see how many *different* groups of developers there are in game development these days - that's a better metric.
A lot
Can you make a list of the ones that you know of?

Who knows and who really cares.
The Business world is a hard place and if you make something people dont want to buy then you are out of luck and either quit yourself or is forced to close.
When studios close = less games being made.
After some research, this is everyone I could find that shut down within the 7th console generation.
Some sad losses in there, especially Factor 5 and Pandemic, specifically for there Star Wars games.

And? developers don't make games for fun, they make it to earn money, so if noone buys them, there is clearly not a need for those games.
Pretty much the shitty ones. Lately we are seeing the downfall of the devs who used to be awesome but lost their damn minds, namely Capcom and Konami.
Unfortunately a lot. I won't try to list all of them, but some of the more disappointing are probably Irrational games, Balckrock Studios, 3D Realms, EA Chicago, Japan etc., and Rockstar Vancouver. People are already calling Konami, though i'm not so quick to write it off, but we'll have to see what happens
