Trying to buy Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War 2 over Steam, but although the game was released long time ago I cannot find any purchase button. I assume the reason is I live in China for the moment, and the game was not launched in this country yet.

"yet" is an optimistic word though, as I except them to never sell the game here, then what can I do? :(

Rather than waiting for publishers to see the light about how to counter piracy by making it easy for consumers to buy their products, which seems to take a long time, I am looking for a workaround for this problem.

I know it might be possible for someone else to "gift" me the game, but thats not easy for me to arrange. I was thinking about using an American proxy perhaps, but not sure if it can work?

Anyone have a good suggestion of how to purchase this game from China through Steam or any other digital distribution stores?

Can you see 'Add to Cart' button under the price tag? If you don't, it indeed seems to be area restricted. You could try to buy it on Direct2Drive or order a retail copy from Hong Kong.

Right, there's no add to chart option. So seems I need to circumvent it somehow, if possible, or find a digital store which sells to China. Any ideas appreciated.

Checking D2D now... :)

Nope, D2D has the same restriction. :(

Okeydokey, I recommend Play-Asia (the second link) then. I see no reason why they wouldn't ship to mainland.

Thanks, just bought it from Play-Asia, and no problem. :) Very smooth and professional ordering system, even accepted Paypal without blinking. Wow, I suddenly feel so treasured, they actually - snif - want MY money... :D

Yeah, Play-Asia is awesome. I always use it if I need something imported to Europe.

I wonder something...the game still has to be registered through steam...so what will happen when you finally get it.

I just wanted to come in and say that I'm glad you got the game. Yup.

I think it is connected to Microsoft Live, so before playing you need to register through there...

I don't think the retail copy of Dawn of War 2 uses Steam. And Windows Live should work in China.

Just a quick update on this, I got a reply from the guys behind Steam (after digging literally for hours to find a way to contact them). They offered a way to pay using my Paypal account which is registered in Europe, but this gets interesting. I was looking into buying two games, and here is the price difference:

Drakensang:

Regular price: 29.99 USD
New price: 67 USD (49.99 EUR)

Warhammer Dawn of War 2:

Regular price: 49.99 USD
New price: 67 USD (49.99 EUR)

When did 49.99 USD equal 49.99 EUR? And, what's up with the more than double price on Drakensang?

I'm glad I bought the game through Play-Asia, Steam seems like a giant rip-off unless you are lucky to live in a priveliged country.:(
