for me its ff10, i bought the ps2 for rpgs, i thought the hype must be right, it felt hard at first and ok afterwards, i still haven't got traditional rpgs except suikoden 3 ,grandia 2, ff12, dragon quest 8, etc. for the ps2 but overall ff10 was a huge disappointment, currently i will be getting ffx-2 soon and hope its better.

so far its either ff12 or dragon quest 8 that gaved me the best next gen rpg experience, especially ff12 felt like it was a complete game, everything about it felt it had maxed out rpg gaming in general.

and this is a repeat topic for me, cause first i created it in off topic, then in asia topic and now where it belongs here, sorry.

Sim City 2013, it looked promising, but now I'm seeing that EA is blind as a bat about their fans.

If you didn't like FFX how could you be disappointed in FFX-2? I would've assumed you'd go into the latter with lowered expectations. Anyway, Final Fantasy 12 is my choice

Final Fantasy 8

Got it a few months ago because so many of the fans would whine about the new FF being inferior. and that SE should bring it back to the "golden age" of Final Fantasy (6-10), so I picked it up when I saw it at a flea market. Its not bad, but the battle system is kind of irritating, and the story and characters aren't hooking me so far. I don't hate it but I don't really love it either. Honestly had more fun with X, X-2, and XII

The multiplayer for call of duty 3 may have been lacking in features, but I genuinely enjoyed the campaign.

Bioshock and RDR, although RDR to a much lesser extent. For both, I kept hearing how "amazing" each one was, some people saying "best games of all time." I was pretty hyped for both, and was let down a lot. Bioshock was just a mess after the big twist was revealed, and dragged on for too long. RDR was nothing special, although I can say I enjoyed (most) of the campaign. (The reason I say most being because there were a bunch of missions near the beggining and end that were boring enough to almsot make me stop playing it.) Both are overrated, and don't live up to the hype, although I can say RDR was a good game with a straight face. Can't say the same for Bioshock.

After renting ffx for a few days just when it got released, I didn't buy it myself until years later. During the rental I didn't have much of a chance to play more than 10 hours. Years later I got both ffx and x2 at the same time, thus being disappointed with both.

A large list of these kinds of games, but I'll just mention a few:

  • No More Heroes: Just an awful game I thought
  • Smash Brothers Brawl: The idea of online gaming for this is great, the implementation was pathetic on Nintendo's part.
  • Fable II & III: I really can't think of more dissapointing sequels to a game that was great.
  • Alone in the Dark: Inferno: One of my favorite survival-horror franchises did not have a good modern outing

Far Cry 2 should have been a great game and was riddled with annoyances. Gun jamming (enemies guns work perfectly -_-), malaria, 4 fast travel spots miles away from each other, checkpoint guards respawning after 2 minutes, no save anywhere, driving 10 minutes to a 2 minute gunfight and so on.

Shadow of the Colossus: It had clunky controls and poor camera angles IMO

No More Heroes: It was too repetitive to me and I was disappointed with the city of Santa Destroy

God of War: I wasn't a fan of the QTEs and it felt like a button masher at times

I had a few burn me, Brutal Legend I got on day one but I ended up hating it. I hated the combat and how you had to order groups around. Didn't help the game dropped in price pretty fast. It's sad Tim Schaffer didn't do any more retail games. Same with Bionic Commando, I was so sure it was going to be a great action platformer. It was so bad and dropped in price too. Another disapointment was Matt Hazard, has such huge potential on parodying video games but ended up pretty darn average. GTA 4 is the biggest of all though, such a huge disapointment after San Andreas, has none of that feel. Definitly does not deserve a 10. DMC 4 is also a huge letdown after the very awesome DMC 3 which I think is one of the best action games ever.

So to sum up the short version: Brutal Legend, Bionic Commando, Matt Hazard, GTA IV, DMC 4. Assassins Creed was kind of a letdown too, but ACII made up for that.

Shift 2 Unleashed. Aside from improved graphics, everything else was poor compared to the first game, and it was very frustrating.

Mass Effect 3: The journal system and side quests were huge steps back for the series. There was far too much auto-dialog. Cerberus and Kai-Leng were bad comic book villains. And the ending was, well, atrocious.

Brutal Legend, Bionic Commando, GTA IVimmortality20
Brutal Legend was really fun for me, the combat was pretty generic, but I hate RTS, so that kinda killed it for me. It was pretty hilarious, though. I bought Bionic Commando a month or two ago($2) and I was really impressed. The only problem I had with it was when you swing forward, there's that invisible wall that murders your momentum. It got be killed on any number of occasions in the first few levels. I bought GTA4 strictly because it was the first game to have free roam multiplayer. I only completed the first campaign mission because I got tired of hearing "DADDY'S BACK, YOU B!TCHES!!" Every time I wanted to play.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon comes to mind right away. The introduction of the DFM mechanic left a lot of long-time AC fans very unhappy. While I did prefer the gameplay style found in the previous games of the series, it wasn't the new mechanic that had me left me dissatisfied with the overall expierience. My issue was with the short length of the campaign. I had been expecting a longer one (and a better story to go alongside it), given that the AC games had traditionally always placed an emphasis on the single-player expierience.

I didn't think AH was neccessarily a bad game as such. In fact it's a relatively enjoyable game in its own right, but it wasn't exactly the next AC game I had been looking forward to after the release of AC6 and Joint Assault.

Fallout 3, I absolutely hated it. Everybody told me it was so good and when I got it I thought it was just awful. Dull and boring world mixed with boring gameplay overall just a bad game in my opinion.

Killzone 2, killzone 3 (thought it was good improvement - boy was i wrong! again). Resistance 2, Final Fantasy 13 (the first FF for me, and i still haven't touched it's sequel). Empire Earth (seriously... fvck that strategy game, who on Earth can actually play that game).

those come to mind as the ones i had high hopes then were dashed.

there quite a few other games that i was looking forward to that i bought that ended up being disappointments. Game of Thrones RPG, Alpha Protocol, Dragon Age 2, Medal of Honor (the reboot).

that's all i can think of at the moment.

AC Revelations i still like, but i was a bit underwhelmed by the 'revelations' of the game.

Mass Effect 2, with enough hype and critical acclaim, I was expecting a masterpeice or at least something worth 9-9.5, instead I got a mediocre story driven game that pushed gaming even further into a downwards spiral complete with repetitive combat and awful level design.

I would have to say Deus Ex. I was under the impression it was going to be amazing, but I just couldn't get into it...I Don't Know why just didn't do it for me. It felt and looked "rushed" just not enough attention to detail in the things that caught my eye; could've definitely been more refined.

Gran Turismo 5. I pre-ordered that thing over a year before release, bought into all the hype, was expecting something truly spectacular. Then I got two-thirds of GT4 in hi-def. Good grief. Sony should have taken one look at the AI in that game and said "Sorry, this can't be released in this condition."

Uncharted 3 gets a mention too. Loved the first two games but the third was exactly the same thing, just in a different setting.

Combat is too repetitve? It's the way the original was too, with friends or without it. How exactly can they make combat ANY DIFFERENT? I don't see how. If it not broke, don't fix it.

In order from most dissapointing (never said bad but dissapointing):

1. Mass Effect 3: I have no idea how they manage to make this game...well, the publicity of this game answers itself.

2. FFXIII: Made me wonder why I ever played FF. "Grow the F up" and "stop crying" bombarded my mind along with its "we made a movie" vibe insulted me off the charts.

3. Dragon Age 2: My first reaction after beating this game is still the same opinion I have of this game--how the hell did this series go backwards in quality?

Borderlands 2. All the bullet sponge enemies and getting 2 shot through full shields by a random bandit made an otherwise awesome game a barely average one for me. The balancing didn't make it hard in a challenging fun way. It just made it super tedious for anyone who didn't want to spend a majority of their time in fight for your life mode.

Also the drop rates are absolutely terrible to the point where 9 out of every 10 items are duped versions of the one that someone managed to get.

Have really bad luck and still have terrible weapons? Here, go empty your entire supply of ammo into that thing that still won't be dead when you run out because it has approximately 10x more health than is reasonable and be careful doing it because you'll probably be subject to getting 2 shot because you also haven't seen a decent shield drop in the last 30 hours.

Still played it and the DLC to 100% platinum.
