No, I never really understood that. In almost all games, it seems that the ingame music fits much better than anything else. Plus, if you're listening to your own music how do you hear important ingame sounds?

Listening to music while playing games makes me feel distracted, and I'm unable to fully appreciate the game I'm playing. I never listen to music and play games unless the music is part of the game.

yes it does. it makes me much more jumpy too. in a game like css, music usually helps me a) have fast reflexes b) helps me suck( which is usually already in affect with or without the music)

I believe it does help you to a certain extent. Playing World at War no but MGS4 you need to hear people being sneaky in that game. It can get you pumped and the other person annoyed if you are playing online. It helps me.

Basically my view on the whole idea of listening to your own music while playing games. I actually find it distracting.

I find that it really does depend on the game that you're playing. For example You wouldn't play music, or at least not loudly, whilst playing something that required you to be listening eg. Splinter Cell. Then there's games like Guitar Hero, that speak for themselves in the sense that most players need/like to hear the music whilst playing because it helps you keep in time. (I know I do). Then theres games that may have a completely crappy soundtrack, so you just play your own music :)

Me personally, when playing a game like Gears of War, I love to crank the metal! It helps me enjoy the game a LOT more because in my opinion the music suits it :). So yeah it's heavily based on the individuals opinion, likes and dislikes.

Although I would have to say that I don't think Listening to music, whilst playing any type of game, improves your skill as a gamer... Just Practice and Hard work does that :P lol!

If its my first time through,or its a very story driven game with no subtitles(like Assasins Creed) I listen to teh in game. Otherwise, and I guess this is weird, I turn down the music in the options, leave on sound effects, and listen to sports talk radio.

In-game music is usually better because its made to fit the exact moments but generally it does help to create the right mood. Then again some games are better without music since you need to hear the in-game sounds for example counterstrike where hearing your opponents footsteps will help you to determine the direction its coming from.

I'm with you. I find the experience better when I hear what the designers intended for me to hear.

I usually listen to music while gaming, but it doesn't make me play better. I just rather listen to my music sometimes rather than the game itself, especially if I'm only level grinding or exploring.

i love listening to nickleback while im playing resistance online and for important ingame sounds, all there is is get the beacon kill the target and defend the beacon which you can read at the bottom, so i listen to nickleback and it helps me play better except from when i concentrate on the song and i sing along with it so then i get distracted and i start doing bad.

Oddly yes, you'd think it would be distracting, but as long as it's loud and has a steady beat, like

disturbia (rihanna)

sweet dreams are made of this (mariyn manson)

Techno Syndrome (the Immortals)

Dragon Ball Z- perfect cell theme remix

Not really. If anything I tend to block out the music when I'm concentrating on the game. So, it's more or less useless for me to try listening to music while gaming. That's why I think "in-game" soundtracks are stupid and I can't see why people cry about not having them.

I prefer the ingame music. If its a fighting game, I usually play instrumental music from fight/action scenes in movies/anime. If its late at night, sometime i'll play some mellow music. Other times I just mute all the music and only let the sound effects play.

If the in-game music bores me, I might toss on a CD if I feel like it. To this day I can't listen to After the Goldrush without the image of Skies of Arcadia's frozen dungeon popping into my head.

usually, it doesnt help. but if i were to stretch it and come up with a single situation, i might say that it makes me a more patient sniper in shooting games.

Kool & The Gang - Geometry Wars

Anaal Nathrakh - Unreal Tournament

Down/Eyehategod - Virtua Fighter

The above formula = happiness incarnate.

if the music is rubbish like in pokemon red when you're levelling up for the 87th time, i put it down and i might put a CD on. when i was playing FFXI online, i put my own music on when farming for items and gil. you get bored of the in-game music - it gets tedious.

otherwise, no! sounds are important for the game to function.

No. Unless it's in a racing game or other sports game where I can put my own music into it via a custom soundtrack then I find it to more distracting. I prefer to listen to the ingame music instead.

I always have some metal going when I play Fifa 09 and Forza 2, but most other games require more attention.
