For the time, they were remarkable graphics.

Not a lot to discuss. Yes, they were good for the time. Were they the best of any game that had come before? Not really, but they were pretty good and it was certainly the best for the type of open world console game that it was. Shenmue's acclaim didn't just come from the graphics, but a much more open-ended type of cinematic gameplay and storytelling and a level of complexity and detail in the world that hadn't been seen before.
