These get compared a lot, but it's clear Castlevania SOTN took a lot from Super Metroid. There is no Metroidvania for me, only Metroid. But I do enjoy the formula for SOTN was also a lot of fun.

I have to go with Super Metroid though. It has been owning games since 1994. Perfect gameplay, atmosphere, music, upgrades, secrets, boss fights, timeless graphics.

I love them both but Super Metroid is my favorite 2D game of all time. I could play either one start to finish a hundred times and still enjoy them.

I haven't had the pleasure of playing SotN (I really want to) but Super Metroid is a great game; when will Ninty make another Metroidgame like it?

Boy, that's hard... But...I think I like Metroid a little more. SotN is amazing, but I like the sci-fi feel of Metroid.

I love both games dearly, but I honestly over the years still cannot get over the fact of the voice acting in SOTN.
It's Metroid for me. Samus being a silent character at the time really made me think about her since she was a bit of a mystery.

SOTN had tons more replay value, and things to collect and do. You could play as Alucard, Richter, and Maria. Super Metroid is good, but SOTN wins this one easily.

Super Metroid was absolutely amazing! But I really wasn't a huge fan of it and I've never played SOTN but I know I'd like it more cause I'm a bigger fan of the Castlevania stuff that I've played than Metroid

I agree with most everyone else here. Super Metroid was amazing, one of the greatest games of all-time. It gets my vote. However, SoTN was a great game, too.

I think Super Metriod is the better game, but I personally prefer SOTN.

My favorite game of ALL time is "Castlevania : Symphony of the Night", so my vote goes to that for sure. I own "Super Metroid" as well, and have tried it a couple of times, but just can't get in to it. Not that it's a bad game, just doesn't have the same affect on me as SOTN.

These, for me, are two of the very best games ever created. Yes SotN borrows heavily from the Super Metroid formula, but is a fantastic game in it's own rite. BUT, i'd have to go with Super Metroid on this one, I still sit and play through it about twice a year, and havn't played though SotN since I unlocked it on one of the PSP castlevania games. Having said that, i think now is a good time to have another playthrough.

Metroid wins for me, but both astoundingly good games which are still more than very enjoyable today (that in itself says something about the quality of these titles).

They're both among my top 20 favorites ever, at the very least. I lean more towards Castlevania. Maybe it's because I'm more of a horror fan than a sci-fi fan, but everything about SotN is perfect and man...that soundtrack is sublime. I just seem to replay it more than Super Metroid.

I enjoyed both games quite a bit, but If I had to pick one , it would probably be Super Metroid. I think SoTN is a bit too modern to be considered "retro elite". =p

I love Super Metroid far more than SOTN. SOTN was just annoying, repetitive and a bland excuse for a Castlevania game to me (I grew up with the original four, they still remain my favorites and my view of a true Castlevania game).

I loved both, but SotN got extremely easy later on. Granted, Mother Brain was easy, but not "slash with the Crisagrim twice and kill Dracula" easy. Super Metroid gets my vote, but damn, they're both great games. Until I heard Nier's soundtrack I considered SotN to have the best OST ever. And to its credit, the castle was perfectly designed to function as a traversable map upside-down as well.

Lol easy, Metroid all the way. Sotn is just a cheap copycat, no respect from me.

Super Metroid (SNES) and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) have a place on my top 10 favorite video games of all-time and they areboth masterpieces in every way,but I have to go with....

Super Metroid is 100% EXCELLENCE. It's a video game I consider to be absolutely perfect in every way. The graphics, the music, the character, story, enemies, weapons, secrets, everything about it isjust flawless. I remember playing this game when it first came outand feelingtheatmosphere and musicdrawing me in,making me feel as though I truly was ina completely different world and even after all these years whenever I see gameplay footage and hear the music it takes me back to those moments in time. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a beautiful game with a brilliant soundtrack and plenty of positives as well, but Super Metroid is LEGENDARY!:)
