What's this "points" stuff?

I don't know where to put this but I found this in my profile just now,can anyone tell me what's the exact purpose of this?

the only known thing about this is "This number represents your legacy GameSpot points"

It's the number of points you accrued when levelling up on the old site. It'll be used in some way to give you a boost when the new levelling system is implemented.

If the new leveling system finally rolls out, do we still keep the points (or levels) from old GS?

I think they said your old level would still show up on your profile somewhere.
