Don't let the seemingly lighthearted content fool you.

User Rating: 8.7 | Fester's Quest NES
Fester’s Quest is just one of those games. You know, the type of game you don’t really know how to take it. What seems to be a lighthearted game based on a famous television series actually is more of a dramatic struggle.

The graphics are above average for an NES game. The main enemies are a little bland and repetitive, but the bosses are quite detailed and large. A game based on a 60’s television show you would expect goofy looking enemies with ridiculous weapons. Instead, the bosses look like they came from the Contra universe. The music provides an eerie ambience. I love the music for the above ground levels. Again, the music isn’t cutesy or poppy, but more dramatic and serious. This isn’t an easy game to transverse through despite it being based on something you wouldn’t associate being an action hero with. The levels are long and the enemies can be difficult. Most of the time you are trying to find your way through a maze. You can power up your gun, which you should do early on if you want to make your life easier. It will take up to a few hours to fight through the game, but you have to do it in one sitting since there isn’t a save or password feature. This may boggle some of the minds of players who weren’t around during the NES days where you had to play a game from start to finish without taking a break.

I wasn’t too sure how to receive Fester’s Quest, but the game quickly won me over with its cool music and engaging game play. Be warned, this is not an easy kiddy game. It took me awhile before I managed to beat it, but then again there wasn’t the internet to give me cheat codes. Instead, I had to wait for an issue of Nintendo Power to come out, but by that time I had it finished.
