A Very Decent Sequel, But Felt Far Harder Than It Should Have Been.

Back in the 1990's, I tried very hard to beat both of the original "Earthworm Jim" video games when they were released on the Super NES; but no matter how hard I tried, I legitimately couldn't beat the first one (and had to wait until the Game Boy Advance release to beat it), and I had to use the secret cheat code in order to see the ending on the second. Well, now that my gaming skills have grown much better since I was ten (and with a LOT of help from the Nintendo Switch rewind feature available on the Super NES Virtual Console service), I was finally able to legitimately able to beat this game. While the game features more of the same, absurdist humor that the first game had and more; it definitely works to this games' favor! The graphics, music, and sound effects are all top notch for a video game released as one of the last major masterpieces for the 16 bit era; but the controls felt like they SHOULD have had the option to customize them, as I kept forgetting the proper buttons for jump and whip swinging, and parachute floating. Also, even though this game is supposedly EASIER than the first, I actually thought it was harder. It's not so much the enemies, but rather the environments that Earthworm Jim has to go through. The stages are definitely par for the course as far as the "Earthworm Jim" video game series goes; but it's very annoying to have to go through "Villi People" and the annoying walls that take away your health, "The Flying King" where you have to send a bomb all the WAY to the boss in order to defeat it without it getting blown up by a minor enemy or accidentally blowing it up yourself before you're supposed to (or alternately, taking out all the enemies who CAN blow up the bomb BEFORE taking it with you, which is actually far MORE time efficient), "Level Eight" where you have to run away from the salt shaker and be aware of the heat grills that can take away your health. And of course, all THREE times you have to rescue Peter's 600 Puppies from getting splattered thanks to Psy-Crow! Don't get me wrong, the game certainly CAN be beaten, but this game will definitely make you WORK to win that victory, which you have to SEE the ending to believe! It's definitely a game for people nostalgic for the mid 1990's, and has a good, healthy sense of humor. Enough said, true believers!
