Where's the horror, the tension, the atmosphere? A good shooter yes, but everything else, no.

Oh dear. Another great franchise falls to it's miserable death. Not that this is a bad game. As an action shooter it's actually quite reasonable. The graphics look much better than DS1 & 2 as you'd expect and it runs butter smooth & feels like actual effort went into making the PC version of this game unlike the original DS. Anti-aliasing seems to be built into the engine rather than giving you a setting to raise or lower. The original DS frustrated me because AA never seemed to work( though you can slap FXAA on everything these days). On 1080 res & max settings DS 3 is a stunning jaggy free game. Serious eye candy & only in DX9 too.

I simply cannot be bothered explaining the story. If I was to recite Jack & the Beanstalk, you'd be getting a better yarn. I remember when Bioshock 2 went up it's own @rsehole with daftness & it's the same here. They're making this sh*t up as they go along. Isaac's got some grey hair now though. That's as interesting a fact as the games story believe me. Shocker. And if they can do eye transplants in Dead Space setting (Ellie got her peeper back), then why the hell do space suits only come with 250 seconds of oxygen.

It's not just the story that is lacking either. This is no longer a horror game as many folks have moaned about. Necro's have had a lick of paint & look smoother animation wise but it just ain't the same as timidly inching through the Ishimura not knowing what horror was about to attack. Necromorphs have zero shock appeal now. They are still fun to dismember but I grow weary of them. Dull human enemies don't make good alternatives either.

Another thing that irks me is all the crappy filler puzzles that, for some odd reasons the designers thought were cool. They're just not fun & interfere with the games action. And why oh why resort to an auto save feature that is very poorly implemented. Always have a stack of med kits in your pack because the game will auto save before a boss without giving you a bench beforehand. I have to say though, the boss battles are really easy when you suss their patterns but it's still poor. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The game is also full of those Hollywood blockbuster moments the franchise has become known for, but these have now become very predictable indeed. Oh look Isaac's being flung all over the place again, & escapes from the burning crashing wreck by the skin of his nut sac. It's still impressive but you kind of know what's coming when you get in an elevator, a tram or some kind of vehicle. The game isn't ashamed of revisiting what we've seen previously in the series.

The worst thing though about this whole thing - micro-transactions. I expect this from the foulest & dirtiest company on our planet but even by EA standards this is nasty. I guess choice is choice but I did find my arsenal a little lacking at times, but screw EA. I won't go there. I hear it can be cheated anyway. I completed the game a breeze without getting any. The weapon crafting system is definitely a success though, but if I was to make a minor complaint it can sometimes be a little time consuming & takes you out of the action longer than just sticking a node on your gun like last time.

Bottom line is Dead Space 3 is a huge disappointment in comparison to previous installments yet is still a very attractive & brutal shooter. It's seriously lacking shocks & scares though & the story is really weak. I don't know if I'll even bother with a new game plus when I put 3 or 4 completions in of the first DS games. I probably will but not straight away like I did with DS1 & 2. Oh, and where the f**k is the multiplayer? I actually spent many many hours on DS 2 mp so I was a tad disappointed a enhanced improved version never arrived for DS 3. And it's not like they put the extra effort into the sp. Balls to em.
