The apocalypse is here and damn does it feel good. Darksiders is just one of those games. If you enjoyed Zelda Ocarina of time, Twilight princess or the Legacy of Kain series then your in for a treat as this game is inspired by these great classics. Does it make it a classic game in itself? Quite possibly this could be the start of a very fruitful franchise. Written and designed by Comic artist Joe Madureira, where Darksiders may lack in the gameplay originality department, more than makes up for it in the overall design. The world created around Darksiders is a beautiful game environment indeed full of interesting characters and strange places. The graphics are so colourful it's like watching an oldschool animated movie. Thankfully it all moves fluidly too as you hack your way through a good 30 hours of gameplay. The fighting is varied and steers away from button mashing, making you learn the blocks and combos to be able to progress further. There is an upgrade system that allows you to exchange souls from beaten enemies for extra combos and items. Along the way you will also gain access to rather a lot of secondary weapons that will help you conquer the many puzzles in the levels, plus many a boss fight. Special mention goes to the puzzles in this game where many of them span entire castles and dungeons making you scratch your head more than once. Also I'd have to add that the boss battles are EPIC and extremely challenging as they have multiple hit points and we'll even have to use the environment against them. The chapters are varied and it never seems like your doing the same thing twice and there are a couple of shooting levels that really change the pace, one atop of a winged creature against killer angels.
The story is Ok I s'pose, perhaps a little predictable in the long run but will still keep you interested till the end. The sound is one of the high points in the game as the voice acting done is truly superb, featuring many well known actors. The score is equally grand and kicks in at the right moments adding to the situation, whether it be mystery, doom or action or all at once.
On the downside the controls feel somewhat clunky and innapropriate for certain situations and a couple of boss fights are made a tad harder for it, but it never ruins the overall game.
You get to start the game with 3 difficulty levels, easy, normal and Apocalyptic. I suggest playing on Apocalyptic, as I beleive that it is a nice challenge, especially if your used to this type of game, although maybe for the less initiated, or those that cried whilst playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma on normal may want to forget it and play on either of the other 2 difficulties as some of the boss fights can be a bit frustrating but highly rewarding if you like a challenge.
This a must buy for any PS3 owner. Roll on the sequel!
