Dark Souls challenging gameplay and difficulty isn't the hardest part of the game. 7 out of 11 actually agree read why.

User Rating: 7.5 | Dark Souls PS3
When I get a new game the first thing I do is up the difficulty. Developers often want their games to appeal to the masses and offer a some hand holding throughout the adventure. Dark Souls does not and I am fine with that but I do wonder if they should have waited to release the final product instead of this. I thought coming in that the difficulty was suppose to beckon back to the NES days of gaming. Challenging, but rewarding, gameplay with a sense of accomplishment was the main premise when dealing with the titles of that generation. Don't get me wrong, DS is a fun game and will test even the most "hardcore" player (most overused term by gamers today) but the camera, controls, and gameplay physics all get in the way.

Controls-While they do a decent job of controlling your character, they are not always responsive to the inputs by the player. I have a brand new DS3 controller to go along with the 2 other controllers that were already in my possession and it's the same result. Clicking R3 with an enemy in front to lock on does not always work. Performing my leaping attack (push the stick forward while pressing R2) is not always responsive. As many buttons that are available on a standard PS3 controller, you would think they could find a better way to perform key movements. I prefer the kick over the lunge attack when it comes to enemies but yes I do know each has their own advantages.

Camera-Where do I start? This part of the game should not even be a problem, I mean does my guy need to be looking at the ground after I kill a couple of enemies? So a quick flick of the right stick fixes the issue but you are not always afforded the luxury of not having a boss, enemy, or trap around you. Many times, I would be fixing the camera only to have another death waiting for me around the corner.

Gameplay physics-I love how you have different strategies when it comes to various enemies. More games should import that into their development phase. Sometimes even when having the advantage and hitting the enemy, the game does not always register the hit. Add on the fact that even when near a ledge (and I mean a foot or two away from it in the game) your character will be sucked through the floor and fall to his death?! This happened many times during the various levels in my adventures. I would fear me getting stuck in a wall, or falling off a non edge of a cliff more than dealing with the current bad@$$ trying to decapitate me! One time early on in my first character's play-through, I was talking to a NPC behind the cage door and I was able to lunge through. Great, now I am inside the game literally and I cannot escape. I did not think it was a big deal when it happened, but coupled with the other issues I have mentioned and it just kept building on my dissatisfaction with this game.

I really like the game and even bought Demon Souls to keep me going in the series and while I haven't completed that one yet (only got it yesterday) I still would recommend this to anyone who hasn't played it. Having beat Dark Souls 3 times now, I kept thinking after every play-through why did I not wait until the price drop? Good games won't get a price drop a couple of months after release but DS did. Currently can be found for $29.99-$34.99 as of this review and that price range has been in effect since mid January.

Why do I post this? Because this lets me know if you actually read it.
