A solid first foray into the FPS genre

User Rating: 7.5 | Coded Arms PSP
Coded Arms marks the beggining of the FPS genre on the PSP. And I must say, it is a solid first try. By no means is it revolutionary, but it's at least fun. Below is the break-down of everything.

Graphics: Coded Arms is a nice looking game. While the enviorments are repeating (more on that later) they look nice and the enemies are clear. What I really enjoyed however was the detail in the guns. Each has their own reload animation and particle effects. So in the end, Coded Arms ends up looking nice and clean, nothing more.

Sound: Coded Arms' sound is merely adequate. The guns sound nice, and techno music comes on when you are under attack. The ambient noices are there, but don't add anything to the mood, which they should. So Coded Arms remains "meh" in the sound department.

Gameplay: Coded Arms is a standard FPS. You got you're weapons, and you use them to kill the enemies. However, while Coded Arms is simply devoid of a story, (A major setback, in my opinion) it does have some features that help it stand out. First, your weapons can be upgraded. While they don't change their look, they do get more powerful. However, the mechanic used is a lame one, in my opinion. When you shoot an enemy and he randomly drops a weapon upgrade, you simply walk up and pick it up, and the upgrade is added to your current weapon. In order to add it to a different weapon, you must change guns and then pick it up. There is no way to move them around, which I dislike. Moving on, the second feature that is unique is the "Infinity Mode", which you unlock after beating the game. Allegedly it goes to 10,000 levels! Pretty cool. However, there are only 3 enviorments. Each level set in that enviorment is randomly generated, so that's a bonus. The control schemes (there are many to chose from) all emulate the feel of a second analog stick and the liberal use of auto-aiming helps a lot. So in the end, Coded Arms is simply a fun game, not revolutionary, not bad, and with good controls.

Story: There is none. That was easy.

Portability: All the stages are small and quick, great for the portability. Coded Arms excells in this department.

Polish: All the sounds, movements, and graphics are all smooth as silk and the levels load seamlessly. (With a cool Matrix-esque loading animation) All in all, Coded Arms is a solid game with few, if any bugs.

Overall: Coded Arms is the first FPS on the PSP, and deserves some credit for that. However, it is not going to win any awards, as it is a VERY simple game. But did I have fun playing it? Yes I did. I'm hoping the next iteration will have a more fleshed out upgrade system and an actual story. All in all though, if your looking for a simple FPS for the PSP, then you can't really go wrong with Coded Arms.
