Spectacular, easy to learn and -above all- fun!

User Rating: 8.3 | Bujingai PS2
Bujingai is basically a simplistic Devil May Cry with strong Hong-Kong swordfighting fantasy elements. You take control of a bigger-than-life swordsman named Lau, who questions the dominion of demons over the human race. The demons, in return, question his wardrobe. You wander yourself through eight levels of awesome hack-n-slash and platform action, gather spells and "unlock coins", fight huge bosses and in the end you get to (try to) save the world.

What you you will immediately notice in Bujingai is the amazing flair of the action. Huge swords, super-sonic speed, insane 70 hit combos and supernatural elements (you don't get to reverse the flow of running water in every game you play) make this hack-an-slash fun and easy to play.

While the action is nice and well, the enemies are few in variety, and the action gets a bit repetitive after a while. Still, the game is short enough and has more or less a different feel in every stage where the platform element is concerned, so that you won't get bored easily.

The storyline is a bit silly and two-dimensional, and the characters are basically uninteresting, but games like these aren't meant to be appreciated for their story, but for the action they offer. And Bujingai offers that in spades.

The music is satisfactory (I actually found Stage 1 and 8's clips to be excellent), and the sound effects are nice as well.

The gameplay is the game's biggest strength and weakness. Easy to learn and master, it will attract the light gamer/button masher, but combo-wizards are probably going to get bored easily. I, for one, found Bujingai very, VERY fun to play.

Bottom line? I ended up liking this game more than the Devil May Cry series (audience gasps), and look forward to more slashing insanity in the future. But those who wants a LOT of substance in the combo system are going to be disappointed.
