Despite it's glaring flaws, this game is a must-have for any baseball fanatic.

When the original Gameboy was first launched, one of the early titles that Nintendo released was a now-simple baseball video game Now that almost two decades have passed, this game is the subject of this reveiw.

Graphicswise, they are very good in it's own right. The players in this game look a little bit stubby, but that's just the graphical limitations of the system. You get two views--One of the batter's box, where the pitcher throws his pitch, and one of the entire playing field, whenever the ball is hit. When you hit a home run, the words "home run" appear in very large letters. While there are baseball video games whose graphics dwarf this game nowadays, back in 1989, they were very good.

As far as sound is concerned, the game makes use of the 8-bit sound processor on it's own. The sounds of the bat hitting the ball are unrealistic, but still good. The crowd roars in all it's 8-bit glory, cheering when a run comes across the plate. As usual of baseball video games in it's time, the game has music, which somewhat holds it's own. Of course, if you've been playing baseball video games since the PSOne era, you can turn the sound off if you wanted to.

Controlwise, they're good, if not a bit sloppy. You got your standard pitching, batting and fielding controls, which is what every baseball video game must at least have. One complaint I have with the controls is that the fielders move as slow as a turtle wearing iron boots, which could cause some problems if you want to play a fast-paced game of baseball while riding the public bus or train.

In regards to gameplay, it's really fun, Although you only have two teams to choose from, they're both the same in attributes, which gives it a lot of parity if you want to play a multiplayer game with a friend, via link cable. What makes this game really fun is the intensity of the artificial intelligence. The A.I. plays like a New York Yankees team built together by George Steinbrenner, usually getting a ton of hits and home runs off of you. However, just like a Steinbrenner-assembled Yankees team, you can actually win against the A.I. with a lot of skill.

Overall, this is a good baseball video. While there are at least a ton of baseball video games I could reccommend over this one, this is a really good one to see the evolution of the genre.
