Xbox exec responds to $399 Xbox One rumor

Chief of Staff for Devices and Studios Group at Microsoft said that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet.

"No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet," Chief of Staff for Devices and Studios Group at Microsoft Aaron Greenberg said on twitter when asked about the rumor that Microsoft will drop the price on Xbox One to $399.

The rumor about the lower price point came out of a NeoGaf thread that supposedly leaked a lot of Microsoft's plans for the future. It suggested that the company is working on releasing a white Xbox One console, that Halo 5 will be coming in 2015 while Halo 2 Anniversary will be released this year, and that Crackdown 3 is going to be announced at E3 2014.

The news was then corroborated by a couple of sources.

When GameSpot last contacted Microsoft, it said that it does not comment on rumor and speculation.

No matter if the leak is true or not, Microsoft recently announced that you can get an Xbox One for $399 if you trade in your PlayStation 3 at a Microsoft store.

Of course they're going to say that. They're going to ride the $499 price tag all the way out until they introduce a new pricing and/or model. It'd be stupid to say yes and lose out on potential customers who would continue to garner your company profit. Personally, I can't buy a console until December. Don't have the time or the money to invest, but if they do make a terabyte Xbox One with a more competitive price, that would be an easy buy for me.

If and when MS releases a new XB1 with a bigger hard drive, then they'll lower the price on the first one. That's what they did with the 360.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was true. They might to want to lose even more ground to Sony and maybe taking a hit in the price now will help their install base which is better in the long run..

the full quote went like this

"No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet.  We already lost enough money as it is, we can't afford to cut the price down to PS4 price points.  Also it should be noted that I don't play videogames but the PS4 is obviously the better system.  I'm sorry I have let all our fans down. GO SONY"

They will drop the price this year. It doesn't matter that it's selling better than the 360 did at the same point in time, it matters that they are gettting their arse whupped by Sony right now. Or at least that's what Sony wants us to believe. Regardless, the press and overall attitude is that the X1 can't hang with PS4. MS has to take some measures very soon. I guarantee it will be 399 sometime this year.

People still care about Crackdown, even after that less then desirable sequel, but then again Xbox gamers can't be choosers.

I feel like I'm the only one who wanted that xbone.  I don't give a shit about discs and the white colour is something I'd prefer over black anyways.  I for sure won't buy one for $500 since it's only going to be a console exclusive machine for me.

But man that white is so sexy.

They'll drop the price on the original system next year. Especially if it doesn't meet their sales goals. The systems is currently selling better then the XBox 360 did at launch and the XBox 360 didn't have any competition at the time.

My prediction is the price will drop on the original model in feb. 2015. However they may release some other model with something missing and that will have a lower introductory price point.

@bigtimemad  That'd be cool if that something was the Kinect. Then I might consider a purchase.

I'm tired of all the black. Any other colour would be nice. However, it doesn't change the tech inside, so it isn't that big a deal. The price ($600 here), however, does.

Well seeing as consoles always drop substantially in price EVENTUALLY - we will definitely see a $399 XBox One. When? Not sure. Maybe 4 years from now. But you read it here first, folks: CONFIRMED :-P

I would rather they raise the price and use better hardware.

@noandno i trust the internet more then i trust microsoft at this point in time

C_A_G_E
C_A_G_E

@noandno  It makes sense that MS will try to drive down the production cost after initial launch. So i would go with both. Yes MS is driving down production cost but that does not mean it carries down to the consumer level. Meaning they stop loosing on everyone sold and actually make a profit and the price stays at 499

@neowarrior121 I don't know, I am not trying to be a fanboy, but I would think that being one of the most profitable companies in the world would involve some kind of "intelligence" and "smarts". You don't get to be that successful by dumb luck only.

Just buy what you can afford and be happy. Not sure why if you own a PS that you are so mad about everything xbox. Stop being worried and enjoy what you have.(or do not have)

"No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet,"

This seems like an intentionally misleading response, that aims to avoid confirming the rumors, but that also avoids directly denying them as well. Wouldn't it be easier for everyone if MS just outright rebutted the rumors, or alternatively, confirmed them, so that people who might be waiting to buy an X1 – who don't know whether or not to wait for a price drop – knew what to do?

I don't believe anything I read anywhere let alone the internet. I saw earlier today a headline that said you shouldn't drink milk. And then there were the "studies" about how coffee is now good for you. I am just waiting for "them" to say air is now bad for you so don't breathe, or if that's not the case, they will start to charge money for it. I know this doesn't necessarily apply to that sort of thing, but it does state the obvious. I am beyond sick of the whole control thing, especially by fear or taking advantage of the masses and their stupidity. Fucking sheep.

Total_mischief
Total_mischief

@tightwad34  Headlines will say milk is bad when the studies show that too much milk is bad due to the overdose of calcium, headlines will also say that coffee is good when studies show that moderate amounts of cafeine have their benefits. The beauty of the internet is that you can easily cross reference studies and documents and verify the sources and how the studies were conducted.

Why would they even consider dropping the price? At this point it wouldn't make much sense, it's too early for that.

Zerabp
Zerabp

@warriors30 As much as I dislike what the XB1 represents I completely agree they sold over 2mil retail at their current pricepoint and shipped over 3 million to retailers. It would be incredibly stupid for them to lower the price.

Sold over 3.2 million and shipped  3.9 million*.

About 700,000 in dust.
