Witcher 3 for Xbox 360 or PS3 would be impossible, dev says

CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski says, "It would have to be a different game--a small game, not an open-world game, or with terrible loading times, with sacrifices in graphics."

Polish developer CD Projekt Red has ruled out bringing its upcoming open-world role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

"It’s impossible. It would have to be a different game--a smaller game, not an open-world game, or with terrible loading times, with sacrifices in graphics," CEO Marcin Iwinski told MCV India.

Instead, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming exclusively to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC sometime later this year. Iwinski also said in the interview that there is no truth to the rumors that CD Projekt Red is working on a PS3 version of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

"We definitely would have loved to, but The Witcher 2 on PC was so big that making it work on Xbox 360 took us a year," he said. "The Xbox 360 was a more powerful and easier-to-code-on platform than PS3, so that would have taken us another year or year-and-a-half."

Finally, Iwinski said the difference in quality between the Xbox One/PS4 version of The Witcher 3 and the PC iteration is "not huge" because the new consoles are "actually brand new PCs."

"So I think gamers on each platform will get an extremely good experience and they should be very satisfied with the quality," he said.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launches later this year. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

It will be one of the best games of this year

the PS3 usally used textures that where only half the size of comparable textures on the X360, that made it more difficult to create games for PS3 and also was a Major disadvantage for every game not developed execlusiv for PS3

About time developers moved forward and stopped trying to make new games work on all the systems. The PS3/360 are definitely holding back any game that tries to pull that off. It's time to move forward.

Wait he said the 360 is a more powerful console than the ps3, is that true? I always thought the ps3 had a lil more power hardware wise.

Console gamer logic=

New console releases= "ERMAGHERD TEH GRAPHICS!!"

PC gaming gets brought into the conversation= "Graphics aren't everything blah blah blah"

Double standards. Dirty console peasants. The truth is, you all knock PC gaming, but no amount of youtube videos will ever showcase what even a mid grade gaming rig can do to expand the level of immersion a PC game brings to the table. It's not just visuals either. Modding tools, cheaper game prices, even something as miniscule as loading times.. the sheer flexibilty of a PC in general sets it in it's own league as the best gaming experience out there and always has.

I'm not knocking consoles because I own them too. I'm a huge JRPG fan and you can't find those on PC. Exclusives are a beautiful thing. If i was as ignorant as some of you are I would have missed out on The Last of Us.

I'm just saying, stop being ignorant gamers. Don't knock it until you try it.

Go around this website and ask folks who've taken the plunge into PC gaming recently if it was worth it.

I guarantee you 100% will tell you "FUCK YES IT WAS".

They ALREADY have to make sacrifices for PS4 and Xbone.

Solution: Somehow work a mysterious fog into the storyline to shorten render distances. N64 logic FTW!

Even if this is just hype it doesn't matter. This game will be damn good.

So glad to hear that there are games coming out for the new systems that really are only possible on those systems.  To me, this next generation should be about doing things that the last generation could not.  It's part of why I'm not as excited about Watch Dogs as I'd like to be.  I also find myself questioning whether the 360 version of Titanfall will merely be a graphical downgrade or if the gameplay itself will be affected as well, since that's being developed/ported by an outside studio; the fact that it's coming to the 360 at all is still somewhat disconcerting to me.

Knowing that The Witcher 3 is only possible on next-gen platforms is reassuring.  It's nice to know there are developers out there that are actually trying to push forward and do something other than just making prettier versions of games that are also being released on older, more common platforms.

All the titanfall, infamous ss, and Destiny hype is great and I look forward to playing those titles. But the Witcher 3 is my most anticipated.

@rickphoenixxx It was supposed to but only a couple of developers were ever able to put it to use. In most cases the 360 versions of games were superior. I have both systems so no fanboy either way here. I just know from my own experience that 9 out of 10 times the games looked better on the 360. The PS3 was just really hard for developers to work with because of the unusual system architecture. Thankfully that changed with the PS4 and now Sony really does have the more powerful system.

@DeusEx2013

I only had one GTX 680 and the game had everything automatically set to ultra except for that crazy new ubersampling.  To me it looked good enough on high settings @ 1080p.  I don't think even SLI computers were able to do ubersampling at higher than 30 to 40 FPS.

@Rushaoz You're an idiot. Good luck trying to play Halo or Gears of War on a PC.

nl_skipper

@Rushaoz Yea it's all about PC flexibility.  You can play on super high graphic settings even if your PC is old if you can live with the low FPS, or you can upgrade if you wish to play on ultra with high FPS, or you can lower graphics to play on older machines with good FPS,  and many times even very old PC's will run games on low settings with a low FPS  (when I say low FPs I mean like 25-30 which is what the last gen consoles recent games seem to be at), which some people can still accept.  Then you've got mods that allow you to create, or use the creations of other people, some of which can entirely change a games experience, or create a new game altogether.

You've also got a choice of control input for most games,  it's easier to setup multiple screens of different sizes and position, depending what you plan to use your PC for... I could go on but yea,  graphics is really just the icing on the cake of infinite options, and the graphics alone give you a large array of options for system of all strengths.

@Sideways8_4ever well they can sell to a market share of 160 million or less than 10 million, you work it out

@Grimkillah Nice to see another RPG fan, but what is Transistor? It's all about Dark Souls 2 until I get my first fill and move on to something else(for the time being).

@deadjdona Yeap, It is way easier for a parent with no PC background to buy their kid a console then it is for them to buy a gaming PC.

JustinRiden

@Darkhol0w

not going to lie but it might not actually work. if the witcher 2 at maximum settings and 1080p pushed computers to the edge he might not be able to get the game to work at 60fps. crysis 3 with his setup manages a bit over 60fps so i don't know might be close

Rushaoz
Rushaoz

@nl_skipper Yeap. that's why I get so angry at the misconception that PC gaming is expensive. I can build a PC on Newegg now with more horsepower than the PS4 or XBone for around the same price as an XBone give or take a few dollars. With that PC, even if you decide not to upgrade AT ALL until the next gen of consoles release, that PC will still offer better performance than either console until the next crop of consoles appear.

People think that PC gaming= $$$$$

No, it's whatever you make it to me.

PS2fweak

@MigzBR @deadjdona It's 2014. No such thing as a "parent with no PC background". And if you had kids, or nieces/nephews etc. you would know that portables and tablets are for kids. It's stupid to make ridiculous statements like that, but at least try to make some sense.

Buying a console is no different than buying a gaming PC. Go to the video game section of a store and tell them you want something to play games on. You can do the exact same thing in the computer section.

DeusEx2013

@JustinRiden I think there were some  bugs in Crysis 3 , when I put Ultra high the FPS rate is 55 to 60 , not always 60 !!

Darkhol0w
Darkhol0w

@JustinRidenUnless you use the highest AA setting and use a 4k monitor I don't see how you don't reach 60fps with his specs in Crysis 3. Also, Crysis 3 was poorly optimized so keep that in mind.

@Rushaoz@nl_skipper You're wrong. I spent the amount of money that would get you an Xbox One for a video card *ONLY*. No way that would last me 8 years. PC hardware goes out of date fast, PC gaming is very expensive.
