I chanced upon this deal by accident when I randomly decided I need to play these games, I must say the Witcher as a whole has been a challenge to get to grips with but its fun, and I look forward to Witcher 3.

I saw that deal when I started Steam today and am currently downloading it. I've been waiting so long for such a deal to arrive and now I can finally continue Geralt's journey. I got TW1 on GoG and now I'm gonna get TW2 on GoG as well, since you can get a free copy of it if you already own it on Steam. I've gone through the first game several times and with different endings/decisions, so now I will finally get to see how much different they make the second game.

Amazing deals. Two of my favorite games of all time.

Another small step in the right direction for Linux.  I probably won't install it for Linux anytime soon but I'll be curious to see if they'll actually have a fleshed out graphics menu.  Anyone who played Metro Last Light on Linux is probably familiar with the one option being the 'quality bar.'  Regardless keep them coming, better for the long term health of the PC gaming market, and gaming in general, if Linux can become a viable gaming platform.

I really, really wish Steam was available on the consoles.

Hooray for Linux gaming. Power is the people!

Nice!   I'll hop on to Steam and buy it just to support them (again).

Very nice. :) Will be replaying this on Linux. It is very replayable anyway and I only played it once, and I do love me my Ubuntu 14.04.

Steam's statistics are currently showing that around 2% use Linux and it's likely to go up. It isn't that many (if you sell a million copies 20,000 of them will be played on Linux machines) but the Linux community have an uncanny knack for being very generious both in terms of funding but certainly also in terms of community support. This undoubtedly has a lot to do with the founding principles of the OS they use.

The games are a steal for this price. Get them ASAP, they're probably better than Witcher 3 next year.

The Witcher 2 with the enhanced edition content is an incredible game, this is a steal. Can't wait to get into the Wild Hunt.

Maybe I'll grab the original Witcher game since I've never played that one before.

@KimCheeWarriorX  Less than 2% of computer users use Linux so very few games ever make it to Linux.  I Dual boot Windows7 and Ubuntu.  Hopefully one day Linux will increase the market-share and break the Mac/windows PC duopoly, problem is until there are games on the platform people won't make the switch, and until people make the switch devs won't make games for it.

If you want to support open platform development and DRM free gaming, you have to go with PC. Or you can support the corporate douchebags at Sony and Microsoft. Your choice.

@IndremaLover Why?  You volunteered to be a captive customer on a locked down box.  You're getting what you asked for.

It's really quite ironic considering Nvidia was always regarded as a pain in the OpenGL and Linux users and developers ass while AMD was always seen as an open source hero.

Kunasha

@xcollector The game will probably with with AMD Radeon provided you download FGLRX (FireGL and Radeon for X11 drivers is the full name), but I can't guarantee it. FGLRX is notoriously horrible even at the basic stuff like rendering the desktop.

Once AMD gets their arse out of their rear the problem will go away - and they will because they don't want to miss out on the SteamOS cake. In fact they're already working really hard on it right now.

Saidrex
Saidrex

@xcollector current Radeon drivers have problems with OpenGL and have no required OpenGL features to run this game. Blame AMD for such sh*tty support of their products.

@blackace You'd be much better off skipping the first game. It's kind of a mess of annoying gameplay mechanics that for some reason people see as "hardcore". The Witcher 2 was leaps and bounds better than the first game in every imaginable way.

In my personal opinion at least, the first Witcher is one of the most overrated RPG's I've ever had the misfortune of being pressured into playing. People called it a hardcore RPG. It's not. Dark Souls is a hardcore RPG because of it's high level of difficulty and punishing gameplay if you mess up. The Witcher just adds on a ton of tedious gameplay mechanics that people somehow also see as hardcore.

Although I'm sure someone will say otherwise, just avoid the first game. It was a horrible first entry that almost made me refuse to play the second game.

@slappy54 @IndremaLover  Or, you can have none of the hassle of building and constantly upgrading and buy 1 machine which offers fantastic games which look amazing for one price of $400. I'm a PC gamer by the way, and I can say that consoles are totally relevant.

@youmadd @IndremaLover PC elitist dickheads such as yourself cannot seem to stick the fact that not everyone can afford a badass gaming pc through your overinflated heads. Its great that you can afford such a machine, but theres no reason to be an asshole to people who are not as fortunate as yourself.

@MAD_AI @xcollectorOld news is old.  NVIDIA recognized that Valve getting behind something meant it had a high probability of succeeding, and they better get in on the ground floor while AMD is asleep.  NVIDIA has been turning out excellent Linux drivers for years now, in fact Valve brought some NV engineers in-house to help with SteamOS.

xcollector

@Saidrex And so I shall. Curse you AMD! Radeons were better when ATI was still around.

I'd take The Witcher over Dark Souls any day. The Witcher is the full package, while Dark Souls only has good gameplay.

LordCrash88
LordCrash88

@Auriken @blackace  The first Witcher is pretty damn fine. Of course the technology isn't the best compared with some state of the art games of today, but it has other values. The game has "heart and soul", which means a good story, great atmosphere, mature storytelling, great soundtrack. And your comparison to Dark Souls is absolutely pointless since the games are not comparable in the slightest. Dark Souls is a console action game with some RPG elements while Wicher 1 is a real computer RPG with everything that is connected to the term. Witcher 1 doesn't define itself by any difficulty or by gameplay alone. If you only play games "as toys" Witcher 1 might be the wrong game for you, absolutely. If you expect a broader experience in gaming, something for your mind and soul as well (and not only for your skill with using a gamepad) you shouldn't miss out on BOTH Witcher games... ;)

@Auriken @blackace  I disagree. Brilliant gameplay mechanics, awesome story, etc. May 2 opinions stand together.

So, you can afford to buy a $400-500 console, and a HDTV....but you can't afford to buy a $100 videocard that can play ANY game out right now on high settings at 1080p?

SingletreeAve
SingletreeAve

@dani_i89 @kalipekona @slappy54 Hmm... Spending $400 on a gaming system to play new releases on minimum graphics settings. Perfectly describes the Xbox1 and PS4.  At least you can upgrade a $400 PC.

jameson420
jameson420

@kalipekona @slappy54 Not a good long term alternative, 600 bucks my ass. you will put 200-400 bucks more by years end. Who are you kidding..

jameson420
jameson420

@slappy54 Ha malarkey keep telling yourself that when you have to upgrade something every year or so or it's out of date or unable to run certain games. PC gaming is expensive and goes beyond the price of the PC. You're right a decent gaming PC goes for about 750 bucks or more, but I can buy 4 or 5 games plus my console for that same price and never have to upgrade my console over the same 10 year cycle i'm betting atleast another 750 will be spent on you're PC and that is a ridiculously low estimate. every 5 years or so you're GPU or CPU will need to be upgraded or replaced and to top it off you can't ever sell a PC game back or trade it in when you have no need for a game any more. I think there are more cons to PC gaming than console gaming IMO..

dani_i89
dani_i89

@kalipekona @slappy54  $400 for a gaming PC? That might barely allow you to play newish games on minimum setting for about 6 months. Shortly after building, time to upgrade every screw to ensure new games run adequately.

Vaishakhk

@oddjob117 @youmadd @IndremaLoverWhere I live, its actually cheaper to buy a badass gaming pc than a PS4. It also comes with an added advantage that pc games cost one third of console games on retail at launch.

llong187

@oddjob117 @youmadd @IndremaLover

IMO PC gaming is not about how deep your wallet is, but more about how willing you are to learn about building a system. It's been proven time and time again that you can build yourself a PC for around the same cost of a console. You just have to invest the time and learn a thing or two about PC's. Now that is something most people are not willing to do. They look at pre built PC's from places like alienware or Ibuypower and see those prices. Then they push the myth that PC gaming is crazy expensive.

Basically, what I'm getting at is most people are not willing to learn. That's why consoles have there place.

kalipekona

@slappy54

More like $200 more. You can build a decent gaming PC for $600. If you can spend $400 there is no reason you can't save up a little longer and get a gaming PC that does a million more things than a console and also will be cheaper in the long run due to cheaper games and not having to pay to play online. It has nothing to do with being unfortunate, it's a choice.

@LordCrash88 Oh but there you have it! I am running the game on a 5870 card better than many higher-end nvidia cards do. Know why? Open-source drivers, patched by the community within hours of the game's release. This is what Windows users don't get; yours is the McDonald's experience. You spit in the face of code craftsmen, screaming high glory to the alienated, corporate computing and gaming experience that is Microsoft Windows. All your freedoms gladly given up in the name of convenience. Yet, you sadly look at us rejoicing in our simple freedom and way of life. You wonder; "Why do they look so happy?".

I am happy for I am free. When my system crashes, I can blame only me or report the log to a volunteering developer. The lines between OS and its admin, devs and users are blurred. We are community. We do not screw one another. We protect and help one another. My way is less convenient only for the minutes or hours it takes for my kin to patch, fix or update the source of my inconvenience. You have to beg and wave the pathetic stack of cash you paid for your OS to Microsoft, hoping someone will hear your righteous cries. I simply call out to my kin.

Do not underestimate the penguin, my good Lord. For every problem that my kin help me solve, I breath fresh air of freedom. A user, after all, has nothing to lose by switching to Linux, but his/her chains.

@LordCrash88 "If you just want to play games without much trouble Windows is the way to go."

...for now.   Let's review in a few years once the Steambox has been out for a while.

LordCrash88

@Pyrosa @LordCrash88 @xcollector @Saidrex  Why? People who use Linux should be prepared to face such problems. If you just want to play games without much trouble Windows is the way to go. OF course you can blame AMD for their lacking support of OpenGL but by using Linux you have to take that risk...

@dani_i89 @LordCrash88 Don't worry about it. Not everyone is capable of understanding Linux. One day you'll wake up to the Stanly Parable and find your self alone when you are the last Windows user.
