Wind Waker HD, brand-new Zelda in the works for Wii U

Nintendo to release updated version of Legend of Zelda RPG for Wii U this fall; new entry that will "rethink conventions" of Zelda also on the way.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is getting a high-definition remake. Nintendo announced this morning during a presentation that an updated version of the 2003 GameCube role-playing game is due for release on Wii U by this fall. It will boast remastered graphics and GamePad functionality.

In addition, Nintendo today confirmed the existence of the long-rumored Wii U Zelda game.

This game will "rethink the conventions of Zelda," according to producer Eiji Aonuma, and will be a back-to-basics title. Nintendo said it will be some time before it shares additional concrete information about the game.

The most recent Zelda title was 2011's The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has sold more than 3.42 million copies.

I think a the Wind Waker indeed deserves a HD version :)..

Remember that moment when Link went to the bottom of the sea and saw the old Hyrule frozen in time, all in black & white..?  And that moment when suddenly it all came back to life...  As an all time Zelda fan I thought that was touching, and nostalgic.

Nothing will ever beat OoT... that epic moment when the series went 3D was just so awesome and so perfectly done, it will never be surpassed.  But always looking forward to new titles... Although I didnt like Skyward sword that much.  my favorite zelda games:

1. Ocarine of Time     2. A Link to the Past    3. The Wind Waker     4. Majora's Mask     5. Twilight Princess

Scumbag Nintedo: Fans ask for Majora's Mask HD, gives Wind Waker instead.

Wind Waker HD, am excited for. Unless a new Legend of Zelda title is taking place with the princess as the star of the series and not the mute Link, do not care.

Dear Nintendo:  Ocarina of Time is considered by many to be the best Zelda game ever created.  Please look to this game for inspiration.  I would be entirely satisified with a Zelda game that was built like this and gave the player a completely open world in which to explore while not holding the players hand between point A and point B.  Please do not re-invent the most classic and loved series in the history of gaming.  Polish and refine the experience. But please, do not reinvent it.

The way I see it, Nintendo can only sell me on their product one of two ways.  Either actually work with third parties, come out with new IP's etc, or if they are going to remake stuff, remake EVERYTHING.  Mario 64, Zelda OOT, Zelda MM, Mario kart, Smash brothers, the whole nine yards.  Doing what the original wii did in terms of product cycle just isn't sufficient for me to buy their console.  I will just emulate instead if that is the case.

I admit to having not played 2 Zelda Games: The Adventure of Link, and Wind Waker.

Now I have a good opportunity to play it, and probably Zelda 2 on the new Virtual Console. Not sure if I wanted a remake of this or Link to the Past...nah, better save that for 3DS...

This is the first thing the Wii U is offering that has sounded remotely tempting for me. They have a long way to go before I'm sold on it but this is a step in the right direction. Wind Waker and REmake are the only 2 reasons my GameCube hasn't been sold just yet.

Dang, we're not gonna get the new Zelda until 2016, LOL. Ah well...

Nintendo, just make Zelda for other consoles. Guaranteed to make you money. I'm not buying a WiiU just for Zelda or remakes of old classics (which  is what I pretty much used the Wii for)

I am a huge Wind Waker fan, so will likely pick this up at some point.  But, at the end of the day, I am not sure that this tittle really needs a graphical upgrade.  I would rather have had them simply release the original as a down load for 10 to 15 bucks and then give us an updated and remade Mario Sunshine.

Oh man. People like sundfeld always make me ashamed of being a Zelda fan. If you like Zelda, yet hate Wind Waker, there's something wrong with you.

On topic: I've played and finished Wind Waker 6 or 7 times. Prettier graphics will probably not make me want to play a game I already know by heart. It's a masterpiece, yes, but the game still looks fantastic and doesn't need an update. I'd think about getting it if it was about 20 bucks tops or something.

F*** OFF!!!! why windwaker?!?!?!?! I would have loved to see a real remake of Majora´s Mask just asi it is showed in the fan video!

But no! they have to get oput the only game I will never play because it was the first with those BS graphics!

So it is an HD remaster, not a remake. With added Wii U control functionalities.

I had fun with WW in the past but... don't have strong reasons to get this HD version. The game has few dungeons (although they are quite lengthy), tons of side quest but the whole thing about sailing was kinda a drawback for me. After 2 hours going from isle to isle it gets a little annoying. Not to mention the last battle with Ganon, that is the easiest of all Zelda games.

So, gotta stick with my GC copy.

They are going to need lots and lots of Zelda games and Mario games to help them when the big two bring out their next gen guns. Big N doing what they do best - remake old games to keep their zombie fan base happy.

I love how in the wake of the 3DS' second year, there is yet an announcement of an original Zelda title for the system, yet with Wii U being available for only a few months, there's already a remake AND original title in the works. Not that I'm saying it's a bad thing (I sure love me some Zelda downtime), but I've been anxiously waiting for Nintendo to announce the next 3DS game. I suppose it's a little biased because I own a 3DS and due to harsh economic problems, I won't be able to afford a Wii U until later in the year, but if Nintendo's gonna pull this, it makes me feel a 3DS Zelda title is a bit overdue.

Man HD graphics are awesome, they make a huge difference even in colourful artistic looking games like WW. I don't mind some HD remakes of old Nintendo classics, in fact that makes me want to buy a Wii U as long as I can get it cheap.

Nice. I never beat this one, so maybe the updates will give me the patience to finally finish it.

Of course you need to come out with a Zelda game every couple of years or so and a Mario game every six months, but come on hit us with something completely unpredictable.

Ultima_Dragoon

You guys fall for this every time. Nintendo releases one of their AAA titles and everyone goes crazy and buys the console instantly.

2 years from now when you only have a small selection of quality first-party games, don't blame Nintendo. Blame yourself for getting sucked in AGAIN.

@kornman74547

Since when is acknowledging that a company is doing poorly amount to hating that company?

You don't watch much sports do you?

I'm a NY Giants fan for American Football.

We had an AWFUL season last year, they sucked.

Yet I'm still a Giants fan.

Stop calling people "retards" and then making false assumptions that are quickly and easily disproved.

If you are a Zelda fan and you like Wind Waker then there is really something wrong with you and that is called very bad taste in videogames. You don't even know the basics of a good videogame like good game design and fun gameplay. Poor noob, I feel sorry for you.

@Litchie There's nothing wrong with hating Wind Waker- any game with that combination of boredom and eyestrain/migraine inducing visuals deserves to ba hated.

@slainta No, it's a remake. A remaster is the original graphics remastered in HD. Nintendo is putting more money in to it, updating textures and adding a unique experience to the game. There is stuff Nintendo hasnt said a single word about, expect more at E3

@franzito Have to agree on the sailing part for WW, it made me like Phantom Hourglass better because of it.

@xoKevKev They've already stated that an original Zelda title is in the works for the 3DS.  The next Zelda 3DS will NOT be a remake:

"It's something I'm asked about often and I assure you that it is something I've spoken to Miyamoto about," he said. "But recently we released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake. We are considering the idea, but it didn't seem right to launch a remake one after another, so the next Zelda game on 3DS will be original."--Aonuma http://www.1up.com/news/original-zelda-3ds-game-in-development

amk11
amk11

@Ultima_Dragoon No we dont, actually people fall for it every year with Call of Duty and other yearly IPs. Nintendo at least takes the time and money to make their games good, unlike everyone else who wanted to make a quick buck. The WW remake is only to hold us over until the new Zelda comes. Nintendo has always been about it's fan, it's not trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator like everyone else does. It's trying to make everyone happy
