Nintendo talks Zelda Wii U

Company president Satoru Iwata says new 3D Zelda, Mario games in development for HD console, acknowledges that first-party games alone "can't be enough."

by

Nintendo has teased that new fully 3D Zelda and Mario games are in development for the Wii U. Speaking to IGN, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said these titles will be announced at a later date.

"We will announce the launch schedules for new 3D Zelda and Mario games in the future, but this is not the right opportunity for me to indicate when we will make such announcements," Iwata said.

Though new Zelda and Mario games for the Wii U may be appealing enough for some gamers to pick up a system, strong first-party support will not be enough if the Wii U is to thrive, Iwata said.

"Our first-party software alone can't be enough to appeal to the different tastes of all game fans," he said. "The decision of Nintendo that it will publish the two software titles from Platinum Games is one answer to this challenge."

Platinum Games is developing The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 (a system exclusive) for the Wii U.

In September, a source reportedly with knowledge of the matter said Nintendo was developing a new Wii U Zelda game for 2014. The game is said to be the most expensive project in Nintendo's history and will run on a new game engine that will allow for the "most advanced visual features Nintendo has ever made."

The most recent Zelda game was 2011's Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which launched for the Wii to a strong critical reception.

It's amazing how slow the interface and update process is on this device. It reminds me of the PS3 launch. It shouldn't take 10-15 seconds to switch between the browser and the dashboard.

I'm waiting for games like this and a price drop before I consider getting a Wii U. Sorry Nintendo, I only like your consoles for their 1st-party games. Definitely looking forward to seeing what you can come up with when you have hardware that can actually output a high resolution.

Would it be crazy to ask for a reboot of the Original Legend of Zelda?  By reboot, I am talking about Next Gen Graphics interface etc, but with the Original Quest.

Curious if I am just being "nostalgic"

I just finished Skyward Sword. That game is beyond amazing and it truly is an amazing origin story. Can't wait for the historia next month!

Would love to see a Wind Waker re-release for WiiU.  Tingle tuner on the controller screen. Hell, I'd get a WiiU just to replay that game. Add WiiMotionPlus support to items! HARD MODE?! SUPER HARD MODE?!?!?!? That one's free Nintendo. :)

I'll take whatever Nintendo has to offer. The good usual outweighs the bad.

If Nintendo want third party devs to really do well then they should think about letting them use (licence) the engine that they are developing for this new Zelda, maybe?

nintendo would have had a much stronger Wii U launch and more people would have been likely to adopt the system if a strong title like zelda were to launch on the system. but here are two reasons why its good the system didn't launch with zelda. number 1...... Zelda is my favorite nintendo franchise, and if it was a launch title their is always that chance that they would rush it to make the dead line of the systems launch. number 2..... waiting awhile while the system gets feedback and updates and the system gets more secure. nintendo will be able to code the game to be more reliable and take full advantage of those HD graphics and the Wii U gamepad. im hoping that they stick close to the twilight princess graphics, but in HD with more detail. exactly like the E3 demo. i would buy that game 10X's over.

Well if you ask me what can never be enough is the same old head-in-the-sand single player and other-than-co-op action, as Bethesda should have learned and the Zelda universe can certainly implement. This is the age of connectivity, let's stop move in the direction of enlightenment, this is getting embarrassing.

You know what would really be good for Nintendo? If they finally got a new IP

I particularly like the way Zelda wears the green outfit.

The last great Zelda for me was Wind Waker. Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword looked like a mash up from Zelda's past...

Imagine a Zelda with Assassin's Creed quality visuals. That would actually get me excited about the franchise again. Oh and please give it some semblance of difficulty. These last two outings were unbelievably easy.

Nintendo is moving back in the right direction. I had an N64, loved it, and skipped the Gamecube and Wii. It seems like Nintendo is pursuing a more hardcore strategy as with the N64. The system will be 250 dollars by the time the lineup gets really good and I will (shockingly) be tempted. Of course I'm still buying either the next Xbox or Playstation because they will undoubtedly be mind-blowing.

Enough of Zelda (Though I still look forward to it). I want to bring back the old IP's back. Give me Star Fox, Metroid, and F-Zero. I miss those games.

As far as 3rd-party support goes, I don't think the other next-gen consoles are going to eliminate it from the Wii U completely. There are a few that will see possibilities on the Wii U that can't be done on other consoles. If they have smarts, they will take the chance.

Sooo....whats going to happen in 2 years when next gen consoles come out, and are so far ahead in technology compared to WiiU that no third party will give them support?

I fail to see how Nintendo or fanboys cant see this

@Blitzkrieg129

 I agree in a way but i wouldnt spend 400-500$$ just for 2 games , MArio and Zelda main titles. Thats toooo much . A rent will do the trick for me, way cheaper.

skayj2
skayj2

@Blitzkrieg129 I'm the same as you. I don't care much for the 3rd parties, that's why I have my Xbox360. I buy Nintendo consoles for their solid first party releases.

That's why I was annoyed when they decided to release a bunch of 3rd party games that had already been released... Lol...

Anyway, with that being said, I can't wait for HD Metroid, Zelda and Mario games. I would also love to see an HD F-Zero game, but I dno if that will happen though :/

 @Boat3600 Huge fail for Gamespot. (Did they ever realise it was most likely their sensitivity settings?) They should've linked to IGNs.

leeko_link

 @Klikandclick Well it doesn't seem like they don't have one every gen. They do have a lot of studios working on some, this gen we did see some great original IPs from them like Trace Memory, Pushmo, Sakura Samurai, and Xenoblade Chronicles (which was originally suppose to be titled Monado).

 @franzito

 Well seeing as Twilight Princess is one one Zelda Timeline, and SS was the first LoZ, it makes sense to have similarities with Zelda. But I agree they could use some shaking up of things. But you know Zelda FANatics would freak if they deviated too much from the standard story

dawnofhero
dawnofhero

 @OHGFawx I thought Twilight Princess had the series going in the right direction, at least with the art style. But I agree, AC visuals in a Zelda game would be epic beyond belief. Heck, even if Nintendo went with the style they had in the Wii U demo would be great.

 @okassar

 I agree. I fully expect Nintendo to have a great library of games on the WiiU by the time the next Xbox/PS4 arrive. A price drop and a killer title would bring a bit of steam away from Microsoft and Sony. But if their systems are as powerful as the fanboys claim (still waiting on actual proof) then of course there would be a price tag in line with it as well. I for one, am not looking forward to another $600+tax day one console. I will skip that party regardless of how pretty the games look

 @Rivboets7 Shouldn't it be better?

 @nick280455 Lol the last one came out late 2011. I think 2014 is reasonable. COnsidering the gap between TP and SS was just 5 years :P

 @zpluffy My hope is that the next Zelda is on par with OOT or better. Anyone who says any Zelda game released thusfar is better than OOT is a liar.

I would agree with you, but Nintendo's last Gen console sales figures were fantastic.  Oh and PS1 would also like to say hello.

All that so called great tech cost money.  How much will these so called next gen monsters be?  Will sony be willing to try to lose its shirt again in the beginning like they did with the PS3.  M$ to a lesser extent.

Going for big tech really took that PS2 wind out of the PS3 sail.

In console history its been proven again and again its not just about raw ballz.

I think its safe to say so far that we are going to be in for a treat on the Nintendo side of things which I find very refreshing this gen.

Maybe because it's not going to happen and if it does, more power to Nintendo for having the one and only affordable console for both consumers and developers.

And again with the "3rd parties won't give the Wii U any support when the next gen Playstation/XBox arrive" because developers are shallow idiots who'll abandon a console with a user base of probably around 15m just because shiny new consoles are out. Remember the PS2? How it was only half the power of the Gamecube and only a third the power of the XBox, how did that 3rd party support go?

But I'll humor you anyways, let's say this is true, and that the next gen Playstation/XBox do come out and are incredibly more powerful, know what's going to happen? Most likely only the biggest 3rd parites will develop for those systems since they can afford to fun games that will easily cost around $100m. How about the smaller developers, especially Indie? They're going to stay with Nintendo.

 @grove12345 I bought my Wii U with one intention. To play exclusive Wii U games.

So, that means my Wii U is going to be exactly like my N64, Gamecube, and Wii. Were those great machines? Well, that's a matter of opinion, but millions bought them so that should suffice for them.

Did I buy my Wii U's (I bought two) so I could play the latest multiplats? Hell no. I got Four PCs, two 360s, and three PS3s for that.

abHS4L88

 @Todoruk  @okassar

Reggie did state that they won't reveal the true power of the Wii U until those consoles come out so that's bound to make things interesting.

NightFox313

 @okassar  I agree. A few Legend of Zelda titles have come close to Ocarina of Time, such as Wind Waker, but none of them have really surpassed OOT's greatness.

And honestly, I don't think they ever will. Times have changed and video game standards have differed, and Ocarina of Time was so far ahead of its time that any modern game nowadays wouldn't be able to captivate the spirit and innovation that it had, but the Zelda series still has potential.

 @SolidTy  @grove12345 You must host some killer LAN parties with four PCs. Even with an MMO, you could just have three buddies come over so you don't even need headsets.

I'll never lose my love for local multiplayer. Good times.

 @chipwithdip

It's basically whatever games was developed under their 1st party studios. and even 2nd party because if 2nd party games can't be considered IPs of Sony then we have to apply that to Nintendo because games like Pokemon, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Advanced War, and Pushmo are all 2nd party games (I know there's more).

chipwithdip
chipwithdip

 @Klikandclick  @leeko_link What IPs for PS and Xbox are from Sony and Microsoft themselves. They have exclusives, but they come from dudes that can totally just take their IP rights and skedaddle whenever they want. Nintendo has the most and most varied 1st party IPs under its belt to date. They just don't use 'em all.

NEW F-ZERO PLEASE.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @Klikandclick  @leeko_link

Pushmo - Intelligent Studios, Nintendo 2nd party

Xenoblade Chronicales - Monolithsoft, Nintendo 1st party

Another Code: Trace Memory - Cing, Nintendo 2nd party (defunct T_T)

Sakurai Samurai was just published.

There's also The Little King's Story (although it's now owned by Konami), Brain Age, Nintendogs, The Wii series. GameFreak is currently working on Rhythm Hunter for the 3DS.

Also considering that compared to the other two, Nintendo tends to get the most demand for their franchises, which pretty much are Super Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Smash Brothers, MarioKart, Pokemon, Pikmin, and Paper Mario, there are also ongoing or revived franchises like Advance Wars, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus, Star Fox, Rhythm Heaven, and hopefully F-Zero.

Also Miyamoto's working on a brand new IP so that's something to look forward to.
