What the Closure of BioShock Developer Irrational Games Means

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

No gods or kings.

It's the twist that none of us saw coming. After basking in critical and commercial success for nearly two decades, Irrational Games days are now winding down. Ken Levine, one of the three men who founded the studio, announced that he would be forming a new team with a select number of people from Irrational, and the rights of the BioShock franchise would go to Take-Two Interactive. Not only have many talented creators lost their jobs, but the closure impacts the industry at large, in both good and bad ways.

Bad News: One Less Artistically Minded Developer

Columbia would have been a lousy vacation destination.
Columbia would have been a lousy vacation destination.

Irrational Games was one of the few large development studios whose emphasis was on creating challenging artistic experiences. The conversations about BioShock Infinite were markedly different from how most games are analyzed. We wrestled with the dialogue of Elizabeth, the actions of Booker, and the depiction of this dystopian society as we strove to articulate why we had such a strong emotional reaction to this provocative adventure. That my feelings were more negative than others doesn't change how I felt about Irrational Games. Levine's team incited such passion because it wasn't scared of tackling difficult topics, and such a design philosophy stands out amid a sea of homogenization.

With Irrational Games no longer around, the big-budget space has become a lot less interesting than it was yesterday. There are still studios such as Naughty Dog that make us confront our own beliefs in ways that are often uncomfortable, but such endeavors are few and far between. Thankfully, for those who want emotionally difficult experiences, there are still plenty of independent games that fit that model. But one less AAA team working on subversive games lessens the visibility of this industry's cultural importance to the world at large.

Good News: Vision Without Restraint

You wouldn't want to win a prize at Rapture's carnival.
You wouldn't want to win a prize at Rapture's carnival.

Ken Levine is an auteur whose expertise is examining the fall of dystopian societies. I cherished having someone with such lofty artistic ambitions in the AAA scene, and can only wonder how demanding expectations could curb one's creative output. It's no secret that the most high-profile games often come with inflated budgets, and those who are opening their pocketbooks certainly want ample return on their investments. Even someone who wants nothing more than to push us to think differently about the world we inhabit still has to find a way to make the average person interested in such a game. And that's why I believe Levine's departure could be good for his upcoming projects.

I have no idea how closely the finished versions of BioShock and Infinite mirror Levine's original vision, and trying to guess their potential metamorphosis is futile. But I do believe Levine will have less pressure to appeal to as many people as possible with whatever he's working on next. And if Levine is freer to realize his dreams, that could only be a good thing for those who want to see what ideas he has stirring in his head.

Bad News: Another Strike Against AAA

AAA games were very different when System Shock 2 came out.
AAA games were very different when System Shock 2 came out.

In Ken Levine's official statement, he made no references to financial difficulties facing Irrational Games. And if we look at the sales numbers for Infinite, it would be hard to imagine that he was forced to abandon the studio he founded because it was no longer solvent. By all accounts, Irrational Games was successful, which is one of the reasons the news that hit today was so stunning. After all, no one could have predicted its closure even one week ago. Why would a development studio suddenly close its doors after receiving so much praise and commercial success over the last year?

This is where the bad news comes in. I believe that the AAA space is so stifling, so demanding, and so merciless that even the biggest studios have to reevaluate their immediate plans. Considering how expensive games are to make, and how long development cycles are, one flop could mean the end of a once-proud studio. That's a terrifying business model, and one that I do not think is sustainable for the long-term health of the industry. And that's why you'll see many more studios follow Irrational Games' path as the financial pressures become too great. For those who love big-budget games, this is very sad news indeed, as our options will dwindle with each passing year.

Good News: Publishers Adopt a New Philosophy

Child of Light could set the template that other publishers rush to emulate.
Child of Light could set the template that other publishers rush to emulate.

But there are plenty of games that exist outside of the AAA space, and they are only going to grow stronger and more influential. What's so important about Levine's decision is where his future employment lies. Even though Irrational Games is being dissolved, Levine's new studio will still be owned by Take-Two Interactive. The biggest publishers aren't going to fade into irrelevance even if the biggest games lose their stronghold on the industry, and we're seeing that transition in this situation. Take-Two is still funding Levine's projects, which means both the artistic and business sides are being helped by this relationship.

Having smaller, cheaper games pad out a publisher's catalog is a wise business venture. We're seeing Ubisoft do this with Child of Light and Sony with modest projects such as Rain. Diversifying your interests is the key toward long-term success, and the redistribution of money could be great for every person who loves this industry. As players, we'll get a wider variety of games, creators will have more flexibility, and publishers will lessen their risks. I expect more developers to take this route, and more publishers to sign contracts with them that are beneficial to everyone rather than let them be completely independent.

I feel like people being way too harsh on Infinite could have had some SMALL factor in this outcome tbh. People talk about Infinite as if it were some middle tier piece of trash - it certainly isn't. It suffered from constant development changes and removed features some were expecting - but most the complainer were bandwagoning in my opinion.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I liked Bioshock Infinite, my only issue with it was that I was unable to really drawn in by the environment of Columbia and this was in stark contrast to Rapture in Bioshock 1 and 2.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Don't get me wrong - I get it had flaws and am fine with people liking the previous games more - but the majority of talk online consistently uses words like "trash" (as can be found throughout the comments of this article alone!) when I'd say it's definitely a top tier game with many great aspects. Yet the community has snowballed into only talking the negative in one big bandwagon giving the game a far worse name for itself than it deserves. And I have a feeling some of the folks at 2K/Irrational would have read these complaints and probably took it more to heart than the great praise the game got from critics. It's a sad aspect of the gaming/online community IMO. :/

Bioshock 1. One of the greatest video gaming experiences of all time for me, personally. I'll never forget going thru Rapture. RIP irrational games. Although I'm sure a few of the former employees will form an awesome new independent studio.

It will be a good game no doubt, but it will be a very different game from the likes of Bioshock from limited funding but more creative control.

I actually agree with his review of Infinite. It was not a very good game overall and did not deserve much of the praise it got.

they didn't deserve to get closed down,

but the shit was starting to stink,

bioshock infinite was trash,

that's what they get from veering from the promised,

"your choices affect the game"

and ripping people off with the season pass.

I fail to see how the Bioshock Infinite Season Pass was ripping off anybody. Of the ones I've seen, it was the best deal - $20 for all the content that would cost $40 individually. So how is it wrong to offer a bulk deal of DLC for half price?

Since most well known developers are owned by big publishers now, I see value in this kind of restructuring. I hope future BioShock games will explore other themes while Levine gets the resources he needs, AAA or not, for his next project, which really doesn't need to be another BioShock game exploring the same themes as the first three.

I hope all publishers adopt a more flexible team model so that studios aren't completely broken up and laid off wholesale during restructuring. Job security goes a long way to encourage new talents to go into game development and stay.

Its a sad day for gaming. But if a game on that scale is a flop then publishers are out millions, if not hundreds of millions. Just like how Tomb Raider took well over a year and being put on every platform in order to make a profit it shows that this business model is not a long term one. Hopefully his smaller team will be able to pull off a game that shows off his vision without the giant budget and pressure from the publishers.

Are you implying that McShea is a Nintendo-hater? I disagree.

Rather, he's the kind of Nintendo fan that would rather prefer that Nintendo goes back to its root - in other words, he's the old-school die-hard sort that would say the phrase "good ol' days" given half a f*cking chance.

One of the saddest parts of this whole thing is that 2K is getting the rights to Bioshock. That can only spell disaster for the series. Inevitably, we'll see another Bioshock game, this time without Levine overseeing it (like Bioshock 2). Even though it seems like a bad situation, perhaps with a smaller team and a smaller budget Ken Levine will be able to make a came that caters to his strengths, without the pressures of a big-time publisher's demands.

You might want to take it as an opinion from a person that thinks that presentation and story-writing are just as important as the gameplay, if not more - Tom McShea is such a person.

Heck, if you can accept such opinions, it would be easier to be not unsettled when some people say that games like Braid and Journey are "self-indulgent" things, to cite some of the linguistic bombast that these people utter.

Found it hard to believe he could really think Infinite was worth a 4, but whatever.

By the time the first Bioshock had come along, it had been a long time since I'd enjoyed a single player FPS that much, it really was refreshing. Bioshock 2 not so much, and Infinite, slightly less than 1, but still great.

I never actually finished System Shock 2. It was my first runthrough and I'd set it to the hardest setting and I was crawling through it being as conservative as I could, then something happened to the PC and I lost everything on it, including the save game. I don't have the will power to go back through it again. It's going to haunt me for a while, that one. Real shame the studio has to close, but like Tom said, it's because AAA is changing. It's turning into an absolute monster than hardly anyone will be able to handle in a few years.

It's not as bad as it seems. Smart people (most them I believe) will take advantage of this situation by getting a better job. The times I've seen my salary increase by large margins were caused by getting a new job after being laid off or by jumping positions. I should mention that the places I got laid off were really not at the pinnacle of their success.

But it gets even better from here: Bioshock turned out to be a hugely successful franchise that brought fame and fortune to Irrational Games. Now the news is out everywhere in the media. Awesome workforce has been released on the job market. Their worth has been proven. LinkedIn and headhunters are things that exist. If they can't find a job, a job will find them.

losing ones job in a volatile industry is to be expected, more worrisome is the mindset that we need to be slavish to developers instead of the other way around
