Tomb Raider for PS4, Xbox One sales are "favorable"

But Square Enix doesn't provide a specific sales figure; full-year revenue and profit expectations raised.

Ahead of its annual sales report next week, Square Enix announced today that it has raised its financial targets, thanks in part to "favorable" sales of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The company previously expected to net ¥3.5 billion ($34.4 million) in profit for the year, but now it forecasts net income to come in at a much healthier ¥6.6 billion ($64.8 million). Square Enix also raised overall sales expectations from ¥140 billion - ¥150 billion ($1.4 billion - $1.47 billion) to ¥155 billion ($1.5 billion).

What's giving Square Enix confidence that it will perform substantially better than expected? The company said Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn sales were "strong," while smartphone game Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light made an "encouraging start."

On top of that, Square Enix pointed out that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition each recorded "favorable sales." In addition, the publisher said it enacted "cost reduction efforts" across the entire company. Finally, Square Enix said its improved sales and profit forecast is attributable to foreign exchange gains from the weaker yen.

Lucky Square Enix. They earn moneh just by making something more eye-candy.

"encouraging start.", "favorable sales."

those two quotes sound to me like sales expectations haven't been met.

I beat it on 360, got it free with ps plus which is making it a hard buy for next gen. I'll wait until it's really cheap to see the difference. I'm looking forward to a sequel which will be a day one buy.

I played this on the PS3 (free with the PS Plus subscription) and am enjoying it for a second time on the PS4.  Even though it looks great on the PS4, I can only imagine what a game developed specifically for the new generation systems will look like.  Tomb Raider and Uncharted will be spectacular on PS4!

Setting the bar too damn high.

It's good that the extra sales help secure TR for a sequel.

Will they ever announce FFXV ???
btw, a next Tomb Raider will also be worth looking out for.

This game surprised me and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

voice acting in the game was good some times and other times awful

I went back a few weeks ago to beat it on hard (even though there's no trophy for it), and then found all of the somewhat hidden collectibles to finish that up. While I initially liked it just fine my first time through, on my second, it was slightly better. In terms of third person shooting gameplay, I like the way Lara automatically gets cover, and the way she leans as you're behind it, but I actually felt that they could have made it so that was a manual crouch, because it kind of tarnishes the intensity if you know when all the guys are done with just by seeing her animations change.

I feel like the game has great third person gameplay, whether that be the way you traverse, or shoot (though enemy death animations could have been a bit more reactionary depending on where they're hit), but I also felt like it would benefit from being in a better game. As I went through it, I imagined what if the type of maneuverability; camera view and what have you was in a game like RE4, with its variety of locations, as well as boss fights, and how you fight them; I think that'd be amazing.

The story and characters could have been a whole lot better too. The sound was really good, aside from nearly all voice acting. I think Lara was voiced well enough, but all of it could have been better. Visually, well it just looks great so little complaints there.

It was  fun play through on my PS4 as I never cared for the series to begin with but heard so much about it I gave it ago. Beyond the horrid voice acting, it was a visual joy on my PS4 and fun. Doubt i'll play it again as the Multiplayer is beyond stupid so I traded it in for credit.

I actually got this game through Gamefly to play through again on my Xbox One. I forget how great this game is. I hope a sequel is announced at E3.

I hope to see Tomb Raider 2 soon. The reboot was good but it can definitely be improved

It's nice to see this great game also giving favorable sales. Remeber how this game came at the center of the debate "AAA game business model is falling under it's own weight"?

It should have been called Island Raider. ;) No proper tombs at all in the game.

Why are people moaning? It makes sense to release games that were released last year on these new consoles, they'd be stupid not to. In fact they probably had this planned, you don't release a game the same year the consoles are coming and not plan for it.

I think it is great, lots of people I know decided to not buy any more PS3/360 games and wait until they can play them on PS4, I did the same with The Last of Us and GTA V.... when they come I'll be purchasing them both.

lonesamurai1

That's only because there isn't much else to choose from on these new consoles.

I probably would have bought this, but they offered the non "definitive" edition on PS+

Thank you!

Well; I'm glad to hear it made them some money, I know initially they claimed it didn't meet expectations on the other consoles.  As long as they didn't spend too much to bring this to Ps4/One, I can see how this would be just pur profit.  I purchased the title again on Ps4 and it plays fantastically.  I hope to hear about a sequel at E3.

Can't believe people ran out and bought Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for a 2nd time at full price. Waste of money.

They're doing great, Hitman Absolution made a great profit, Tomb Raider to and now the remake is doing well? Congrats Square!

Now release FFX/X-2 for the Microsoft plattforms and you have a winner.

@tableofjapan

Nobody? Is that your expect opinion. I'm buying The Last Of Us again. I'm buying GTAV again. I would buy Skyrim again as well to play it properly if they ever did a remaster. There are a lot like me. That makes you look a bit naive and self opinionated doesn't it.

@major_retard
i guess that makes me one of the minority who thought this game wasnt all that great. for me it was just climbing and headshotting people with arrows. some of the puzzles took like 2 minutes to solve which was irritating. especially the DLC Tomb.

I explored a lot of tombs and catacombs. We must have played a different game.

@blackace  I didn't play the original as I had initially intended to. I like Tomb Raider, but perhaps not enough to have wanted to get the PS4 version if I had played the last-gen versions, but it all depends on what game it is. I'll totally be getting The Last of Us again, even though I've played about 60 hours in all of the PS3 version, including the Left Behind DLC which I beat twice.

EdAl2112
EdAl2112

@blackace I can't believe people watched Star Wars in the 80's, bought the VHS collection then bought the DVD collection, the went to the theaters again to watch them, then the bluray collection then watched the 3d version. I can't believe people like stuff.

shinrae5
shinrae5

That's why I didn't, I bought the game when it came out and loved it. But there was no reason to pay 60 for the same game a second time.

For those who never played it, I don't blame them for getting the best version though.

santinegrete
santinegrete

@blackace not that kind of waste if the game is good. But did they really charge 60 bucks for the def edition? Price is still steep for a remaster, I give you that.

@sladakrobot  I doubt it. most jrpgs were later ported to the ps3 and others simply never came out for the microsoft platforms due to those console owners not being jrpg gamers FOR THE MOST PART

@sladakrobot Square Executive during an interview last year: "Either buy a PS3 or Deal with it."

@sladakrobot That won't happen, because it was made specifically on the PS2 at the time. Not really a big deal to me since I own a PS2 & PS3.

@Dark-Exsphere @major_retard

Yes you are in the majority. It was a great game and exactly what TR fans wanted. I really enjoyed it but would like to see more of an open world to explore in the next one with a lot more tombs like Skyrim. TR DE on PS4 was a great place to start. It was the best looking graphics I've ever seen in a game. The future looks bright. TR is back on course after being derailed by Uncharted which showed them the way forward.
