This guy proposed using a Skyrim item; she said yes

"Best. Proposal. Ever."

Recently we got to see a World of Warcraft-themed wedding, and now comes another romantic story where fantasy became reality. In Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the enchanted "Amulet of Mara" is used to unlock various romantic dialogues, one of which is the option to wed other characters.

That's how it works in the game, and that's how it happened in real life for one couple.

"I introduced [my fiance] to Skyrim--and he enjoys every minute of the game," Sarah Briody told Kotaku. "I love watching him play because we both have very different game styles. We do play other multiplayer games together when we have the opportunity."

Briody recalled that when her partner proposed to her using the Amulet of Mara, she did not initially understand what was happening.

"He gave me the amulet and while I recognized what it was--it didn't really click as to WHAT it was," Briody said. "I put it on and he started to smile from ear to ear. Then he said: 'Is that an Amulet of Mara? I'm surprised someone like you isn't spoken for.'"

"Then it finally registered that he was proposing! He got down on one knee and slipped the ring on my finger."

Briody said yes, and would later post an image of the amulet and the ring on Reddit. "Best. Proposal. Ever.," she wrote.

In February, role-playing game studio BioWare recalled how two Mass Effect 3 players met, fell in love, and were eventually married. You can read that story here.

Ok? I have a friend who proposed to his now wife with a pokeball with ring inside. Used the "I choose you" line and everything. They also met through Star Wars Republic Commando multiplayer. Do I get an article?

Now they've got to go talk to the priest and then stand outside the chapel in Riften and fast forward the clock 24 hours.

I'm sure your grandchildren will be so proud of you when you tell them how you met their grandfather. Then again, they might not.

Will she take an arrow between her knee, though?

Wish them a happy life, anyway.

I bet he married her only to come home every 10 days asking her to cook for him and share the cozy little profit she has made with her shop.

The most amazing thing about this story is that SHE introduced HIM to the game.

@DarkSaber2k

You are getting your disdain of Eddie Makuch do too much of your talking, if you are dissing on two fellow gamers' betrothal.

Also, really? Wishing fiery death on others? That is a new low for you.

I suppose that people who have yet to realize that wishful thinking does nothing would stoop to such a level sooner or later.

All this makes me wonder if women REALLY play games other than silly Browser based Zynga games or something similar. I've been playing games since 15+ years, and I have hardly come across women playing video games, except for a cousin who used to play Sims games (she eventually lost interest in that too)  and a female friend who is a fan of the Half-Life series, and plays ONLY games of that series.

@horosavinXX You would not have the guts to even do something like that if the time ever came.

@endorbr  They better download 1.2 update cause the dead wedding guest glitch sucks.

@jimmy_russell  Why does it matter? The only difference is diamond or metal. And the diamond thing is a business felony inserted into our culture by diamond companies.

@Soul_666 Yeah, I had to read that twice going "OMG, she made him start to play Skyrim, not the other way around!". I'm not even sarcastic saying that (well, a little perhaps). I love it when prejudices get smashed.

@GrayF0X786 He/she better not Fus Ro Dah the other off a cliff, like I've seen people do with Lydia in youtube videos. That's illegal and she might get caught. I read one story about a woman who didn't want to stay married, so she pushed her husband down a cliff when they were sightseeing together.

@funkyzoom There are several reasons for that, the first is that if you don't expect women to play games you won't notice them doing so. One other is that people playing games don't go out of their way to play someone who is just like them and that they don't think their gender is relevant to discuss or reveal when playing. One other is that women are harassed by other (male) players whenever they reveal themselves as women. You've probably heard these before and there are tons of other reasons of course.

Lambchopzin

@funkyzoom I'm having a hard time understanding why this article in particular made you wonder that. Isn't something like Skyrim the very antithesis of silly browser games?

LightRukia
LightRukia

@funkyzoom  It's stupid to think every woman who play games isn't a hardcore gamer just like it's stupid to act like every male who plays is a hardcore gamer or good at games.

I've been playing games since I was 5 and had bigger collection than all the boys in my school and always kicked their butts when we played together. Here's my ps3 and ps2 collection (not counting my wii, ds, 3ds,360, ps1, and pc games).

@Hurvl

All your points are valid, but if you consider the fact that I'm leaning more towards single-player games, then these points aren't always valid. Counter-Strike (Source and Global Offensive) is(are) the only online game I play (planning to buy TitanFall soon), so whatever i mentioned was mainly about single-player. Anyway, my apologies because earlier I didn't specifically mention that I was referring to single-player games.

@Lambchopzin

Its not just "this" article, I wonder the same thing whenever there is an article about females gamers.

funkyzoom
funkyzoom

@Evamorgana

Yeah, you do exist, but women are so outrageously outnumbered by men in the gaming world that the number of female gamers is almost negligible.

funkyzoom
funkyzoom

@LightRukia

Wow, terrific collection! Anyway,  I just said that I wonder if female gamers exist, but I never denied their existence. But I'm sure you'll agree that the number of male gamers outnumber female gamers by an insane margin.
