The Witcher 3 dev comments on 900p/720p PS4, Xbox One resolution speculation -- "It's just a rumor"

CD Projekt Red says "as soon as we will be ready to announce Spec we will let you know."

A recent report from a Russian gaming website claimed that the PlayStation 4 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt runs at 900p/30fps, while the Xbox One version will run in 720p/30fps.

We followed up with developer CD Projekt Red about this speculation and were told that an official announcement regarding the game's console resolution and frame-rate will come at a later date.

"It's just a rumor and we are not commenting [on] rumors," CD Projekt Red's PR & Marketing representative Michael Platkow-Gilewski said. "As soon as we will be ready to announce Spec we will let you know."

The report also claimed that The Witcher 3 is a "very demanding title" and a single GTX 780Ti struggles to run it for PC. The site goes on to say that the "PC version runs currently with all its bells and whistles enabled (plus 8xMSAA) with 35-45fps on a GTX 780Ti at 1080p."

Previously, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is "fairly close" to maxing out the power of the Xbox One and PS4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was originally expected to launch later this year, but CD Projekt Red recently delayed the game to a release in February 2015.

With games like The Witcher, designed first and foremost for the customization available on PC, knowing the resolution it will be running at on consoles isn't meaningful without knowing the level the effects will be set too.

The first two games had massive optimisation issues. Cd projekt seems to suck like that.

It really bugs me when I hear that a game takes stupidly powerful cards to run them. 780ti is several times the power of a PS4. There is just so much waste with PC hardware because you will never see what it could truly do. If the devs were able to access the 780ti more directly with low level code, The Witcher 3 would max out 60fps 1440p. This is why the underpowered PS4 will perform far better than a PC of the same spec because it's coded to fully utilize the hardware (Well some games are anyway).

This game is going to suck because, y'know, it's not in 1080p.  Gaming can never be fun at any lower resolution than that.

After all the hype, I decided to give this game a try. I'm about 3 hours into the first one. . I'm struggling to like it, the combat system is boring and the voice acting makes Resident Evil look like an Oscar winner. I kid, the voice acting is not that bad, but it's not that good either.

I'm really getting tired of all this spec baiting. The resolution really doesn't matter that much and, yes, I own a PS4.

I think witcher 3 will be in 1080p on PS4 and it will only  be in 900p  on xbox one.

Wouldn't play this on a console if you paid me to. PC FTW.

Time for all the homophobes to come out of the woodwork and complain about how they don't want gays being "shoved down their throat."

A single GTX 780 struggles to play this maxed out at 1080p? Dude, how the freak is anyone going to be able to max it out and get a stable 60FPS then!? Apparently it's impossible.

People who say that they won't be able to run this on PC just because they don't have a 780Ti are wrong. You won't be able to run with 8xMSAA and all the other bells and whistles (including the dreaded Ubersampling). As for me, I shall turn down the AA and Ubersampling and enjoy the game at a still beautiful setting (hopefully I will get my 780Ti soon >.>)

I think they will drop the resolution on the PS4 to make the xboners feel good.

maybe it will run at 1080p on ps4 but x1 has no chance. i highly doubt ps4 will run at 1080p but who knows?

@skinymike They don't suck at optimization. Their games just look stupidly good.

@ahpuck  Yeah, the original was a diamond in the rough.  Has a great atmosphere and pretty good story with some nice moral dilemas, but the gameplay isn't anything to write home about.  And the voice acting got updated at some point, would assume any copy you can find now would be the director's cut, but the original VO and translations were laughable at times.

Oh, and some of the quests are really archaic, eventually had to rely on a walkthrough to finish the game.

@DutchZombie Gamespot is the worse offender. I don't think they have article titles anymore that don't contain a resolution in it.

@sammoth but the games recommended settings are getting more and more ridiculous, to get full HD on ultra you need to have quite a powerfull machine.

@Xmus942 If they switch off or lower MSAA from 8X then I'm sure they'd get 60fps

BuBsay

@Xmus942 From the sounds of it it's going to be the same as when Crysis 1 came out and every single GPU cried out in fear at trying to run it.

@Aleksanian  Would like to see what Nvidia does with the Maxwell stuff on their higher tier cards.

@jasajames  Notch down the MSAA. You sacrifice a lot of power for little gain going from 4x to 8x. I hope to get stable 30fps with a GTX 770.

@jasajames

Of Course it will run it.
Will it run on max 1080p with all the bells and whistles?
No.

@badman_89  With my rig I may have to just buy some bells and whistles to play with whilst I watch The Witcher 3: The Wild Slide-Show.

@analgrin Hopefully with MSAA down a notch I'll get a stable 30fps with a GTX 770?

andmcq

@BuBsay @Xmus942  I don't know about that, it's not very good business sense to release a title that no hardware can run. By the time this game is released it would have been optimised a lot more and proper drivers will be out for it. Supersampling aside, I'm confident a 780Ti powered machine will happily run this titles @ 1080p at more than 30fps with relative ease.

jecomans
jecomans

@sammoth Well, we are talking about GPU's alone that cost almost as much as the whole console, so I'd hope so.

Shivatin

@Darkhol0w @Aleksanian  Why would you waste your money on a TitanZ when you can get SLI 780Ti's for even cheaper... will probably beat a TitanZ in terms of performance (granted TitanZ is still two cards in one). I would get a TitanZ if I ran a workstation and wanted to play games on it, otherwise I wouldn't spend my money on it.

Darkhol0w
Darkhol0w

@Shivatin @Darkhol0w@Aleksanian How can you say that 2 780ti's will beat a Titan Z? Have you seen it's specs? Even if you add GDDR5 between the two cards (which is not usually how you are supposed to compare them) they only reach 8GB out of the 12GB it has.

I was just speculating anyway, I have no idea what kind of gpu/rig you might need to run Witcher 3 at ultra with everything cranked up in 4k.

bigruss51
bigruss51

@Shivatin @Darkhol0w@Aleksanian I played the sli game before and I can tell you it's not worth it. A better video card will beat sli in performance. 2 cards don't double the performance.
