The New GameSpot FAQ

Hello, my friend. Stay awhile and listen...

by

After far too long, we've finally rebuilt GameSpot from the ground up. As you can imagine, a lot of things changed, and so we've put together this nifty FAQ to explain those changes and to (hopefully) answer most of the questions that you may have.

What's Changed

All of the things. All of them. (Original from Hyperbole and a Half)

Basically, everything changed in one way or another as we transitioned over to a totally rad new technical platform. That said, here's a shortlist of the biggest changes:

  • The entire site is now TOTALLY SWEET and fully responsive so it works on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices
  • Community members who write great blogs and reviews will have their contributions more prominently featured around the site
  • Popular games may have more than one review so we can share multiple perspectives
  • No more half-point review scores!
  • Community tools for writing reviews and blogs are the same ones that our editors use, and our tools are AWESOME
  • New weekly shows like GameSpot News to The Waiting Game are just the tip of the iceberg of goodness heading your way!

And that's just the start! Over the coming weeks and months, we'll be making tweaks and adjustments, rolling out entirely new features, and, of course, fixing bugs as they pop up.

What does the FAQ say? (Blame former GameSpotter Stanley Lin for this one).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you redesign GameSpot? I liked it just like it was!

GameSpot is now over 17 years old, and for most of that time we've been using the same technology and the same tools, which is CRAZY.

On the technical end, this means that it's been really hard to build new features or to even keep the existing ones going. It's also been really hard on our editors, who often have to spend more time getting an article or review published than it took them to write it.

So rather than putting a new coat of paint on the site, we decided to rebuild it entirely from the ground up with modern technology, which required a full redesign.

Why did you get rid of my favorite feature?

We've completely remade the entire site from scratch, which meant that we unfortunately had to make some hard decisions as to which features would be retained on the new GameSpot.

Ultimately, we decided to focus on the core features that the vast majority of you depend on so as to avoid having features on the site that weren't properly maintained or were totally busted as a result.

Why did the review score system change?

As times have changed, we felt that we no longer needed to be so granular with our review scores. With the old system, we had 20 different possible scores but only 10 score definitions, which led to some confusion. If an 8 is "great" and a 9 is "superb," what purpose does an 8.5 serve? To address this, we've decided to simplify and remove half-points all together.

Were GameSpot's old reviews converted to the new point scale? What about my old reviews?

No, our older reviews are remaining on the same point scale that they were originally scored on, as are yours.

Will my new reviews have to use the new point scale?

Yes, all reviews going forward will use the new point scale. In other words, no scores with half-points.

I think I found a bug. How can I report it?

Bummer! While we're doing our best to keep things bug-free, some will inevitably pop up for us to squash. If you happen to run across one, we would totes appreciate it if you posted about it in our bugs and feedback forum. Thanks!

What's happened to Unions?

Unfortunately, Unions were one of the features that we had to make the difficult decision to cut from the site.

Though we do not have Unions on the new GameSpot, we gave Union leaders the opportunity to have their Unions converted into standard forums. This process is underway, and until it is done, these former Unions will unfortunately be inaccessible.

If you are a Union leader that has not yet opted into converting your Union, it's not too late to fill out this form. You still have until October 11, 2013!

If I converted my Union, can I be made into a moderator?

In the coming weeks, we will be making an announcement about a process for accepting new moderator volunteers. Please check back later for more details!

What about my User Created Board?

As with Unions, User Created Boards have gone away. Unlike Unions, we did not allow UCBs to be converted into standard forums.

Were there any changes to forum signatures?

To avoid distracting signatures or forum posts that have longer signatures than the posts themselves, we have restricting sigs to a maximum of 500 characters and a single, non-animated image up to 600x125.

We also added an option so you can hide other people’s signatures while you browse the forums.

Wait, you banned animated GIFs?

No, that's not the case--we just eliminated animated GIFs from signatures because they can be so distracting. You'll still be able to post them in blogs and forums, and you'll still be able to use them for your avatar.

How is "GIF" pronounced anyway?

Well, it's sure not pronounced "JIFF," if that's what you thought. This means you, Steve Wilhite.

What happened to Fuse?

We've upgraded user profiles to include the key features found in Fuse, such as the user activity feed, to more tightly integrate it into the core GameSpot experience. As such, Fuse no longer exists.

What happened to my level and emblems?

In the short term, we have preserved everyone's level and emblems in the Emblems page of their profile, where they will be able to show them off for generations to come.

Longer term, we will be rolling out a brand new leveling system. New folks will start from scratch, but existing members who earned levels and emblems on the old GameSpot will receive a starting bonus, depending on those levels and emblems--think of it like carrying your Shepard over from Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3.

What happened to all of the game achievements in my profile?

Unfortunately, we are no longer--at least for now--supporting game achievement tracking. We will, however, be considering this for the future.

Were my forum posts/reviews/game lists/blogs/etc. carried over?

Yup! Your existing content was carried over to the new site, with only a couple exceptions:

  • As Unions and User Created Boards are no longer be supported, content created in either will not be migrated. Union board posts for those Unions that have been converted into standard forums, however, will be migrated
  • As mentioned above, we no longer support game achievement tracking, and so that data was not migrated

How will community contributions be highlighted on the new site?

For the new GameSpot, one of our goals is to make a much bigger deal out of all the great content that you all produce. To that end, we will feature the top community-contributed content on our key pages right alongside our own stuff!

We're also putting more control in your hands. For example, reviews that you mark as being helpful are more likely to bubble up and get them featured on the game page.

We'll have plenty more to announce in the coming weeks and months, so stay tuned for more!

Can I use words like "class?"

Yes! You will no longer have difficulty saying words like "class," or "style," or whatever. I can't believe that I just had to type that.

Will I still be able to download files or videos?

Over the years, file downloads such as demos, patches, mods, and map pack downloads have become less and less of a focus for us, in part due to platforms such as Steam which have made the necessity for these services largely irrelevant. As such, on the new GameSpot, we will not be offering file downloads at all.

This will also apply to videos as we shift to streaming-only video distribution. Again, this is both a reflection of usage stats and how the online world itself has changed as the result of the influence of YouTube, Netflix, and others. Plus, you have to admit that the proliferation of Wi-Fi and mobile web has made the need to download videos to watch them later sorta pointless.

I've still got an active Total Access subscription. What about my benefits?

First of all, thanks for your support and for being an awesome person!

If you've still got an active Total Access subscription, this means that it will run through January 31, 2014 at the latest. Right now, you're only really receiving two main benefits--no ads and HD video downloads--and we will carry over these over into the new site until your subscription expires.

Will there be a new Total Access subscription program?

We currently have no plans to roll out a new Total Access subscription program. That said, if there is enough community demand for one, and if we are able to create a new program that will provide a real, tangible value, it is something that we will consider.

Is there a dark theme?

Yes! While we will be defaulting to our lighter theme, there is a switch in the header that allows you to switch to dark, and your choice of theme will be saved via a cookie for the future.

Does GameSpot support Salty Bucks?

GameSpot does not condone gambling, even with fake money. I am not GameSpot, however, so as far as I'm concerned, you can fake bet all you like. Just remember to always bet on DBZ. Except for when you shouldn't.

Have you made changes to how you moderate comments, forum posts, etc.?

Yes! We have made changes to the GameSpot Community Code of Conduct to help clean up our forums and comment sections. See all the details.

i love the new site design, but i am sad because i cannot see all my ratings in one place.

now, i need to search for the game to see the rating i gave it; and as i have this account for a long time, i cannot remember all the games i have rated. it is sad because i know i have played some good games (i have rated them high as well), but i cannot remember their names.

could you please synchronise so i could have all my rated games in one stack?

i know that i am not the only one that has this problem. :)

The firs- da fuq?! My Pikachu avatar is gone after my first time logging into this site after the redsign!? Ugh!

Anyways. The first time I came to this site after the redesign, I was on my phone and I thought my phone had taken me to the mobile version of this site because it seemed so watered down and empty.

Thats after I thought I must be in the wrong place because gamespot is unrecognizable now.

Then I realized no......this IS the site and this IS the desktop version and this IS suck.

My whole identity is GONE. Where is my profile? Where are my friends? Are they even still here? Where are their blogs?

I feel like I'm on the PlayStation Network. Cold and all alone.

I have no reason to use this site as a community now. I will watch their Video reviews on Youtube.

For Gamespot thought it wise to redesign me and that is a feat that shall not be undertaken.

Like the features not carried over, I'm gone. Now You See Me........

I always downloaded video reviews here as I don't have very good internet. So sad to see this feature removed. Expect to see less of me I guess :(

There are not enough filters on the reviews, at all.  I don't need to filter by letter, if I know the name of the game, I can just search for it to see its review.  If I want to see a platform's top rated racing games, according to gamespot, I need to filter by genre.  639+ results, is too many results for all genres is pointless.

Also, much more efficient to scan a list of 100 at a time in a streamlined table, instead of stupid huge picture, blurb list.  I've always known it was a bit stupid to come to this biased place filter and sort and throw things on my wish or shopping list.  Now, it isn't even worth it.

I think I've been here three times, since the change.  Each of those times, I did not get the information I wanted quickly.  Which means I left and got my information, somewhere else.  This site is such a waste of time, now.  This was the first time, I took time to find somewhere to complain about it.

The rebuild certainly isn't yet drawing me back in, for personal testimony.

Honestly I haven't been around here much in 3 years but I was surprised to see Unions go. They were the central part of my experience here 3 years ago. They weren't the public face of the website, but they were its heart and soul, to me. And they were the place for communities not solely based around gaming.

Were they really so rarely used as to be tossed?
Additionally I've seen commenting rates on most blogs I followed that had dozens of comments pre-revision drop MASSIVELY to one or two comments per blog if that. This must be due to lack of a "Friends' Blogs" RSS style feed as used to be in place.

seriously thinking of moving to another resource because of this new rating system.  Justification is not logical, whoever doesn't need the half system, won't use it.  I want to have it and consider 10 different scores not enough.

I'm all for out with the old and in with the new, but please please please GS improve the 'stacks' to allow a little more flexibility as to how you can sort the lists??!  Going backwards here folks...

Tracking games, adding to lists and keeping a track of new games and games I've played by dates of release was great satisfaction and brilliant comparing and delving into gaming history - this is near impossible now!  As people say, the stacks are now a joke - I don't care about the 'number order', the numbers don't mean a thing...

Hope you get this bit tweaked as overall seems a good revamp!

please, make a dropdown menu on news > so i can choose the platform.... i wanna read PC-ONLY news... why there's a dropdown menu on games but not on news? i have to click games > pc , wait the page to load, > news.... lame organization

btw, didn't like in general... it is slower and stacks are really a joke.... hope you change the site again soon! thanks!

Sorry guys,

I really wanted to welcome the new site change, but after 2 full weeks of getting adjusted to it, I can safely say that you (or more likely CBS) definitely fucked up on the whole site revamp.

First of all, why in the world would you want to use the same design aesthetic and  the same set of crappy features as the now nearly-identical Giantbomb?

Gaintbomb lost it's position and unique set of features in the "upgrade" process (and I've since gone to Raptr for achievement tracking). Now Gamespot is losing it's overall site usability and for that fact, overall usefulness on the gaming scene. I mean I get it, CBS is saving money using the same framework for both sites, but really, did both of them really need "improvements"?

Didn't the damn ad-income model work properly? Did you have to sacrifice 2 entire web portals to use that stupid CBS player?

Just a couple of things that grind my gears - and I'm not the only one:

- "stacks" are a joke

- personal account data is gone (where are my old game ratings?)

- reviews are completely diluted (game averages it's score between platforms, really?)

- RSS data is completely broken

Since Gamespot as a tool for tracking the games I've played and or completed is now completely gone, really what I want to do is just watch "The Point" and "Random Encounter" without slugging my way through this mess of a site for 10 minutes each time. But I can't really do that, can I? Not since invididual show RSS feeds no longer work.

Not to mention the fact that even as I'm writing this goddamn comment the site lags and I have to wait for the damn words I input to appear every 10 seconds.

It`s horrible... I get it that a new design is required in order to keep up with newer client platforms and add new modules, but to revamp the design to this extent?

For a fact, I came to GS to check what`s new, since... I don`t know what is, that`s why I come here and now I no longer have a segmented overview. Now my most used feature is *Search*... NOT a happy camper.

NOT STREAM ONLY PLEEEEEEEASE, at least make it progressive strem instead of the on demand.....my net sucks and cant keep up with on demand, wich is why i always downloaded the review videos. :(

Eliminating half points from game scoring? Great. Less averaging out of the different aspects of the game and more feeling-based, dumbed down scoring. Another step backwards.

Stop hiring just liberal arts majors and get some mathematics majors involved in the review process.

Yeah I'm not seeing any changes yet. Little slow on the push it seems. I work for a ticketing website and our new features and layouts are the same. We set a date and then a week later it's active.

It took me years to develop my game list and now it's corrupted in the "new" move.  Does anybody think about working out the bugs before launching or is this just the way it is now?  I'm also up for moving ahead with progress, but not to the point where those running the show don't take input from those using the product.  IGN is looking pretty good now.

I agree. I have an older rig that played videos in HD just fine after I downloaded them, but streaming them was kinda painful and boring to watch. The loss of that feature here has made this site somewhat less relevant to me.

I hope they bring back the download feature. It was excellent to get live events like E3 in HD after the download was up. Great speed test too.

@GSJones1994 Looks like the beta is no longer functional though.

ExtremePhobia

@rawkstar007 I agree! That way we can separate games based purely on objective data such as number of bugs and... and...

Well damn, that fell apart fast. Which is good because if we tried to be objective then AAA games would always get 8, 9, and 10 while indie games would get 1, 2, and 3. The more resources you have, the more you can stick to a polished and clean look with fewer bugs. After that you'd have to actual question the developers direction and such which would be far too subjective.

Maybe it'll change over at noon or something?

@nomailx What? They didn't say anything on Feedbackula about the show ending. Johnny did seem to kind of go on a rant about how he thought Feedbackula was encouraging the bad behavior of certain people on the site but I didn't think he going to cancel the show over it.

Ovirew
Ovirew

@nomailx He has another show, called the Waiting Game.  Actually, Feedbackula is still listed on the new site.

Where did they say they're ending it?  I haven't watched the latest episode so maybe they mention it there..

rawkstar007
rawkstar007

@ExtremePhobia @rawkstar007 That's a far too simplistic way of thinking about it. Games can still have a feeling-factor when scoring the game but they're steering their scoring system to the point where you can't trace their scoring process more and more, rendering there reviews towards more subjective and less objective. That's not a good thing.

They are blurring the lines between critic reviews and user reviews, making their opinions less relevant in the long run.

korvus
korvus

@TheBlueDrew Yep, he's trying to make it a bit more "friendly and useful". Not as funny, but better in the long run in my opinion.

korvus
korvus

@whiteagle18 Yep, I would say do it by years. Seniors first, give them a week or so to change usernames, then move on to the next year, and so on. If they're redoing everything why not let users pick their usernames again? Even if it showed "X (previously Y)" for a while for people who are just trying to erase their bad rep here.
