Important Update to the GameSpot Community Code of Conduct

Important changes and updates for the GameSpot Community Code of Conduct.

GameSpot is on the verge of momentous change as we prepare to re-launch the site in the biggest change it’s seen in 17 years. During this time of self-reflection we’re aiming to improve as many aspects of the site as possible. One of the biggest issue plaguing GameSpot is the abysmal practices seen in our comment section.

The gaming industry strives in partaking of past exploits in fantasy worlds and individual experiences that evoke emotional responses. We’ve all come together to talk about the latest game releases or to recall the good old days in gaming, it’s the very reason so many of you participate in our forums and comment sections. Not only do we encourage it, we can’t thank you enough for doing so on a daily basis. Unfortunately, some of you have decided to abuse our communal space with uncalled for levels of abusive and offensive language. We aim to fix that.

It is my pleasure to announce that we will be changing our Terms of Use along with revising how we moderate the site. If we are to grow as a community, we must hold some level of respect towards each other and in doing so we must be able to communicate like proper human beings. Hate speech and threats have no place in any community that hopes to be welcoming and engaging towards anyone who simply wants to talk to likeminded individuals. I realize that simply saying we are changing things isn’t enough so starting today anyone with moderating powers on the site will enforce our existing guidelines (and continue to do so once new ones are in place) in the following way.

First offense: User will receive a warning.

Second offense: Seven-day suspension from the site.

Third offense: Permanent Ban from GameSpot

For the sake of clarity, this will include forums, comment sections, and blogs. The ban will be imposed to those that violate our guidelines within a span of 60 days of each offense. If no further incidents occur within the 60 day period, the user will be cycled back to good standing all is right in the world.

For most of you, the only effect of these changes should be a noticeable improvement in the quality of conversation across the site. On the other hand some of you might see this as an unrealistic request and to those individual I’d like to remind them that there are plenty of vestibules in the online space that would welcome your closed minded views. GameSpot will not tolerate hate speech, threats, and we will ban accordingly at our own discretion.

The GameSpot community team, consisting of Synthia Weires, Frances Troche, Zorine Te, and our dedicated moderators will be working diligently towards improving the conversation on the site. We hope you continue to enjoy the site and we’ll see you in the comment section.

Hopefully this will lead to less trollers and fanboys insulting other users. One can only hope that gamers can learn to show respect, they continue to make me feel ashamed to be a gamer almost every day by their lack of respect and care towards other users.

This kind of junk keeps me from going to the forums, haven't made a comment there in a long long time. whats the point of talking about gaming if you can't curse out those with different opinions...........the whole thing becomes pointless.

I"m all down for this.. Anything to make this section more productive in translating constructive criticism  Cause even in negativity one should be able to pull out a positive when properly submitted.  User Responsibility is of Main Concern.

Now this should also fall inline with GS titled topics made by it's authors, cause while you want hits, you also lure in community with over exaggerated or fiery headlines that you also need to be held accountable for,

This was long needed.. Good Luck.

"closed minded"?

i dont know how a whole site could have its head up its own a**, but gamespot found a way

This means I can start getting involved in the community again!! Yay!! A welcome change!!

Also, cursing, anger, and passion are not the same thing as hate speech, so I think a lot of the "worrisome" comments below are probably unwarrranted. (yeah, I probably spelled that wrong.)

Well, it seems like you cannot have one without the other. You cannot expect to clean up the community while still keeping Feedbacula around -- it is counter intuitive. Someone just has to admit to themselves that Feedbacula was probably not the best idea and let it quietly die, or at least don't highlight the most ignorant comments (instead highlight the most intellectual comments).

Also, I am all for this three strike moderation system, but I also think GS has to be careful not to go "too far" the other way in what they consider instances that give people a strike. Basically going from absolutely no moderation (seemingly anyway) to a too draconian approach can have equal problems. We have to all accept that everyone has a bad day and may have woken up that morning with pee pee in their Cheerios, or that these this vs. that "discussions" can get pretty heated. I am just suggesting that some common sense and a little bit of tolerance is involved here and everything should be fine.

I just remember a time before when you couldn't really address anyone's comment with criticism without people reporting it to the moderator. Ugh. Let's try to avoid becoming oversensitive now, please.

So Feedbacula will no longer live ? Because if you want profanity, its there.

Good change -- although this statement really needs to be proof-read.  There are quite a number of grammatical mistakes.

I wholeheartedly have no problems w/ these changes AT ALL. Matter of fact, welcome it w/ open arms b/c it's most certainly long overdue.

All of these asshat 'little children' cropping up on here being unruly, rude, and disgustingly disrespectful has really brought our community down. It's unfortunate that the rules have to be somewhat jacked back up to 'strict (or at least quasi-strict) status'; but 'oh well', since some people can't come on here and talk w/ some kind of human decency or, at the least, common sense and self-restraint--then they asses just gots to get a hefty dose of regulated reality.

Still disagree with the review but whatever....

YukoAsho

Honestly, this isn't strict enough.

If it were me, I'd permaban after a second instance of trolling, or a first offense of any post with nothing but bigotry and/or threats of violence.  Including IP ban.  Or at least a 60-day ban if you MUST give third chances instead of just second ones.  It won't stop all trolls, but making it difficult for all but the most pathetic of morons to return after a ban is better than giving leeway.

I'd also take Nameless_One's advice.  Disable new account creation starting the week before an especially popular game (Mario, Zelda, CoD, et al) is reviewed on site and ending the week after.  If you have to disable account creation throughout the entire holiday season because of a quick succession of such games, then it's perhaps for the best.

While most on GameStop are fine, upstanding individuals, it's clear that large swaths of people on this site only wish to stir shit up and ruin it for everyone else.  The good majority cannot be held hostage by trolls, bigots and angry teenage boys.  A no-nonsense approach is what the dregs of this site deserve.  The rest of us deserve a place where we can debate games without being shouted down.

I welcome this.

It's about high time these jackasses get put in their place for their disgusting remarks.

I approve of this change. Ive been coming to this site since 1998~~ and in the last few years the GS comment section has become the dumpster of the internet gaming community.

This is good news because it means people will think before they type. I have to include myself in that. Here's to a bigger and better community.

Finally.  This was long overdue in my opinion.  I am especially pleased that it seems to have hacked off the exact people that most of us would prefer would go away anyway.  Win win.  Passionate opinion and civilized discussion does not have to be mutually exclusive.  The cries of stifling some sort of pure open forum discussion are the same ones that have been whined on ever site that has a common sense TofU.  Don't go away mad just....

Shakin' in my boots.

It's a shame it's not 2003, I'm not 14 and there's things such as duplicate accounts, proxies and VPN's at a cheap disposal.

Keep your chin up GameSpot, tell me again ... who decided to let Carol review a GTA game?, it's because the chemistry was so great, or you're being naive in not knowing what would happen, feeding the wolves.

Ultimately, if GS wants to improve the content and average poster quality, instead of pulling crap like this, they should make it harder for the swarm of idiots to join the site during "hot" events like a highly anticipated review. Have a better screening process where new accounts need to be verified first, or even make it flat-out impossible for new users to join the site during critical events that are known to attract trolls, and worse.

Not the perfect solution, and not exactly fair, but still, much better than punishing regulars over the actions of people who have no interest in being a part of the community, and are here only to stir shit, spread hate and vitriol until a mod can deal with them...

Blabadon
Blabadon

Holy crap. Any chance of optimism I've had for this new ToU is gone. This isn't a middle ground for the strict ToU of the past and the recently retired lenient one.

This is a load of horsecrap in its absolute strictness and perpetual stupidity. The moderators and their "discretion" are in control of a user's account's right for the silliest things. I thought I was living in the 21st century where people weren't hurt by being called an idiot when they were in fact being idiots. I have witnessed recently my account being suspended because I called someone "the world's shittiest cow."

If you find anything actually wrong in this, in saying that someone is not a good fanboy, you are what's wrong with this site. Not the users who are suddenly subject to changes where you're supposed to sing Kumbaya with idiots because GameSpot's staff feels a kindergarten is the future of our forums, but the people who are too wuss to deal with the effective values of the lenient ToU and what made it great.

I'm sorry speaking your mind and calling someone horrible comments that reeked of bigotry were somehow lumped into one group by the inane staff behind this decision. To punish a few because, for some reason, Feedbackula didn't notice until now it may have been adding to the negative comments or that taking care of those who were actually being these horrible people was too hard, is a slap in the face for the community members.

What do we get? We get having to make sure that the local troll's feelings don't get hurt when someone says that their thread is stupid. We get a staff that will somehow devalue their community because they felt that a community-based award group's time taken out to support said awards was not worth discussing with them. We get a GameSpot that SOMEHOW DIDN'T THINK that having the biggest game of the generation reviewed by a transexual who lambasted (apologies for the strong word, but it's for the point) the game for being misogynist in a world as dreadful and spiteful as its own would not be attacked by the amount of young teenagers with internet access.

GameSpot's problem is the lack of foresight it is with dealing with issues. I miss the old staff. They didn't try to mess with the unions, they didn't shit the bed with the community, they, if anything, kept out of things unless absolute need be. Those times were like when they tried communicating with union leaders to make unions better. Now? We get GameSpot's staff that likes to nuke the happy city to get rid of the cockroach under the couch.

Shame on you guys for doing this to your community. If anything, the longtime users here who once got to finally speak their minds in 2011 suddenly having to watch their feet on a field of landmines again is disrespectful.

McStrongfast

Noticed he's actually had three violations in that thread within an hour.

EDIT
Or I'm sorry, profiles are only tagged as banned when they're perma'd, so he might've actually gotten suspended.

NEVER MIND.

Reported a dude who posted two transphobic comments within a couple of minutes. Account wasn't suspended.

Only received one notification confirming one report, so it's possible he deleted one comment before a mod got to it I suppose, or something.

Anyway, I hope these rules are actually being enforced for realsies.

EDIT
His post history says both comments were deleted by a moderator.

I am glad Feedbackula probably had its last episode aired. Funny as it was thanks to the work of the presenter it really shed a lot of light on what kind of people come here sometimes.

Gamespot - Makes a show that revels in negative and abusive comments . Is then shocked by negative abusive comments. Finishes of with sweeping generalizations about it's users by implementing 'we are not happy with you' messages across key featured articles and videos and a swift change to the sites rules.

man its about time. The comments just got too personal. It was just too many jerks saying really disrespectful things. They wont ban you for speaking your mind, they will ban you for calling other people a-holes. Lets get back to regular discussions, but mature discussions. The 12 year olds have been in charge for too long. thank you gamespot

PumpkinBoogie

@cheese232323 Exactly! It's damn shame when you can go on other game sites and have their communities talk about how horrid our comments sections have become. As being a longtime member here (it'll be 7 years this coming Sunday), it's honestly become an embarrassment in the past few years (and especially coming to head a couple of weeks ago).

I, for one, welcome the changes, too.

@Akucapri So basically... Gamestop should be blamed because everyone else is lacking common sense in 2013!

Lucca202
Lucca202

@Akucapri Nobody has to "let" anyone review anything. Carolyn has as much of a right of reviewing any game as anyone else. Besides, Kevin himself has stated that his review of the game would have been no different from hers.

There's no such thing as "feeding the wolves". You're blaming the victim. Blaming a reviewer because a bunch of angry bigots decided to be mad at 9/10 score.

NameIess_One
NameIess_One

@Blabadon

Well said, Blabs!

I fully agree how a good ToU and staff should be about keeping away from things, unless the things get really ugly. A good posting experience is the one where every user can stand up for themselves without fear of getting moderated, instead of relying on mommy mods to fix their issues and help with hurt feelings. Being able to call out and shut an idiot up on your own accord is far better than cowardly relying on others to do it for you.

The lenient ToU, that was the best thing that ever happened to this place during my posting time, and having it taken away is a crime against every form of common sense.

This approach won't solve anything, the site will remain the same kind of a cesspool, comment sections still swarmed with low level accounts who stir some shit with a few posts, not caring what happens next. In the end, only good posters will suffer over this, the same posters who are used to be able to speak their mind, as it always should be!

Lucca202
Lucca202

@raduz123 Johnny actually talked about this in GTA V feedbackula. His intention with the show was that, being ridiculed, people who posted crappy comments would stop. But he thinks it might have backfired, and after this change on rules, the show will probably just end.

@NameIess_One @Blabadon

You can still voice your opinion, stick up for yourself, and call people out on nonsense while still being an intelligent and respectful human being.

The use of facts, logical, and critical thinking helps your argument far more than petty insults, hate speech, bigotry, and manic raving.

@Lucca202 @raduz123 Rule #1: Don't feed the trolls. Giving them publicity is just one of the many ways they intake their sustenance.

This change is for the best!
