The Gambit Movie Delayed Yet Again, For Those Still Convinced It Will Actually Happen

Gambit might release in 2020. But it also might not.

Oh, Gambit. You're the little movie that could but with every new update, seemingly won't. There's been some juggling of release dates from Fox's film division, which sees Dark Phoenix, the next X-Men film, delayed by a few months. Instead of arriving in February, it's now taking up residence on June 7--a slot formerly occupied by Gambit--according to Deadline. That leaves Gambit knocked back nearly a year to March 13, 2020.

The Gambit movie has been a fascinating thing to watch. One minute, it'll seem like production is ramping up to begin. While in the next, it looks near death. In recent years, it's cycled through the hands of a number of potential directors, from Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt, to Pirates of the Caribbean vet Gore Verbinski. Through it all, though, Channing Tatum still seems set on starring as the X-Men character.

Now Playing: Dark Phoenix Trailer Breakdown!

With all of the behind-the-scenes changes, Gambit has seen a few release dates over the past couple years. It's most recent date of June 7, 2019, might have seemed like wishful thinking, though. After all, the end of 2018 is closing in fast and filming has yet to commence. In fact, there's not even an officially announced director at this point.

So it should come as no surprise that not only is Gambit getting delayed again. Of course, with the upcoming sale of Fox's film division to Disney, there's no telling whether this particular release date will become a reality or if we'll ever see a Gambit movie.

One thing is for sure, though. Producer Simon Kinberg--who also wrote and directed Dark Phoenix--still wants it to happen. In an interview with IGN, Kinberg said, "When you look at Gambit, he's a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy."

Of course, that doesn't mean you should be expecting something along the lines of When Gambit Met Sally. Instead, he claims it's still very much a superhero movie, just with a specific tone to it. "You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely," he said, "It's not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe."

If Gambit is the rom-com to Logan's western, that's a movie we want to see. Whether we'll actually ever get to see it is another story entirely, but don't give up hope just yet! In the meantime, get ready for a PG-13 edit of Deadpool 2.
