Gambit Movies Loses Director--Yes, Again--As Fox Changes Deadpool 2 And New Mutants Dates

Maybe a Gambit movie will happen someday.

And now for a story you've heard many times before: There's trouble afoot with the standalone Gambit movie, set in the X-Men universe. The film, which has gone through a number of possible directors, is on the market once again after Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) has decided to abandon ship.

The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says Verbinski leaving the project comes as Gambit was gearing up to start production in March. Channing Tatum is still attached to star in the film, which was in the process of casting when the director removed himself from the equation. Now somebody new will need to be hired to steer the production.

Verbinski is far from the first director to be associated with Gambit, only to step away. Previously, Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt was signed on for the movie, as was Bourne Identity helmer Doug Liman.

With the search for a new director comes a new release date for Gambit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will now arrive on June 1, 2019. Then again, with the impending purchase of 20th Century Fox--the X-Men films home studio--by Disney, who knows if the movie will even come to fruition at this point.

In the meantime, some other upcoming X-Men films are shifting release dates as well. New Mutants is being pushed back nearly 10 months and will now debut on February 22, 2019. Meanwhile, Deadpool 2 is moving up two weeks for a May 18 release. Dark Phoenix remains on track for a November 2 premiere.
