Space Invaders targeting big screen - Report

Producer of Transformers, Doom big-screen adaptations snaps up the rights to Taito arcade classic, begins hunt for a writer.

Arcades may be a thing of the past in the West, but they're apparently just gaining momentum in Hollywood. Following up on news that Missile Command and Asteroids would be heading to the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that the Taito classic Space Invaders has taken the first step toward a feature film adaptation.

To stay true to the source material, Space Invaders will have to be a black-and-white film.

According to the report, producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker have optioned the rights to make a Space Invaders feature film. While this will be Pritzker's first game-to-film project (her previous credits include last year's Rabbit Hole and 2008's The Spirit), di Bonaventura has reached into the game industry for source material before. He was attached to produce a movie based on the arcade classic Asteroids in 2009 and had a hand in 2005's adaptation of Doom, which made it to theaters but was met with critical approbation. More recently, di Bonaventura has produced the Transformers and G.I. Joe big-screen adaptations. The project is still in the very early stages, with the producers currently looking for a writer.

The early days of gaming are an apparently fertile ground for feature films. In addition to Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Missile Command, Leonardo DiCaprio has previously been tapped to play Nolan Bushnell in a biopic about the Atari founder.

I hope they make it a horror film, that way it'll stop it from being your usual action movie

I suppose it's easier to adapt the early games because there is no story or lore you have to adhere to.

This isn't going to end well. Movie ideas like these make me think they've run out of ideas for movies

Its obvious that the trend has shifted from zombie movies to invasion movies. I dunno if this is a good thing or bad thing. I like both kinds of movies, for the most part

Hell to the naw! This is one of the dumbest moves ever, and it literally sounds like something you'd see as a fake movie in a real movie. What's next, Pac-Man? Asteroids? Gauntlet? Knight and Day-- oh, wait, nevermind.

Well a Space Invaders movie is easy to make. Just make another movie where earth is invaded from space. The aliens have come to conquer Earth. With waves of space ships. a Popcorn movie for 2013.

It could be done if they follow the style of movies like Tron Legacy: unique visual style + house soundtrack - cliched story - one-dimensional characters = summer movie fun.

Yeah I can just see people hiding under sheds whilst bombs drop all around by aliens shifting left to right and then down.. Seriously? What the fudge?

Must be hard to make a film based on a game with practically no story at all. Hmmm.. I wonder how a Pac-Man movie will work...

I just asked my dad what he thought of it since it was one of his favourite games and he just laughed.

Haven't we already watched alot of Space Invader (alien invasion) movies. This games story is so open to intepretation that they could go anywhere with the story. Really they are just selling the name.

Has there ever been a a good movie based on a Videogame? I really can't think of one. Although I can see why they make them, they do seem to make money. But a Space Invaders movie??? No way in hell will that make money. The game is way too old.

This, or any Atari 2600 game adapted into a film would be a mistake worse than dare i say it......SUPER MARIO BROTHERS: THE MOVIE.

At least Michael Bay isn't directing it: otherwise the entire movie would be about a geeky teen, his hot almost girlfriend, dogs humping, a mom getting high off pot brownies, and maybe a couple of scenes with actual space invaders. That, and explosions.

With the right script and direction, this could be fun. Yes, there's virtually no plot, but what's there graphicwise and soundwise could make a really good campy tongue in cheek movie with deliberately bad special effects and acting.

Will I get thrown out of the theater if I make "woowoowoo" noises every time the UFO flies over the top of the invaders? (Or files through the rocks if they are also doing Asteroids?)

What was stopping the ten thousand other space invading craptastic films from calling themselves that.....oh yeah there is nothing there but a basic idea. Good Luck with that winning idea fellas.

A movie about invaders from space. I'm sure someone could write up a decent script for that and call it Space Invaders. There might be a little hope...

"adaptations snaps up the rights to Taito arcade classic, begins hunt for a writer." Better be one hell of a writer because i don't se a good movie out of this never, after all, games with good story are already screwed by movies, what can you expect from a movie based in a game with NO story at all?

So are we to expect Uwe Boll to direct. This is right up his alley. Maybe they can do a first person view of alien invaders as they get shot in the face, that would sell tickets!

oh I'd watch it for sure, I'd watch this movie just to laugh at how bad it's going to be. It's sad how much Hollywood lacks originality nowadays.

I don't know how to feel about this news. I mean, certainly there are a lot of angles and interpretations that one can get from the Space Invader's story, but in my opinion, Pong has a lot more depth and a lot more to offer those who enjoy rich and vibrant storytelling.

Go ahead and laugh, but you know there will be a couple of million mouthbreathers lining up on opening day, just like they do every other time Hollywood wipes their a** with a piece of celluloid.

The only reason to get the rights to this or any other game of that era is for the name recognition and that's it. These games had no story. Independence Day could have been named Space Invaders, Armageddon could have been named Asteroids. Now they get to make another pointless cliche alien invasion movie but make it seem like a big deal because it'll be called Space Invaders.

Did I just read that? Hollywood your stupidity knows no bounds. Who on earth is interested in an Asteroid or Missile Command movie? Show of hands please. That's right: NO ONE. What corporate suit is actually sitting around reminiscing about those early days in the 1980's at the local arcade and thinks to himself: "Those games would make great movies," really? Not to mention that those games had NO story. It would be named that in title only.
