Sony takes Sucker Punch

Sony picks up studio behind PS3-exclusive Infamous, Sly Cooper franchises for undisclosed sum.

by

Sony Computer Entertainment announced today it was acquiring Sucker Punch Productions--the development house responsible for both the Infamous and Sly Cooper franchises. Sucker Punch will become the 16th studio operating under the SCE Worldwide Studios umbrella, joining such other outfits as Zipper Interactive, Guerrilla Games, and Naughty Dog.

Cole McGrath's electrifying talents look set to be confined to the PlayStation for the foreseeable future.

Based in Bellevue, Washington, Sucker Punch was founded in 1997, and it released its first title, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, two years later. In 2002, it released Sly Cooper: Theivius Racoonus for the PlayStation 2, and that was followed by two further Sly Cooper games for the same platform. The company made the jump to the PlayStation 3 when it launched the critically acclaimed Infamous franchise in 2009, with Infamous 2 hitting shelves earlier this summer.

At the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, a new Sly Cooper game, Thieves in Time, was confirmed, but this title will not be developed by Sucker Punch. No other titles have been confirmed as being in production at the studio.

@RE4GreatesGame "rubbish Infamous 2 is!" " one of the worst games of the year!" I don't know how much good games you be playing to put this as lowest. You must appreciate all games that between average and AAA to be a true Gamer. and this is not a game below average!

i thought sony alredy owned sucker punch to be honest so reading that they now do isnt much in the way of news but reading that sly4 wont be a sucker punch game now thats a headline almost like nintendo anouncing that super mario galaxy is to be made by infinity ward

@justcool2 i am not complaining ,its just something i wish had happened and not true regarding the pc exclusive games if you dont consider mmorpgs and rps games (and lets face it those sort of games would never work well on consoles ) then the ps3 has more exclusive games then both the pc and xbox 360 combined

Many of you are saying it's a good move because now they have a bigger budget, provided by Sony. Soooo...it's probably safe to say they had money issues, which leads me to conclude that they weren't selling enough games as they were, independent, and exclusive to Sony platforms. Going multiplatform would've set them straight - a broader audience, more money coming in, they keep their independence, etc. Hmmm?

ohh man!!! im sad that Sucker Punch is not developing Sly Cooper:Thieves in Time

@ToTs_00, LOL, don't feel bad....I actually thought the same. With a relationship that exclusive from the jump, I just always assumed they were, too. Well I guess we can all say it's officially for real now, they are signed under Sony.

@santinegrete: Rare...now that's a blast from my past. I miss Killer Instinct and KI2. They were the fourth leg of the fighter stool from the arcade days (Tekken, Street Fighter, and MK being the other three). Like every other bought studio (Origin Systems, for instance - damn you, Richard Garriott), it seems that Sucker Punch has been hit with the Final Fantasy "Doom" spell, and there's a counter about their heads. Hopefully it's a long one...

I hope this doesn't affect Infamous 3; if, in fact they will be making an Infamous 3.

I thought Sony already owned them.

And this zapped me with surprise just as when I figured out Insomniac worked for Sony but the last one didn't own them. @snugglebear: Afraid so? That happened to Rare ltd. right?

This is good news for Sony. Even better news for PlayStation fans. I just hope Sucker Punch are equally as happy.

Wouldn't matter genius. Sony owns the inFamous IP anyways.

This really doesn't change anything.

I'm never thrilled to see independent studios get bought, but on the other hand since they were a de facto Sony studio to begin with, maybe this will give them better access to development tools and hardware. In any case, I'm looking forward to an Infamous 3, I hope it's in the cards. Sony seems to treat their subsidiary studios better than other development umbrella operations at any rate. You don't really see the EA/Activision thing of shutting down studios the second they have a game that wasn't a blockbuster.

So what? Infamous was already a PS3 exclusive. It isn't hurting Naughty Dog to be SCE owned.

@adit942 come on!! the pc has got tons and tons of exclusive games, xbox also has quite a few... so stop complaining "its not fair!" every, single time sony brings out an exclusive, at least half-decent game!! >:L

@bradlbauer What can Sony bring to that table for them? Probably bigger pockets filled with money to make bigger and better games.

@blancobo The article mentions that naughty dog, guerrilla games and others as SCEWS. Are u sure that naughty dog isn't a part of the group?

blancobo

@James_Maupin Most of the headlines you see regarding lay offs are charged with sensationalism. Most developing studios will hire tons of programmers, and staff in general to make a project come true. But these people, which are "layed off" later on are in many cases contract employees who's contracts simply run out. It is one of the many effects of the globalization and the need to be competitive. No use in keeping a big staff if the game is done and there is not a ton to do until the next big project. As much as it stinks, it is still how the business is run.

blancobo

the developers of Motorstorm (Evolution Studios) were also acquired by Sony back on 2008.Strange that Naughty Dog is not part of this group, I guess it is because they opt not to or something like that... to maintain some of their creativity control or else.

@lifemeister Sony + Sucker punch = Bigger budget = Better games.

That pun in the headline was so terrible I nearly vomited. I demand an apology from gamespot.

Smart move. Sucker Punch are one of the best developers around right now and Infamous 2 is easily the best game I've played this year so this was probably inevitable. I fully expect Naughty Dog will be next. No point risking another Insomniac situation.

I hope Sony doesn't layoff half the studio when they finish a game, like they did with Zipper.

wwlettsome

I don't see this as being a good thing but maybe it will allow them access to some deeper pockets to help manage development expenses since they will now be part of Sony.

Considering the lackluster sales of inFAMOUS 2, this seems like a bad move for Sucker Punch. Going multiplat would have been a smarter move for the company. I assume that they were considering it and Sony knew they were and made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Now they get to officially play second fiddle to Naughty Dog until their talent starts leaving for other ventures, if previous comparable buyouts are any indication.

zepfan_75
zepfan_75

This is good news, as long as Sucker Punch continues to make games for PS, but what would be great news is if all the developers that they have found/bought out would stay around to make an awesome 1st party lineup for when the PS4 is launched.

lifemeister

Was Sucker Punch planning to go multiplatform? Is that why Sony had to acquire the studio? Why buy it when it's already exclusive to Sony platforms?
