Sony restores final downed PSN services

Game company confirms last of Qriocity functionality is now back online, marking end of seven-week hacker outage.

by

Though Sony Corp. continues to be battered by the hacker collective known as LulzSec, the company has taken one of the final steps in putting to rest the opening salvo in its security breach drama. Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that it has restored full functionality to its Qriocity service in all regions save Japan.

Seven weeks on, and Sony's hacker headache is over…right?

With the return of the Qriocity service, Sony customers can now access in full the Video on Demand and Music Unlimited services through the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PCs. As part of its partial service restoration in mid-May, Sony had previously brought back online Qriocity's Music Unlimited service for PS3 users only.

Today's Qriocity restoration marks the end of a service outage that began on April 20, when Sony brought down the PlayStation Network, ostensibly for just a few days. However, after confirming that a cyberattack had exposed some 77 million PSN accounts, not to mention an additional 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts, it wasn't until May 15 before the gaming company began restoring PSN functionality.

On June 1, Sony restored service to the PlayStation Store, giving gamers the chance to once again engage in digital commerce through the online platform. Sony has also begun offering a selection of free games and other perks for affected PS3 and PSP users. Sign-ups have also begun for 12 free months of coverage in Debix's identity-theft protection program.

Reply from Sony about Hong Kong service..... "Please be informed that we are making necessary preparations as well as in discussion with concerned authorities. We will inform you via web announcement as soon as services can be resumed. We apologize for the inconvenience. For future updates, please refer to this link at http://asia.playstation.com/hk/en/news/p/psn_restore."

I am well aware of that, it's just odd that I can access the store within Japan if it isnt the Japanese Store.

@Oldboy08 and others My understanding of the situation in Japan is that the Japanese government is blocking the PSN from going up until they are absolutely sure things are ok. And customers in Japan seem far more patient than elsewhere; with the earthquake, the PSN doesn't seem all that important. I think prepaid cards are more popular than credit cards in Japan, anyway. I think if you enter "PSN Japan government" in a search engine, you'll find heaps of articles on this issue.

still can't change password / play games / shop (Hong Kong account) I have a US account and AU account, but all my stuff is saved to my local HK account. Is there any way to transfer all my stats to my other accounts? e.g. my trophies, BFBC2, COD, GT5 stats?

@brian419 What the hell kinda cable setup did you have, a string with two cups attached at the end? I don't have to deal with the dreaded phone line filters and I 10 megs and run about 8 devices simultaneously with not even a hiccup.

It's a good thing but I really would like to know why Japan is holding out and know what they know about Sony's security system.

Still can not login at the regional webpages of playstation. For instance to be able to enter in a cool competition. There is a cool competition for WKC2 and I'm not able to enter.

Yesterday the PSN was extremely lagging, and I mean extremely... In addition, i'm still unable to download the 1.03 patch for dead nation. The download freeze before giving me an error. And also, some of my friends lost their account when the psn went back up... Not really over yet lol... Out of subject: they should allow dlc codes to be use worlwide, not only in f-word-ing asia. .. i'm sick of that!

@ElevenHandMan, i used to think it was my connection or even because i used wifi on my ps3.. but now i use 360 via wifi and the ps3 wired.. and 360 download stuff twice as fast.... so its not the contection... maybe its because every1 is just now getting to download their games with a error code every 5 minutes???? and i will not leave my ps3 on over night... thats how people get killed in fires!!!

This is soooooo not true, iam not able to change my password yet, the da** site is still under maintenance, I have a Bahraini account, when I send an email to Sony UK they never answer, I wonder if this is the way they think of their customers ?? maybe we are not so important to sony ... Just comparing the excellent xbox360 live with PSN crap makes me laugh ..

Well I've struggled a bit with the store but my downloads have been quick, even with Virgin Media big brother capping my speed. Won't be long and distant memory will be all that is left. Hackers identity will be found eventually and they will get what's due. SONY will find them and most probably hire them.

I'm in Japan...my North American PSN store is working fine...while my Japanese account isn't allowed in the Japanese store. Pretty odd.

@fadersdream Ive been the victim of theft, Both online and in real life, Trust me I know what it feels like. But Sony is a giant in entertainment and to have that pathetic excuse of security they had is just disapointing.

Downloads for me are really slow.Took 6 hrs to download Infamous and 90 min to download LBP but it plays online fine.I have 3 meg DSL, which is good enough for the price.Annoying sometimes when I have an hour long update when I turn my console on.Don't like cable, the connection speed varies so much, but with DSL I can play online with multiple lap tops going in my house and no lag.

I still have to download my free games. @ElevenHandMan @monson21502 Uhhh, that's just your faulty connection there buddy. Sony has nothing to do with the rates at which your ISP downloads. Leave it on over night. Go to System Setting>Turn Off System>And put a check in the box that says turn off system after background downloads complete. ************************************************************************ It depends on the server and the location of the server and how many routes you have to pass through to get to it. Part of it is Sony's fault. It's not just the user's ISP provider. Sony's servers have always been slow for me. Updates and large games take awhile to download compared to M$ Xbox Live. This is a fact as I've had many friends with both consoles test the speeds from various locations around the U.S. , and just about all of them said it's slower on PSN. Some international location actually have much faster speeds then U.S., so if you are saying it's very fast chances are good you don't live in the U.S.

i'm in South Korea, still no PSN love from Sony... but my connection switched from "undergoing maintenance" to error 80710016... which one site defines as "This error is by an issue with the Playstation Network being down." noooooo... really?

@suprsolider Stop worrying so much. No one would ever want to steal a Canadians identity anyways. Haha I am joking :P Seriously I hear ya it would be nice to have if it happens. Want mine? My credit is shot so I will feel sorry for the poor soul that steals mine. Joke will be on them :P

Still waiting for my Identity theft protection for CANADA. But I don't see anyone outside of the US,Europe or Japan getting any because it's obvious Sony only cares about those 3 areas, the rest of us can go to hell I guess. Fine by me Sony, I am switching consoles next gen, going to Xbox. You burned allot of loyal Playstation fans with this and I bet you will lose more. I hope you lose your lawsuits Sony.

the JPN Store is still down, or at least it entered "racist mode". it can be partially accessed from the PSP, but not at all from Media Go.

@thorughfire That is true, they didn't have the security that just about every other company has to protect credit cards. They kept information they didn't need. And they were warned to better their security.

If Sony had bother to put money into descent security then they would have had this problem.

@monson21502, the download speed depends on your internet connection and don't you have other things to do besides trying to find ways to criticize Sony?

you guys surprise me, in indonesia do you know how slow the internet speed? i download FF8, its about 3 giga if i not wrong, do you know how many times i should spend to wait it? 3 Days, and then you guys saying that,, infamous only takes 1 hour 20 minutes, and LBP only takes 30 minutes, that makes me envy you.

BILLNYE6983

@ElevenHandMan Sony actually does... download speed is dependent on your dl speed and the actual location you are downloading from. That doesn't mean Sony is responsible for it being slow though.
