September's Xbox One Update Out Today -- Here's What It Includes

Boot-to-TV option and improved Party app among the new features introduced to Xbox One this week via latest update.

Microsoft has launched a new Xbox One system update worldwide that introduces a range of new features, some of which were announced earlier this month at Gamescom.

The first of these features, including a new media player app, an improved Party app, and a boot-to-TV option, are now available, while you'll have to wait a bit longer for other features, like DLNA support.

Below is a list of the new Xbox One features included with the system update, courtesy of Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. Microsoft adds that you can have your voice heard for future updates by sharing feedback through the official Xbox Feedback site.

The Xbox One September update includes:

  • A new Media Player app: Play media files from an attached USB device with the new media player app – DNLA support for home media servers coming soon. Xbox One will support more formats than Xbox 360, including support for dozens of new file formats like Mpeg 2 TS, animated gifs and MKV, which will be added by the end of the year.
  • Party on in the new and improved Party App: Be the leader of your party with the new party leader setting. As the party leader, you can change whether the party requires invitations and you can remove others from the party. The updated app also lets you see what activities everyone in your party is doing and who is playing in the same game with you in addition to being able to quickly perform common actions like muting, joining, or sending game invites.
  • New features for SmartGlass: You can now post status messages from the Activity Feed and comments, or share items from both your Activity Feed and Game Clips. Along with the new comment and share features, a personalized Activity Feed has been added to your profile and messages have been updated to a new layout supporting a full conversation view. Additionally, we are adding the ability to record game clips directly from the Now Playing bar. Finally, for users who upgrade the app directly, we have introduced a What's New page highlighting the features of each release.
  • "Xbox On" capabilities in Australia, Canada (French), Italy, Spain, and Mexico: New regions will have the ability to use the "Xbox On" Kinect voice command to power on their consoles when they’re in connected standby (Instant On) mode.
  • OneGuide comes to Brazil, Mexico, Austria, and Ireland: The ability to configure live TV listings will be available to all customers in these four countries. Also coming to these markets is the ability to use OneGuide and the Universal Remote Control in SmartGlass.
  • Boot-to-TV: Now Xbox One owners will be able to set their console to boot directly to television when coming out of connected standby.
  • Bandwidth Usage Display: Bandwidth Usage will show users how much bandwidth their Xbox One is consuming over a period of time, a useful tool for those who want to track against bandwidth caps set by ISPs in certain markets.
  • GameDVR deletes: Users will be able to choose multiple GameDVR clips to delete at once in the Upload app.
  • Save your Avatar Gamerpic: A new option to save Avatar Gamerpics to users' OneDrive.

My only complaint about xbox1 is that when you turn it on it turns the tv on but does not go to the appropriate inout, and if your tv is on and you then turn on the xbox1 it turns your tv off. With the PS4, you turn it on and it goes directly to the appropriate input as well as turns on your tv and when you turn off the PS4 it goes back to tv vice turning it off. If M$ could get this feature fixed, that would be awesome!

XONE is getting better not say the PS4 can't do all the same things..but XONE in my opinion is taking the cake so to speak!

I've really been trying to keep the PS4 love going but there's just things XONE can do that PS4 can't right now!

However I'm really hanging to play some PS4 exclusives UC4, 1886 etc...

Not that this has anything to do with the discussion, but Major Nelson is getting on in years.  He looks a bit, smaller if that makes any sense.

Yeah, the only thing I care about is the Bandwidth Usage Display and Party App updates.

I'm happy about the Bandwith Usage display. I kept going over my bandwith usage with lousy Cox Communications. They only give me 250GB a month. I didn't realize that all my systems (PS3, XBox 360, XB1 and PS4) were set for auto_update. So as soon as I turned these systems on, they would automatically update any games or applications that had updates available for them. So in just one day, I had used up 55GB of bandwith. Then I found out my kids were streaming Netflix movies all day and playing games online for hours. By the end of the month my bandwith usage was 363GB. Well over my limit. They raised it to 300 and then to 350. Not they have lowered it back to 250GB. Thankfully I was on vacation last week, so nothing was used for 10 days. Still, I've already used 23GB in 2 days. So I've turned off auto_update on all my game consoles. This little feature will help me to keep track of it for the XB1. Also like the Media Player. I'll be hooking up my IPod to it when I get home and my camera. Woot!!

This is a irrefutable statement and concrete proof of Wii U's superiority!!

I wished Bluetooth was an option so I could play anything from my phone on the xbox wirelessly.  You could record stuff with you phone straight to the big screen without having to hook anything up. Put you phone in camera mode and have a live wireless camera feed right in your palm. Bluetooth audio/video /pics and all that stuff could be viewed wirelessly.

Finally OneGuide in Brazil! Now the only thing that i'm missing is the Crunchyroll app. I hope that we have access to it soon.

As a ps fanboy I'm really jealous of the media player and mkv support. It's embarrassing that I can watch my movies on my ps3 but not my ps4. Fix this Sony!

Awesome update, but I'm just curious about the gamerpic save thing to OneDrive, don't really see the use of that.......you save your old gamerpic before changing it I guess, for future reference?

Great; the only thing that's left now is to let music play in background while playing games so I can enjoy my racing games better!

Thank you! ^__^

The only two major features the system still needs is 1) update game without having to instert the game disk into the system . 2) legacy peripheral support for 360 fightpads, fight sticks and racing wheels.

Voice commands for Aussies? Australians don't speak English?

Actually I don't know if that was a question or a statement now :)

@fearthedaemon  The PS4 won't be able to do the same things due to the lack of the hypervisor.  That opens up a whole new world of potential features.  Then of course the more obvious lack of the HTMI input .

@fearthedaemon I agree 100%. I have both. I love both. Xbox One may not be leading in sales but its leading in everything else.  Mine is on whenever I'm home.  I'm still playing DeadRising 3, Titanfall, Forza 5 and now Diablo 3 RoS. My PS4 is and has been doing nothing for a while now..  The coolest feature IMO is how I can plug any head phones into the controller and play in bed while my wife is asleep. Only thing is I need some games to play.......  I could have waited a couple years to get PS4...

@PayneKiller I could reply with many features XBox One has that the PS4 doesn't, but the list would be pretty long.

Owning both systems, all I can say is my Xbox One has been getting alot more playtime than my PS4.

@DariusMKN Unfortunately you have to pay for CrunchyRoll to watch anything on it. They have some short 5-10min episodes of some shows, but not full episodes unless you subscribe and pay $10 a month. Screw that. Just go to GoodAnime and watch all those great Anime shows for free.

@rostamseraj They said they would add DLNA in 2015, XB1 is supposed to get it sometime this september.

@mike468 do you mean play games without having to put disk? or update automatically?

willowrpe

@skiggy34 @fearthedaemon I have both almost never play on Xbox One, the controller hurts my hands and I did not like some of the games I bought like Forza 5, which was a shock as I enjoyed the previous games. I just buy most of my games for PC or PS4 now. But I am looking forward to Sunset Overdrive, I may buy halo not sure yet, will see how many of my friends buy it

flyinb11

I also have both and completely agree.

@blackace @DariusMKN The best free site to watch anime is "KissAnime". You do not have to pay a dime to Crunchyroll to watch anything on it. Actually, you just have to sit through painful ads that ruin the experience of watching the show. You can get the full episode to pretty much every series, however free users have to wait a week, after the show airs to premium users, to watch the episode.

Ooh that's awesome, thanks for the info

I reffering to update automatically. We should be able to go into "my games and apps" qued and be able to download any game updates in there without having to insert the game disk into the system.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@irishrizo Right now the Xbox One can only download an update for a game if the disc is in the drive

_Silent_Jay_
_Silent_Jay_

@blackace No, according to Major Nelson's video, it gets it in an update later this year.

blackace
blackace

@mike468 That won' happen. All the Apps are DD so those are updated automatically.

@Spartan_418 @irishrizo For authentication.

blackace
blackace

@Spartan_418 @irishrizo Yes, that's true, but if you have DD games, they are automatically updated. I do have to stick my Forza 5 disk into the XB1 to complete my update.

irishrizo
irishrizo

@Spartan_418 ohh! i didnt know that i only Have Digital Cept BF4 @_@ i thought you wanted to install games from disc and not use it anymore haha

blackace
blackace

@irishrizo @Spartan_418 With any disc game, you have to have the disk to play. It's the same on the PS4 as well. If you get the game through DD this isn't any disk, so it's automatically updated.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@blackace if you have a physical PS4 game disc, the PS4 can still download updates for that game without needing the disc in the drive
