Sega sells more PC than console games, but pachinko machines eclipse both

Sega's doing much better in the PC and digital market as console game sales crash, but pachinko is still the biggest earner.

Sega's latest earnings report reveals the company's packaged PC sales grew tremendously while packaged console game sales crashed. The company's digital sales are also almost equal to its packaged sales now, but all of these pale in comparison to Sega Sammy Holdings' pachinko business.

The company profited almost $50 million from its pachinko business in the nine months period the report covered. By comparison, Sega's "consumer business," which includes all console, handheld, and PC sales both digital and retail, made only $27 million.

Pachinko, in case you haven't heard of it, is a gambling machine akin to a slot machine thinly veiled as an arcade game. It looks like a vertical pinball table without flippers. You fire a ball into the machine and watch as it makes its way down to the bottom. If the ball goes into certain holes, you get more balls, which you can use to keep playing and ultimately trade in for prizes.

Sega's consumer business seems to be leaning towards digital and PC. It's revenues from packaged games now has only a slight edge on digital revenues, and packaged PC sales grew from 770,000 units last year to 2.27 million, while packaged console sales dropped from 2.73 million to just 1.2 million.

While Sega is probably best known for iconic characters like Sonic, PC games like Football Manager and the Total War series are becoming increasingly important to its bottom line.

SEGA is making good money on PC titles....it's good news. Then it is about high time they should bring Vanquish and Bayonetta in HD to PC. Hope they do bring these titles to PC.

I keep hearing a voice in my head telling me that Sega should release a Steam Box. After reading this, the voice got louder...

I guess that destroys the argument that digital sales on PC are better than physical if they're only now catching up.

It's interesting that they made nearly twice as much money from packaged PC games than they did from packaged console games from all consoles combined. Especially since most PC gamers buy the majority of their games digitally. PC gaming is massive and is growing at a fast pace.

Pc game sales estimated to rise with billions in revenue this year and console sales are hurting only saved by gta. This will continue as consoles dont have different controller support and paywall for online and bc. Console has little to compete with except for a few exclusives that are below pc standard.

I love that many console people act like PC gamers are super rare or that PC gaming is too expensive for all but maybe a few people.  Finally got one of my friends to start playing PC games.  Ever since I started getting into PC games my console gaming fell off until I just stopped playing them.  I'm not a PC elitist but it is nice when people see that PC is much friendlier towards gaming than they would normally think.

Either way, this is great news.  I'm glad that Sega's PC gaming is doing well.  Looks like we'll continue to see more Sega games coming to PC.  And since I've bought several Sega PC games the past few years, it's nice to know they'll keep porting their games over so I can keep playing them. :)

Sega's greatest point has always been in the arcade business. pretty cool that their pc sales are growing tho, maybe that will give them incentive to focus more on providing good pc ports.

"...packaged PC sales grew tremendously while packaged console game sales crashed." Can it be a glimpse of the future? Will Sony adapt after selling their PC line? Will Randy ever get his pants on? Stay tuned...

Not surprising given how lame Sonic's been for the better part of at least a dozen years now(and that trend looks to continue with Sonic Boom).  Shame about some of their other stuff though.

They should release a sequel to Empire Total War. As a British man there is nothing better than controlling the British Red Coats, the greatest fighting force since the Spartan Army and Genghis Khan's Mongolian Army.

Come on Sega, get on it like Sonic.

Fist of the North Star pachinko? That's some bad-ass gambling right there. I wish they'd get back into the pinball business though, Stern's tables have been kind of lacking IMHO.

SEGA didn't really worry about console world as they has ATLUS now and whatever ATLUS create sell like hot cakes.

I would like to see Sega start some new PC-specific IPs.

the biggest revenues comes mostly from the FOOTBALL MANAGER series on PC ( check steam if you dont believe is the 3 , 4th most played game on the platform)

Yeah, I would love to have the Shenmue and Otogi series on PC. I still have the original Xbox games, but I don't have an Xbox anymore. But Panzer is right about it being a From Software property. Sega would have to work something out with them.

I do like the fact that we have been seeing more and more Japanese developers/publishers bring their games to the PC.

@crispx74

OTOGI is a FROM SOFTWARE franchise. SEGA only published the games in the west.

Also, I think this whole PC bussiness is more of a western thing. Most of the SEGA of America/Europe PC and Console stuff don't even release in Japan.

I really wouldn't count on exclusive PC support from the Japanese SEGA division.

@Jedilink109 I did the same and got all my friends into PC gaming years ago. Last system I played was the original Xbox. A friend sold me his 360, but it sat collecting dust until I sold it. I wouldn't mind a console on the side still, probably a PS3/4 for it's exclusives, but PC has been the full house for me. I even play all my old console games I used to play on PC. Although I game on PC, I have no love or toleration for PC elitists.

@crispx74 Yeah I wish we could have JSRF/Shenmue series back and Shenmue would be the one I would want the most. I think the gaming community, all systems, needs a Shenmue series.

@hardeddie

PC gets more games than any other platform, but it's normal for people to want the games they like to be available on their preferred platform. Console gamers make plenty of petitions too. I still remember Sony fanboys crying over the fact they didn't get to play The Witcher 2 and making a petition for it.

@hardeddie I think there are a large amount of people who'd want some PC games to come to consoles, but since this article deals with PC trumping console game sales, we're complaining about what games aren't on PC.

@lieuwa  I dunno about Vanquish, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo has the rights to Bayonetta, which means the only place you'll see that is WiiU

@Maoxx @lieuwa Only Bayonetta 2 bro, SEGA still ows Bayonetta IP. Just like Ninja Gaiden 2 before

prats93

Nope, Sega owns the Bayonetta IP, Nintendo are merely publishing Bayonetta 2. There's no reason why Sega couldn't port it to PC.

@lieuwa @sakaixxTake it easy, you say? That petition has 9008 supporters, meaning IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!! How's that for taking it easy.
