Same-sex romance confirmed for Star Wars: The Old Republic

BioWare producer says same-gender options with some NPCs--but not companions--will be available with upcoming expansion.

by

Same-sex romance is coming to Star Wars: The Old Republic. BioWare executive producer Jeff Hickman penned a "State of the Game" blog entry today, in which he confirmed that the massively multiplayer online role-playing game will add same-gender romance options with the upcoming Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion.

At first, same-sex romance will be limited to "some" NPCs on the new planet Makeb, though more options will be available in the future, Hickman said.

Same-sex romance in Star Wars: The Old Republic has been a long time coming. Hickman apologized that this feature is "taking so long," and said implementing such a system is proving a taller task that originally thought. Hickman explained that same-sex incorporation into The Old Republic was put on the back burner as BioWare focused on implementing the changes necessary to add a free-to-play option.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel add-on increases the massively multiplayer online role-playing game's level cap to 55, adds a new planet called Makeb, and features fully-voiced conversations.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launched just over a year ago behind generally favorable reviews, selling 2 million copies in its first three months. Subscriber figures fell and the game added a free-to-play option last month.

Using sex to generate publicity is so 2000. Or is it 1990? Funny thing is I was seriously thinking about checking out this game the same day this story came out. But now that Bioware has stooped to controversy generation instead of content improving, I will go back to playing for the GW2 team.

Who honestly cares? It's not so amazing that it needs to be announced...

So...does this mean you can go up to level 69? :P

lol bioware, you've truly gone down the runner. finding the desperate need to announce how liberal you are on every gaming site by making sex's genders limitless

i've never cared about the whole same sex debate and hate that it's such a controversial spectacle.

Who cares? it doesn't affect me, anything i do, or the course of the country. It's only the religious right that make it into some big atrocity because it's "against god"

I dont believe that people bother so much about this. I dont believe that people actually get OFFENDED by a simple f***ing OPTION in a game. Seriourly, those conservatives get more and more retarded.

Really? First: why would I want to do this in a Star Wars game or any game? Second: What is the world coming to that this is in a game?

In a perfect world, nobody would care about crap like this.

Yep same sex marriages is going to save the OLD REPUBLIC. Why not take it a step farther and change it to SIMS: OLD REPUBLIC.

I am for same sex marriages, but I just can't help but wonder if these inclusions in mainstream titles aren't for the sole purpose of fulfilling a political agenda...

PodXCOM
PodXCOM

I'm against this 100%. Why? Because I don't want games to be used for a political war!

My favorite sci-fi strategy game, X-COM, was given to a developer who only care for same-sex rights; they didn't care for X-COM or even games. So anyways, they took X-COM, lied about being huge X-COM fans, and changed *everything* to serve their needs, but not that of the fans. They moved it to the USA only and set the timeline to 60 years ago so they can use the civil-rights as a allegory for same-sex rights and marriage.

And the X-COM fans gets nothing out of it! No strategy, no cool sci-fi, No base building, no research, no agents, no nothing! It was going to play like the new Syndicate, but much worse. But fortunately, the developer's game moved to 2014, and Firaxis saved the day with a real X-COM game.

My point is, keep same-sex stuff and political wars *OUT* of video games, or you will be force to play games that will try to control what you think; and all your heroes from Halo, COD, Gears of War, Half-Life will be "coming out of the closet" to fight for same-sex marriage.

They already made some comic book heroes non-straight (like Alan Scott of Green Lantern), don't let them make games into South Park.

You want to make the game better, take the space fighting off of the damn rails.  Piece of crap this isn't star fox.

As long as it's completely optional, for I don't want anything to do with it, then it's inclusion doesn't bother me.

Okay so people are against same-sex relationships but perfectly fine with "INTERSPECIES" relationships?

This story is surprising, as I figured homosexual romance would already be in there.  It is Bioware after all.

The comments, however, are not surprising.  Ridiculous, yet entirely expected...

Comeon people, it is just sex, I spport any form of sex, whether it is with the opposite sex, same sex, dead people, animal, object, or vampires. But not zombies, I am against sex with zombies, because they bites when they.. you know...

Procreation is normal. Same-sex is not.

If it were, the human species would have died out a loooooooooooooooooooong time ago because eventually no new babies would be born to continue the species.

Nature designed creatures to keep perpetuating themselves; that is the normal way of things.

This is not my opinion. This is not an exaggeration. This is scientific fact. If creatures cease procreation (male & female) that species will eventually die out.

No surprise there. If there is one thing Bioware is a pioneer in it's this.

I'm an original subscriber that only played the first 90 days, I liked this game more for it's potential than "actual game."

I remember when I got an email asking me for feedback on how to improve it, all the ideas I've sent were easily implementable by 1 guy in 4 or 5 weeks, but I guess not.

Still hoping it will eventually get good but I doubt this game will ever pull me from GW2.

Sounds good to me. If people can do it in real life, then why not in games? Taste is relative.

@solidus2_1 Nah just goes to show how desparate EA is to make this game work. EA just stay out of MMORPG you cant make it work.

@Kravyn81 Just because a few people have a same-sex relationship doesn't mean the human race is going to go extinct. There will always  be heterosexuals to reproduce, and someday in the future there will probably be ways for homosexuals to reproduce too.

Besides you should give all the children in orphanages and stuck in the foster system a home first, before you bring MORE children in the world...

@Kravyn81

Since when did mankind care about what is natural or normal in the first place? Normal by the way is non-existence, it's merely a societal construct. As for what's natural ... well I seriously doubt computers are found naturally growing in nature so what's naturally occurring or not is non-important to humans as well. So there, all your complaints have been neatly tied up with string and thrown into a river.

Dat-tsu
Dat-tsu

@Kravyn81 The very fact that it does exist proves that there are evolutionary benefits from it. Any property which causes a 100% reproductive failure should have been weeded out of the population long ago if it wasn't balanced by something beneficial. We see it occur in animals all the time, be it for reproductive balance of social cohesion, it has an inherent purpose and is here to stay.

calvinsora
calvinsora

@Kravyn81 It not being natural doesn't mean it's bad. And only about 10% of the population is homosexual at any given time. I'm not seeing how them not procreating is a bad thing; on top of that, we're actually becoming overpopulated, so that would more be a good thing.

gufberg
gufberg

@Kravyn81 Your logic is faulty. "If everybody did it X would happen" This can be applied to literally any concept known to man.

Secondly our species isn't about to die out rather the population is growing - almost - exponentially and thereby threatening the survival of our entire species. Looking at it with the perspective of population statistics you should actually be promoting homosexuality not defaming it.

@calvinsora @Kravyn81 I really want to see where it's considered  unnatural. Homosexuality has been around as long as man has.

The Romans used to screw everyone. Alexander the Great was rumored to be into men. Native Americans had people known as Two-Spirit who they performed duties of both men and women in the tribe, including having sex with their chosen partner. Some of East Asia's earliest recordings have homosexuality in it.

I'll be damned if a caveman didn't try clubbing his male bro over the head and tried to procreate with him.

Point is, we are all different. We all like different things. That doesn't make it unnatural.

Falru
Falru

@ecjones2  @Kravyn81 Most of the time it's because the species in question is too stupid to be able to tell the difference. I really don't care about the debate about homosexuality, but I will put my foot down on this.

We're humans, not animals. There is a difference. Only the die-hard scientists try to pretend that humans are just another primitive form of life on this planet.

Oh, and the genocidal people.

nathangray

@monson21502  @wavelength121 Video games are already federally recognized as forms of free speech, federal laws overrule any other law in any other state. Furthermore, there are actually no enforceable laws against this in the first place.

Maui_Lion
Maui_Lion

 @monson21502

They won't be sued or be forced to remove it.  You honestly think people would -sue- a company over something like this?  Just because some people have a problem with homosexuality doesn't mean they're all going to suddenly rise up and sue.  It'll be thrown out of court almost immediately.  No crime is being done and nobody is being hurt by the decision.

And being homosexual isn't a crime; well, in some crap countries it's labeled as one, but it shouldn't be.  So the weed analogy doesn't quite work here.

calvinsora
calvinsora

@StaticPenguin @calvinsora @Kravyn81 I definitely agree with that, but also because diversity is the very cornerstone of nature, there being differences between people in the most varied of things is something that's not only natural, but essential. Especially considering it's for that reason that we can be so diverse yet still be within a single species.

Jake518
Jake518

@Falru @ecjones2 @Kravyn81 Actually, humans are animals. We belong to the animalia kingdom. We don't look like fungi or plants now do we? And nowhere have I seen scientists say we're a primitive life-form on this planet.

Blue-N-Yellow

@Falru  @ecjones2  @Kravyn81 "We're humans, not animals. There is a difference. Only the die-hard scientists try to pretend that humans are just another primitive form of life on this planet."

Only difference between humans and other animals is that humans are self-aware; everything else is identical. Made of the same biological material, biochemical reactions are the same, mostly the same organs, all obey the laws of physics, etc etc.

Unless you would suggest that we are aliens from outer space, then yes, humans are animals.
