Resistance 3 golden, day-one patch inbound

Development on Insomniac's shooter finished ahead of September 6 release date; launch day "updates and tweaks" fix slated.

by

Gamers are one step closer to coming face-to-face with new Chimera. Insomniac Games today confirmed that Resistance 3 has gone gold for its September 6 release date.

Resistance 3 is locked and loaded for its arrival on September 6.

Though development of the game is finished, Insomniac has more work to do. The studio said it is planning a day-one patch for Resistance 3 that will bring unnamed "updates and tweaks" to the game.

Additionally, gamers won't need to wait that long to play the game, as the beta for Resistance 3 starts today on the PlayStation Network for owners of SOCOM 4.

The pool of beta players will be opened wider later in the month, as European PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given access starting August 10, and US Plus members will be able to join in starting August 23.

Lastly, Insomniac is packing the Resistance 3 disc with additional Sony content. These wares include playable demos for Killzone 3, Infamous 2, and Motorstorm Apocalypse, as well as trailers and developer videos for Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Starhawk, God of War: Origins Collection, and SOCOM 4. Finally, the Resistance 3 disc will host movie trailers and music from Sony artists like the Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and Incubus.

Seeing as we already have a healthy amount of high profile games from now until the end of the year, i would have preferred if Insomniac just delayed the game until next year, then they could fix the game without having to do the day-one patch thing, as well as have a better chance of selling their game.

Too bad they didn't spend more time developing, thus possibly eliminating the need for a day one patch. Instead they jam the disc full of movie trailers, music, demos and developer videos, which I personally, could care less about. If anything, pack it full of actual, you know, GAME content. Regardless, I've had this on pre-order since January and I'm still very much looking forward to it....

Yeah i understand some peoples anger with day one patches, but it's better than them waiting 1-3 months to patch it :) I do however miss the days of "get home. put game into console. play" not "get home. put game into console. wait for (possible)mandatory install. wait for mandatory(if playing online)patch to install(while 1 million are also trying to download). then play".. at least if there is not mandatory install, it wont be too long.

Wow, you really see the need for this massive storage medium. To fill with ad's and demos. When Blu-ray came out, people touted is usage for "amazing games", "extended gameplay" and "REDICULOUS textures and sound" now we see how little all this extra space is needed. 20-30gb would have been more that fine, and then they couldve cut down on read speeds. But i guess "the biggest is the best" is the current favourite mantra. I wish xbox would have gone a different way than dvd(although i have only had a couple games spread across multiple discs), but we obviously weren't in need of this large of storage. PC's don't seem to use the bluray format for many games, and i have yet to meet someone with a bluray drive in their comp(i know people do have them, i just dont know any :))

With the launch of the MP beta I wasn't that hyped. However, now I'm pumped for the release of this bad boy. It really is a great series that only continues to get better with time like a good wine. :)

@crossdudu Well isn't it good that the disc has more stuff in it? They made the game and saw that there is still plenty of space on blu-ray so they added whole bunch of stuff in. And they get good money for it too I guess... Advertising :)

@steelmouth Don't know what to do with all the Blu-Ray space?? What the hell are you smoking young Sir.. It's called promotion, and to be honest it's just made the game seem even more appealing! I've played the demo and it was awesome, and now I know it comes with all the added extras it's never seemed such a good payment of money - any news on Starhawk is good news. As for holding it back until it's done then yeah I kind of agree, but games always get updates on release. COD had it, GTA had, in fact I think even Dynasty Warriors had it when I bought that. There's little point releasing it in an already jam-packed end of year, and to be honest the earlier the better! It's a clever move I reckon, a very clever move indeed.

if you dont have internet connection then how are you on gamespot? if you dont have internet then you probably wont hear about the patch and wont worry about it in the first place

why not just hold back on the game for few more days? This just diminishes the out of box quality that most game reviews are rated.

@steelmouth When a game goes gold it means they can no longer modify the contents of the discs.

Demos and trailers on a game? As long as I don't have to watch 10 trailers before I reach my menu like on some movie dvds nowadays...

Is it wrong that i was surprised that this "day one patch" wasn't veiled as a DLC? ...i mean.. with the way some developers treat gamers these days, can you blame me?

Tsuchikage

The day one patch will just be for stuff that Insomniac has noticed during the multiplayer beta. Don't freak out, people. I'm sure DICE will do likewise for Battlefield 3.

Wow. A lot of people here seem to be ignorant as to how the distribution process works. Here's a new idea: A game has to be ready to go well before it releases. So, while the game itself is in a state in which it can be released, there are still tweaks that need to be done. So, to benefit us gamers, they decided to take what they got and put it on the disc, and continue work on the rest for the purpose of releasing it as a day one patch. Devs CANNOT be working on a retail game until the day it releases. Games have to be ready to go well before that. However, with this solution, Insomniac has avoided delaying the game. You all ought to be praising them for releasing that content as a patch rather than giving us a half-assed game right out of the box or delaying it to add that same content.

I still love the Resistance games. Played the hell out of both of them. Number three's got a lot to live up to for me.

@mysticstry 10 gigs for the average game? I don't know about that... Besides, some of the current-gen games are starting to push the space limit. Why shouldn't Resistance push the space limit also? It appears to have a healthy number of HQ cutscenes and it has updated graphics. If the length is the same as Fom or R2, I would expect the game to take up at least 35-40 gigs.

WOW, patch on the first day? This is not a good sign for this game. I'll wait 6 months for it to be finally ready

If they knew the game needed extra work why not just keep it in development, I mean they would have kept their deadline....... This just sounds stupid to me.....

why are people JUST NOW complaining about a day one patch? COD:BO had one, Gran Turismo 5 had one, almost every big game seems to have one. Besides, its for the ONLINE component. doesn't any pay attention to the single player in games anymore? And as for the extra content, again, why is this JUST NOW an issue? EA has had extra stuff on their discs (atleast on the PS3), along with Sony. As redemption79 said, Blu-ray has a lot more space on it (25 to100 gb). To fill up that amount of space, the game would have to be ridiculously long, ridiculously detailed, etc. Stop complaining people, neither of these concepts are new.

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

Maybe I'm just confused on different interpretations of the English language........ But if a game is already gold, needs a day one patch, but doesn't come out until September, is it really "gold"/done? This isn't a dig towards Sony, but to all developers/publishers in general: DON'T ANNOUNCE THAT A GAME IS GOLD AND A DAY ONE PATCH AT THE SAME TIME!!!!

redemption79
redemption79

blu ray discs are 3 times bigger than normal discs, so sony are basically showing xbox users what they'll never get with their games, la noire was on two discs I believe for xbox and rage is going to be 3 discs (rage interview at E3), ps will still only be one, so no need to worry about it being a short campaign, I hope.....

mysticstryk
mysticstryk

@battlefrontphil Blu-Ray discs have about 50 gigs of space on them. Of course there is a ton of extra space. Most games won't use more than 10 gigs. Heck even WoW uses up only ~24gb. @crossdudu Sony just wants to advertise some of their properties. I doubt it has anything to do with the quality of the game.

battlefrontphil
battlefrontphil

Am I the only one who's bothered by the fact that there is *room* for all that extra junk? Doesn't Resistance 3 take up any space!? :( I'm starting to worry that the single-player campaign will be really short.

Warring with aliens is getting pretty old. Anyone else tired of this? But, I guess it's to be expected when you've been playing video games for 25 years. EVERYTHING seems old.

crossdudu
crossdudu

I just don't see the reason they must put all those extras in the disc. I know they try to make it a selling point or something like that, but it just seems to me that they feel the game itself isn't worth the price they are charging, so they just add those extra stuff.

@AvnKnight actually the patch is there because of tester found a problem with it and it was to late to fix it before it went golden so they just release a patch for it and come one you are complaining about something that would only take a couple of mins to do before start playing the game

jack00

The singleplayer campaign is 100% complete. The day one patch is from the twicks they will have made from the beta for the multiplayer part of the game. There is nothing to get upset about weither you're planning to play offline or online. If you're playing offline, the patch is of no concern to you, if you're playing online, you will spend 5 minutes downloading a patch before you can go play online. Anyone complaining is a spoiled little brat. If we can get the game sooner instead of pushing the release another 2-3 months I really don't see why anyone should be upset.

AvnKnight
AvnKnight

Day one patch really? so instead of getting everything up and ready they wasted time adding a ton of extra content that has absolutely nothing to do with the game Im just not understanding wth we need months old stuff you can already get off the psn.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@Vishant Technically they will have met the deadline, hence why this is a "day one" patch. Surely a Day one patch is better then a game without patches at all, all games have issues.

tom_cat_01
tom_cat_01

What if you're not online? Day 1 (or any day) patches are now use then? Why is it golden if they *know* there are problems??

Vishant
Vishant

They knew the release dates for months, these companies need to learn how to meet deadlines and we as consumers need to punish companies with day one patches with walking away from their products

Good to see the game getting a lot of support. @sbdoherty What's not to like. The multiplayer is much better balanced, has more direction (less chaotic), hit detection is better, graphics are better, it's more tactical, servers are good, weapon wheel is back...etc.. I really don't get what the people complaining about don't like. Fall Of Man was good online, Resistance 2 lacked something, it was good but not the best. On a side note what would be the point of releasing what would essentially be the same game as Resistance 2? I like the way that Insomniac keep the core elements but change everything that needs to be changed. @sflowers539 You shouldn't worry, the 30v30 matches on Resistance 2 didn't really work, it was run around in a group, find the other group, kill what you could before dying and repeat. I always felt Resistance 2 was at its best in the 5v5 matches where it involved more skill. The 8v8 matches work well, it definitely feels like a Resistance title but it's got far more polish now. The best bit about Resistance 3 BETA is that it's balanced unlike the previous game, notably Resistance 2 where the Wraith was way too powerful. The game also features the best bits from Fall Of Man and Resistance 2 without cutting corners, it works well. It's a huge step up from Fall Of Man and Resistance 2 and certainly my favourite based on the demo and beta.

Im nervous about this game as the more ive played to beta, the more i get disappointed by the game... hopefully the campaign saves the game
