Resident Evil's Next Movie May Be Its Last; Tentatively Titled The Final Chapter

Paul W.S. Anderson is currently working on the script with the intention of it being the series' final film.

Resident Evil: Retribution

Writing has begun on the sixth entry in the Resident Evil film series, but as its tentative title--Resident Evil: The Final Chapter--suggests, it might turn out to be the last, according to writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson.

Speaking with Collider, Anderson revealed that The Final Chapter is the title he's currently using as he writes the upcoming film's script. The title has not yet been finalized but could end up being used, as he said, "It may be the final title, but that's what's written on the front page of my script." Asked whether he's writing this with the intention of making it the series' final film, he said, "That's what's on the title page, it's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely."

Of course, as with video games, the movie industry is hesitant to let a franchise die when it's still making money. And the Resident Evil movies, whatever the consensus might be on their quality or merit, have made money: The most recent film, 2012's Retribution, grossed $240 million worldwide, the bulk of which was made overseas. Its predecessor, Afterlife, grossed nearly $300 million, but even with the decline, Retribution was still a moneymaker.

Anderson seems to be aware that continued success could derail plans for this movie to end the series. Referencing the Highlander movies, he said with a laugh, "As Christopher Lambert famously said, 'There can be only one.' And then there were five of them."

Although 3D may not be as popular as it once was, Anderson indicated earlier this year that the next Resident Evil movie would be available in 3D. In the interview with Collider, he talked about how it's important to begin considering 3D even in the writing stages. "You cannot make a great 3D movie by just--it's not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on," he said. "You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top--it doesn't work well like that."

"I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know--because I've done so much of it--will translate very well into 3D," he said. "Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It's really, even from this point, 3D is something I'm definitely thinking about. And I think it's one of the things that people really appreciate about the movies that I'm involved with. Even if you don't like any other aspect of them, I think the one thing that most people do agree on is the 3D looks fantastic and that's really good news."

Anderson went on to say that he has been approached to work on movies based on other video game series, but he's been hesitant to do so. "I have been offered other video games themselves," he said. "I think because I'm probably so associated with Resident Evil, I think there's probably a reluctance to make another video game movie and I will also kind of feel that reluctance as well. That's the video game franchise I'm associated with right now and that's really what I want to do and put all of my energy into.

"And I'm very happy with the way I've managed to alternate between doing video game-based movie and then a historical-based movie or a piece of literature. I wouldn't want to do video game movie after video game movie."

As for the Resident Evil video games themselves, Resident Evil 7 is reportedly in the works, although Capcom has yet to make any official announcements.

It seems like my fellow game fans are always half morons and half not. Like I tell everyone who hates the new RE games because they are too action packed, it is not going to be a scary game after the 2+ installment. I use dead space as an example of this. In the first game you and the character are terrified because you don't know what is going on. In the second you have some experience and can survive for the most part with ease, not being scared too much anymore. And by the third you are a zombie alien killing bad ass who has killed countless numbers of them and no longer get scared of them anymore.

Now in regards to the movies. The same rule that applies to super hero movies applies here. Like in hero movies they are made for people who do NOT read the comics. So the RE movies are not made for those who play the games. They are made for the ones who don't play the games.

If you go to a movie expecting it to be like the game or the comic or the book, then you will be disappointed because you are not the type of person they are making that movie for.

They already have you with the comic/book/game. They want the people they don't have already, which are the ones who don't play the games, or don't read the comics or books. So again, as a game fan, these movies are not made for you in any way.

thank GOD this horrible abomination of a coherent series of films, this colossal crap in the faces of all fans of the games, this utterly and inexcusably aweful TRASH is FINALLY coming to an end, there isn't enough electroshock therapy in the world to zap me back into coherence after suffering through 5 of these

Please end it. The first 3 were a guilty pleasure for me, but then it outstayed its welcome. The last two were pretty awful.

Wow, every time I try to post a comment, it's always marked as pending. Never use swear words or anything of that nature but, it has to be approved by a moderator every time. What is this preschool?

The first movie was pretty good. I've watched it many times. The second and third were OK. After that, each installment gets worse and worse. The last movie was terrible. It has to have the record for the most bullets shot in a movie with nobody getting hit. I mean seriously, an entire platoon of zombie military guys with mounted machine guns and every other type of automatic weapon open up on her spraying tens of thousands of bullets per second. Not a single one even grazes anybody. Then they return fire and shoot every zombie army guy dead without wasting a bullet. Terrible.

And all this first she has super powers, then she has psionic powers, then she gets stuck with a needle and has no powers. They couldn't hit her with a bazooka or a chain gun but, a guy can walk up to her and stick her with a needle and say poof your powers are gone. Ugh!

Each movie was just as chessy and lame as the last, but I still go watch them... Can't wait until "RE:the final chapter".  Biggest RE (game series) fan ever !

Are these movies actually worth watching?

I haven't seen an R.E movie since 2002. I believe that is a wise choice.

I did enjoy those 5 movies, the last one more than the one before it, but it should relly find its end and IMO there should be a last RE game which wraps up everything and finally finishes the entire IP, RE just got boring

It's funny that they're doing a 6th Resident Evil movie, while the game series is also on its 6th title. I've enjoyed all RE movies, so I don't mind them doing another one. I won't pay to see it in cinema, especially not with the ticket prices in Sweden (110-115 SEK or 16-17 USD), but they work very good as brainless TV entertainment.

Please do finish off this worthless film adaptation of the series already! Nothing worse than nonexistent character playing as the lead role. Give someone else the chance to make a credible film, instead of screwing die hard fans! Yeah the series had its ups and mostly downs, but come one! Thanks for ripping off the fans!

I liked the first 3 movies, the rest were meh imo. So I don't mind if this is the last :P

The fight scene between Jill and Alice in the latest one (i forgot its name) was cool though.

capcom should have let George A Romero to make the first RE movie. his script is much better all of Paul anderson's movies combined.

just google search George Romero's RE script and you find out what am i talking about. capcom didn't let him to make the first RE movie because capcom wanted a War movie rather than a zombie movie.

first RE games story are more like George Romero's zombie movies.

Stebsis

And because it's supposed to be the final movie in a big name franchise, of course people will go watch it, it does great in box office and they'll continue making more RE movies either by rebooting or continuing this s**t. It will never stop.

That would be about time. Those movies suck badly. Well, the ones with actors. I liked the CGI ones.

Resident evil 1 was awesome. It had alot in common with the games and it felt ok.
Resident evil 2 was still kinda cool. I didnt understand why they felt the need to butcher the games plot tho.
From resident evill 3 and onward everething got worse and worse.

Orga777

Thanatos2k

Oh god, what will we do when they stop making garbage RE movies!?

Gazdakka

@eridian00 My biggest issue with the films is that they shoved Milla Jovovich in there and hybridised all the characters from Resident Evil into her, creating a character that doesn't actually exist in the plot and is pretty much just Paul W. S. Anderson's way of earning brownie points with his wife. She could have been Claire and it would have been fine but *nope*, let's make a fake character, steal all the main qualities of all the Resident Evil cast and shove them into her, then re-introduce those characters and play it up so that his wife is more badass than any of them.

It's tripe that needs to be rebooted. There was nothing about the plot that couldn't have been accomplished with the characters they already had. Injecting a Mary-Sue into the mix is painful and detracts from the value of the other cast.

@bdrtfm Haha the last movie.....An hour and 28 minutes of poorly written story and lackluster action...Last 2 minutes Bam! Good Guys and bad guys teaming up, She gets powers back, Monsters attacking in force from every direction, humanity turns the white house into a fortress and prepares for its last stand. Oh man this is going to be awesome! Roll credits..........

Nightelf123

@themc_7 none of them is worth watching you should instead read George A Romero's Resident Evil Script(the script of the first film which got cancelled.)

@themc_7 The first two were. The third was ok, but only if you liked the first two. It's not as good. 4 and 5 were pretty bad.

@namitokiwa they're not bad movies imo, but Alice, they make her too strong and all other characters are push overs lol

WolfgarTheQuiet

@gornes79 First one was ok. Best RE movies are the two CGI that do not include Alice since she is not part of the universe and to me never will be :)

@Thanatos2k Then it's time for Uwe Boll to make a grand return with another one of his video game "movies", hehe.

@freedom01  Yes, that filter is very unforgiving. It does not understand contextual use of a word. So a word may be harmless but, get flagged anyway. Nothings perfect I guess.

meedokicky

@Nightelf123 @slainta Leon was too stiff in the first one XD Haven't watched the second one though, can't even remember the titles what is with me today? :S

bdrtfm
bdrtfm

@gamefreak215jd @bdrtfm @freedom01  There are a lot of words that you are not supposed to say apparently. That's the problem. Many words that are not considered profane get flagged because if used in a certain way, they could be derogatory. Unfortunately it ends up flagging a lot of posts unnecessarily. I've used words many times that were completely harmless but, had to be removed before it would post.

I mean, what's so bad about saying a movie or game was cr*ppy? If someone is offended by that or words like b*tt, maybe they should stay out of comment sections. I get that they are trying to clean up the comments section but, it's a bit harsh sometimes.
