Sony has announced that beginning tomorrow, May 20, select PlayStation 4 owners in the United States will have a chance to try out the company's upcoming streaming service, PlayStation Now.
The program has been in a private beta on PlayStation 3 since January, and the PS4 beta will also be private. If you registered for the PlayStation Now beta, be sure to check your email inbox for a voucher code to try out the beta.
PlayStation Now was announced in January during the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show. It launches this summer in the US, though availability details for Europe have not been announced. That's not the only unanswered question about PlayStation Now, as we're still waiting for Sony to tell us how much it will charge for individual game rentals and for the Netflix-style subscription package, as well as which games will be available to play.
The PlayStation Now service--which runs on technology powered by the Sony-owned Gaikai--will launch this year for PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita, as well as compatible Bravia TVs. Support for "more devices" will be available later on.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation strategic planning director Peter Jamshidi said the ongoing PlayStation Now beta program has been "going great so far." So far, beta testers have tallied more than 50,000 gameplay hours--that's the equivalent of over 2000 days.
Lastly, Sony said that in the near future it will expand the current PlayStation Now private beta on PS3 "to a broader audience." You can register at the PlayStation Now website for access to the PS3 and PS4 private betas, but of course there's no guarantee that you'll get in.
